It is an issue, for the following reasons;
1) No cost savings passed on. It’s priced premium but missing premium feature. Omitting the flip screen must have saved them a tonne, but we certainly didn’t get that cost saving! A more reasonable price would absolutely help dampen the omission of the flippy.
2) You examples were casual. I shoot event work and have needed a tilt screen countless times to get the shot QUICKLY or even inconspicuously (such as making it look like you’re reviewing a shot by having the camera close to body at waist height but actually documenting). Bunging a camera up with arms straight and tilting screen down so you can get above the crowds and compose quickly can become a really paramount feature. K-1, KP and XT4 I can take such shots like this, K3III… not so much 🙁
In essence it can stifle creativity and the solutions (use phone etc) lack timing or capturing the right moments.
3) Lack of ventilation and heat dissipation! I knew the K3III would have some heating problems, it’s the only camera I have heard overheating in Stills mode! lol.
4) Your demonstration was 5mins in the garden (and you took awhile to get the shots, partly DFA100 hunting issues lol), but try on something like real estate, taking shots all day long of homes where you need to be crammed up against a corner of the room and you can’t flip the screen out! You might have to compromise on your composition because you either have to use a less preferred lens for the job, or get behind the camera to see what’s going on, and then factor in doing this up and down squatting in every room corner, on every home throughout the day, now do it all week. You’ll get over that shit quickly.
5) Video. EVERYBODY WANTING TO DO SERIOUS VIDEO NEEDS FLIP SCREENS. And no I’m not talking about just being able to flip the screen around to see yourself but I’m talking about handheld techniques for moving and shooting with IBIS that lesson jerkiness etc, it’s never something we do from using OVF/EVF.
So the camera is already niche and it became even nicher to those still with Pentax. It just doesn’t feel ‘flagship’ when missing such a crucial feature. Truly those that don’t miss it or need it don’t fall into any of those categories (AND THAT IS TOTALLY FINE), but people need to also accept that how they use a camera and others differs enormously, Pentax shot themselves in the foot with not doing a flip screen, but hey… they’re seasoned pros now at self harm so… xD
The great thing about flip screens is you don’t have to flip it.
Leica q2 is 6k without a flip screen
Hi Kobie,
For once (!), I tend to disagree (a bit). Yes, the viewing angles of the screen on Katie may be good, they do not replace a tilting screen when it comes to composition, in my opinion. I agree that it may not be a total deal breaker (otherwise I wouldn’t have bought mine over the weekend), but it is a pretty important “nice-to-have” and really would’ve completed the package. At least for me. I can do without, but would really have loved it if Pentax had added it. It didn’t have to be as versatile as the K-1, but a simple tilting screen would have been a super addition to an overall great camera. Let’s say the camera deserves one. 🙂
Would snap-in focus help in this situation? FWIW, I have injured knees and I can’t comfortably crouch, so I wouldn’t attempt these shots even with a tilt screen. So for me, it’s not an issue. I really like the K3iii viewfinder and I think it would be hard to retain the comfortable viewfinder with a tilt screen.
The designers said that they chose not to have a tilt screen in order to concentrate on the viewfinder experience. I am sure that they did this to concentrate on the design as a DSLR rather than a camera to be used in live view.
I have something way better than a tilting screen for my Pentax DSLR ! More than 10 years ago, I Bought a Seagull brand angle finder which attaches in 2 seconds on the viewfinder. It can be rotated 45 degrees left or right for vertical framing and you can choose x1 or x2 magnification. I add that the view is as sharp for manual focusing than it is without. It is really a little wonder for less than $60 on Amazon !
Be nice to have a K1 screen for the money, but I’d take screen size over tilt capability every time. Whenever I take low shots with my K5ii, I think it’d be useful to have Image Sync, so at least you’ve always got that to fall back on. Now, where can I find a Seagull right-angle viewer… lol
Yes, it is a huge issue, especially as you get older and find it harder to bend down. It is the single most important reason that I sold mine and I will never buy another expensive camera that doesn’t have a tilt screen. The K-1’s screen implementation is fantastic and I really don’t understand why a screen like this was omitted on the K-3iii
I had EVF/flippy camera before Pentax and I used flippy almost all the time. When I switched to K-r I missed flippy and EVF a lot, but loved OVF for other reasons. But that was 15 years ago and screens today have much better angle of view. I started to praise DSLR over mirrorless and today I miss flippy for like 5% of shots or less. And I would have more expensive and thicker camera for other 95% of shots. My main camera now is K5ii and K3ii.
All that said, K3iii is still disappointment with fix screen, because it was removed for final release. I bet it was planned all the time but removed for production. What is their reason, only they know, but their “excuse” for camera being like 1 mm slimmer is really just last minute excuse.
For $2000 camera people was rightfully upset. They should include MP3/MP4 player inside for the price, not remove features that are expected. It is like Nikon with their 1st Z put single card slot. I know, I never ever used 2nd slot for anything more than placeholder for 2nd slot (insted of having it in the bag), but people expecting it and are prepared to pay for it. Industry marketed 2nd slot and flippy as measure for professional camera, now they can’t just remove it.
Look the GIANT bezel on LCD screen?! Pentax K20D have smaller bezel, that is so flippy design but fixed at last stage. K5 have no gap at all, the outer glass size is same as image under neath. K3 only have tiny bezel (LCD smaller than outer glass). But all cameras that have flippy have large bezels and it is one edge that is double the size. I would feel cheated too with K3iii and to the edge large glass and than such smaller LCD inside! Comparing K3ii and K3iii and I don’t know if there is any larger LCD behind glass in MK3 version than MK2. And look at the right bottom edge with mysterious dent/notch and the thicked bezel on the opposite side … there MUST have been flippy in design and removed at some stage.
