Unfortunately, the big deal breaker is refresh rate. If I am buying this type of thing and at such a price, I want no compromises in areas like Hz that matters so much to me
With that said, this is the most exciting thing PCVR related I’ve heard of since the Deckard, and this has the benefit of being REAL
Hell, yes.
Under promise and over deliver, what strange reality is this from…. definitely refreshing to hear it
Sounds cool but 1K no.
great tho this will slim down the future headsets!. Looks really cool and futuristic! I would buy it if inside out tracked tho cause I like to be able to play anywhere as long as I have a portable pc
Ok…. linux support?
So happy that a company is still pushing for PCVR! I still have a Rift S from years ago, but can’t justify $1k for the Index as it’s so old, but also don’t feel like going for a more slight upgrade. This seems like enough of an upgrade to get me excited! Hope it turns out great. Also hope they make a bundle with trackers and controllers as well eventually.
this with a 110+ fov and im sold. Would really love it to be wireless also. Im hooked on wireless.
This does look amazing indeed. Though as a HP Reverb G2 user this would be quite the expensive upgrade.
Especially in the Netherlands where it costs €1369(nice). add in 2 basestations adding 320 to that and controllers of either €150 for the Vive controller or €300 for the Index Controllers.
That would be an €1839 upgrade for the cheapest solution or €1989 for my ideal solution.
If they made a version with Inside-out tracking, if that is at all possible in a simillar form factor. I don’t know what goes into making an HMD like this.
But Given how thin phones are, with the processor it has and the amount of camera’s they can slap on, I think it’s theoretically possible.
The thing with Simracing is that you don’t need the level of tracking base stations give you. the Reverb G2 does wonders, although lately i’ve been mostly using it for ETS2… Rarely used it for Sim Racing given the only one I have currently is Assetto Corsa using Content Manager. But from what i can tell Inside-out tracking is more than good enough in these instances. So.. if it is at all possible a version with this would be nice.
Also, Really, they necessitate you to use an iPhone to scan your face? Sure using the Lidar sensor is a lot easier but come on, you can use a regular camera to do nearly the exact same thing. This completely bars me to buy one. I don’t know anyone who has this and using a phone in the store to do this is a little.. weird. I wouldn’t be surprised if you get asked to leave the store if you try to do this to be honest. But using software on the computer and a measurement reference you can do this. So how are they doing this for people that do not have access to an iphone? Do they sent a generic gasket? If so, doesn’t this defeat the entire purpose of the device? Given the price they ask I do expect them to find a way on how to do this without necessitating the use of the lidar sensor in the iPhone.
I also wonder what would happen if they made a more generic headset, Maybe one that isn’t specifically catered to you. Offering IPD adjustment on the fly, maybe even including a lidar sensor in the headset with little no aditional weight and they can let the PC its connected to do the calculations when its in use. Motorized lenses wouldn’t add that much weight. tho if its a more generic HMD it doesn meatter if its even twice the weight it currenty is, and maybe add inside-out tracking to this one. maybe match the resolution of the Reverb G2 to this one at 2160×2160 per eye.
Maybe make this a little bit cheaper than the bespoke one. which should be doable as the production for this one can be much more streamlined and standardized.
This would give people a taste of the better option one where everything is exactly as it should be. always ready to use, no fiddling no fuss. This could make people want to upgrade to the more expensive one and sell or perhaps… trade-in their more generic one.
Ofcourse these are mostly just ideas and hurdles I see in front of me as a very casual VR user that does want something less bulky to use than the Reverb G2 and a bit lighter. The G2 has a very odd pressure point on my nose.
This was my Ted talk, thanks for reading!
I love Phia being in the background swinging her arms probably thinking “JUST TAKE IT OFF SO I CAN TRY IT ALREADYYYYY”
If I had a bunch more money, I would be excited, yes. This looks like they stuck to the basics, and MASTERED them. And like you were hinting, I think this will make a great platform upon which to build a more advanced set-up.
Regarding face tracking modules, I think you’d be better off sourcing a custom face mask or face shield to anchor the modules to. There doesn’t seem to be much on the headset to attach things too. The face mask thing could also serve to mount other things like alternate tracking solutions for those without light houses. I think an external, inward facing camera based tracker would be a good alternative. Just place lightweight optical targets on the mask for the camera(s) to track.
If I’m looking for an upgrade from my Quest 1, should I go for this, vive xr elite or something completely different?
I don’t know, I have extremely mixed feelings about it. On one hand it is interesting to see what they have come up with, and on the surface it seems great. But the economy of scale is going to be their enemy here. Trying to customize things for each person means slower production and more chances for issues. I get that the 3d scan is mainly for the foam interface, so maybe it will not be that bad. But custom IPD and lenses for each headset is going to be expensive (both money and time).
But beyond that, I think my biggest concern is the price. At $1000 you basically get two screens and a vive tracker glued together. I get there is probably more to it than that, but when you compare it to any other headset recently announced and their features, it just seems expensive to me. Then add in another grand if you do not already have lighthouse trackers and controllers. I am just struggling to see the value of this product.
The other big concern is that the only way to even order one is if you have an apple phone. The site does say that you can go to an apple store and use a phone there, but I get the sinking feeling that they do not have a partnership with apple, and are just suggesting that you barge in to use apple’s phones to order their product. That does not sit well with me, they really need to come up with a solution that is professional.
I will be interested to see the final reviews, and see how the product holds up over time. I just can’t see getting one, even through it is in my price range, just because I do not see the value. I hope I am wrong and it turns out to be an amazing product.
We just need a wireless inside out tracked one now ;-;
If they would add hand tracking and non-steamVR software for working in VR I would be the first one to buy this, looks very comfortable
If nothing else, it’s nice to see that PCVR is alive and well. Maybe I’ll buy version 2, or whatever subsequent headset is inspired by it.
13:36 I swear to God I heard thank you to my Patreon supporters and especially my niggers and I had 13 brain aneurysms I literally rewind it
Honestly the thing with the face gasket needing to be custom fit to your face feels more like a drawback to me.
It means that each headset they make may only be comfortable for a single person.
Personally when I have people over at my place, sometimes I would adjust my Index for them so they could try out VR if they fancy.
If I had a headset that made this materially impossible well… can’t call that a selling point.
EDIT: Oh, and this would also be a problem in the long run should you want to resell your HMD.
Love the vids, I’m patient on ur next video project
I dont see any benefit of this being small, if it has to be tethered to a PC.
Only 90 degrees of fov?
