Hello Tony and Chelsea! Just a little note. Lenses are for me like 50% when i decide what vody i should buy. Im sure not only for me. Apologoize for bad english 🙂 Have fun’
I chose a7r3 for work because I’m a hybrid shooter. Great experience with it so far, and your “user manual” video put me on the right track form the beginning. Thank you for that. However, I’m still debating on switching to back button focus. Regardless, I keep learning something new form you guys all the time.
Good comparison. Thanks. At least there are only two cameras to choose from now instead of a half dozen or more. But I think I’m too spoiled on electronic viewfinders to want to go back to an optical one.
I feel that A7RIII vs D850 is more about mirrorless vs DSLR. A lot of the postive that A7RIII is just mirrorless improvements like silent shooting, electronic viewfinder and usb charging. A lot of the other stuff are pretty close.
For the IBIS, make sure that when you’re adapting a lens, that you set the lens MM in the IBIS. If I set it to 200mm in the Sony and shoot with a 50mm, you’re gonna get shaken shots.
I like the Sony A7R III.
I use a 5D Mark IV, mainly because because it is the most suitable for what I do, enough resolution, enough low light performance, good enough autofocus, very easy to use, more rugged than Sony cameras but still lighter than Nikon cameras, as a sailor the in body GPS is essential as I would never bother logging the latitude and longitude of that blank spot in the ocean where I get some picture, it has NFC, good wifi, mounts EF lenses natively and it has timelapse, I don’t shoot 4k because 1080p is enough for doing what I do, the battery charger isn’t an issue to bring since I’m well organised. If for a given idea I would have the task of realizing the best achievable picture at a limited price I would have picked a Nikon or a Sony but that’s not the case at all, but I guess I would have picked the D850 if it wasn’t a Canon
I would say your previous experience is probably the biggest factor. Also, your current ecosystem. If you have a D810, the D850 is the obvious jump. But if you are coming from the D750, Canon 5D III or APSC, the jump to Sony is going to be a lot more rewarding because it will introduce sooo many new things, not just better quality
To me, the Nikon seems to be better built, more solid, durable. What are your thoughts?
Nikon wins for me because I already own a bunch of lenses.
I just Love Nikon D850
I have it
Something nobody talks about with Sony’s WiFi (which maybe is also possible with Nikon, but I’ve never used it so can’t speak to it) — you can copy JPG+RAW files over an FTP server. That coupled with a trigger on the FTP server lets you automate a whole lot of cloud backup options while on the road. And I’ve gotta say, speed is not so bad even with uncompressed RAW — you wouldn’t want to do this after a whole day of shooting, but with just a couple dozen photos, it’ll upload with the Sony while plugged in in maybe 10-15 minutes. See e.g. this workflow I often use: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1zonv4_r4LxF0vDY6jf9uKnzTHW0Q86Tx-ick8Pon0QU/edit?usp=sharing
Size and weight are the two main reasons I prefer Sony. Sony has enough quality lenses for me, so that isn’t an issue.
I wish you could talk more about the image quality, or to more precise, the color science and overall look of the images. Are they similar? Skin tones are ok in both? Has Sony its particular tint in portraits vs the pleasant canon look? Thanks in advance
HAHAHA! “WHOA… WE’RE STILL GOING!”
A7r3 > D850 switched from Nikon. Live view seeing what the exposure will be before you shoot, eye auto and in camera stabilization . I can just focus more on composure then having to actually worry about focusing 😂
Anyone else like Canon more?
Thx for the honest omparison!!! You really help us make decisions. — What ur missing? Menu System. 👍🏽 D850 | 👎🏽 Sonys. Log Profile 👍🏽 Sony | 👎🏽 Nikon. Rolling Shutter 👎🏽 D850 | 👎🏽 Sonys. Sounds like the takeaway is both are AMAZING!!! I was about to buy one or the other.. UNTIL the Nikon Mirrorless announcement… will wait till 8/23 to see what’s up.
Ruggedness and water resistance is a major consideration for me.
So basically you can’t go wrong if you buy either of these cameras.
