Long story short, don’t buy K3 iii . Ricoh has lost it. Not worth 2 grands at all.
Really disappointed and sad with Pentax, had high hopes for this camera a year ago but as more details were released the more disappointed I became, and then the tests, wow! What has happened ed how could they get it so wrong?
Good review Li long time coming but very worthwhile👍
I said in a forum way back when that the K-3iii should come in at about $1300, and I got flamed for it. I was shocked when they announced its price at $2K. I don’t care how good the OVF and middle finger grip are, they can’t justify that price.
which would you go for, lumix s1r or the k-1 mk ii. used market has a pretty huge price difference between them. but seeing as mirrorless is pretty much the future, would you say its better to just save up a little more and go mirrorless?
Greatly appreciate the effort on your Pentax reviews. I have an upgraded K1 mkii (I regret the upgrade). The K1 was great but for 2 things, the buffer size and the autofocus options (although I get around that easily enough) which I was hoping to see improved in the K3 mkiii as a sign for future tech to be put into future full frame K1 etc. I was never interested in this apsc camera and have sold off most of my apsc gear, but take this as a sign of things to come for the Pentax K1 line or future FF mirrorless GR K1 hybrid.
Pentax was about bang for buck, 3rd party lens support, image quality and the weather sealing was a nice touch. I have a tamron 70-200 f2.8 which is quite nice but wanted a WR 70-200 to go with the other 2 Trinity f2.8 but couldn’t justify the quality of the rebranded premium price of the f4, the price of the f2.8 * with it’s problems just for weather sealing. Missing a WR tele zoom was defeating the purpose of the k1 with the Trinity of lenses.
Although I plan to keep my K1 mkii and get around the magenta cast at 100 iso by raising it to 160 as my DSLR and weather proof camera, the loss of lens support and the creeping price of both lenses and bodies has seen me slowly migrate to Sony… Mostly for Tamron and sigma lens support. I bought the a7r classic when I gave up on the K1 coming out (but then it did but I had the Sony by then) and have now filled out my WR Trinity lenses with some very sharp primes just waiting for the right a7r (hoping the rV does it) with something between the rIII and rIV (option for smaller files) being what I want (not paying the $10,000 AUD for an a1).
Sadly, with the pricey lenses and now the pricey bodies negating the bang for your buck branding, and even worse the image quality and colour/detail retention when pushing and pulling which Pentax was known for also going (that colour shift since the K1 mkii accelerator unit really shat me and I wish I hadn’t done the upgrade), and other brands improving their weather sealing, the new OVF alone is not making a compelling brand identity case for upgrading any of my Pentax gear and signalling poor future outcomes for their FF. I hope not but that is the way the wind is blowing.
Thanks again for the vids.
I own a Pentax K1 Mark 2 , It takes great pics, but I’m sorry Pentax , after seeing this review , I won’t be buying the K3, Pentax up your game, life is not all about big profits. Maybe upgrade the K1 and make it the best all round camera out there. 😀❤️🇦🇺
Hi, Li! Thanks for the video. I never had underexposed image so far (I have only Pentax lences). The AF is very good, I rearly miss the focus. Some things must be also added: eye detection autofocus – doing very good job, pixel shift, astrotracer (i miss the build in gps). Button customisation is great. I can change every setting I want without moving my eye from the viewfinder (it takes some time to adjust everything on place). Yes the price is little to high, but as every new model you pay a little bit more for what you get. Great for sport, wildlife, events etc. For landscapes I am keeping my K1.
as someone who used to lug an rb67 everywhere (doubled my weight on backpacking trips) i just cannot fathom the desire for aps-c’s. i still seek out a decent 4×5 digital back…one day. yeah yeah yeah, something something light, afforable, range blah blah lols.
Thanks for doing the review Li. You were right, I should’ve brought tissues. I can’t believe how poorly the K-3 MkIII performed in the dynamic range tests, that’s always been one of their strengths. I’m thinking my original K-3 would outperform the MkIII. I was still holding out hope of buying one. Originally I wanted it so I could shoot 4K and stills but when I learned the 4K had a crop I bought my self an EM5 MkIII. Shoots great 4K footage with spot on autofocus. I still thought I would buy the K-3 MkIII purely as a stills camera but I think I’ll just stick with my trusty K-3 for now. Eventually I’ll probably upgrade to a Nikon Z7 for stills. Thanks for all your efforts, I still would like to see the 450mm lens test. 👍
Thanks for the review~! Sadly I went outside and tested out the same setting. Yup, the entire image does tend to go purple when you push the shadows. I am disappointed.
1.100 dollars/euros for a camera with a UHS II slot, 4k video, a focus joystick, a 10% bigger optical viewfinder, 12 fps continous burst? Surely You like provocations! I think that this camera should assest its price around 1500 and that should be fine. That said, Nikon D500 could not be refreshed in a dslr format, the same, maybe for the Canon 90D. And, finally, Pentax now is a small company and cannot compete in price (giving new features and continuing R&D) with the CanoNikon world, it is simple as that. Make peace with this facts, please.
I have the 150-450mm on order but I will stick with my KP thank you 🙂 Seems like Pentax could fix many of it’s issues in firmware but we will see.
Hi Li! I don’t like your skin colors in this video. They are too vivid. almost cartoonish. There are patches too pink, others too orange, and sometimes green. Your Lumix videos looked better.
Yep, I’d like to see the 150-450 in action. Damn man… I was really excited for this camera when it was coming out. I thought they would be smart enough to see where they stood in the camera market and realize that they needed to put out an absolute banger. There are just too many drawbacks though, even for stills (I’ll just exclude video since I never use my camera for video). You really broke down how this camera is in no way better than what is now dated competition, yet more expensive. I just don’t see how Ricoh doesn’t realize they can’t do that. If it’s $2k, there needs to be some area of performance in which the camera is better than others.
I think I said it before, but I’ll ride out my K-1 system for as long as it lasts. Then I’ll have to seriously evaluate things once the body or lenses start breaking down. Nothing about this camera makes me think I would invest in a K1iii immediately upon it’s release if that ever happens. That was really my interest in the K3iii.
Thanks for the video. I think it will get people talking.
Hell yeah. Fair and honest review of the K3-III. Fan boys be chewing me up on FB when I back your findings. Shit’s tough, my guy 🙁
I’d say the underexposure issue is an algorithm that’s intended to produce useable skies. In the Nikon and Canon the skies are blown out–no definition in the clouds. It’s true that the camera-produced JPGs may be more useable in the N & C, but one can recover and warm up the foreground in post-p. with the Pentax. I don’t have the K-3iii. The buffer definitely amazes on the Nikon.
Glad I waited. I’ll stick with my KP for now.
at that rate the next Pentax camera is gonna be some kind of KitchenAid seeing how much Ricoh likes making machines that bake…….
How about a K3 vs K-3-iii ?
The D500’s buffer actually isn’t all that big. I was getting about 32 RAW images recording onto the slower UHS-I SD card before I bought my XQD and even then I was getting about 60 images before it ran into buffer issues since I bought the slowest XQD. Now, with the faster XQD or a CFExpress card it will do 200 frames. What you’re seeing is the incredible write speed of the faster cards since the SD cards are slower than even the slowest CFExpress cards available now.
