I believe Anya has some level of disassociative disorder due to her deep trauma, that’s why she always refer herself in third person, and also the way she refers to Loid and Yor Chichi and haha respectively.

I think it totally fits her character: one, she’s not actually six, she just said she’s 6 because Lloyd needed a kid that age, she’s probably 4-5; two, she can read people’s minds, so, like any kid, she picks random words but that doesn’t mean she knows how to use them; three, she was an experiment and an orphan that was returned 4 times. That is going to leave a gap in your knowledge.

I get what Yuta’s saying: chichi & haha are specifically referring to the speaker’s parents in the third person. It is weird/incorrect to do this with the person you are speaking to about themselves. I just got caught up on the series, but am following the English dub rather than sub.

I thought that maybe Anya was learning to speak that way because she’s been reading minds (specifically Loid’s) for so long. I figure she would often hear “omae” often while listening to thoughts.

I think a video about it would be fun! I feel proud because when I watch it, I could notice by myself that it was unusual before they mentioned it. I especially like how he uses 「えむ」、though I don’t know if I spelled that correctly! I hope you’ll make a video about it someday!

Anya’s misuse of Japanese words and grammar is a part of the show’s comedy, so it’s good to know for even foreigners who aren’t learning Japanese.

what is your opinion of most translations translating chi chi to “papa”.
I would say that chi chi is closer to “father”

Originally I thought this was very strange

But then I realized, the words “mommy” and “daddy” can have different meanings if used by different people

A little girl or boy calling their parents these things isn’t strange at all

But if you refer to somebody else’s “mommy”, it is almost always in a condescending way.. like a bully might say “going to run home to mommy?”

And ‘daddy’ can have a weird sexual connotation sometimes

Moreover, calling your own mom ‘mother’ or dad ‘father’ can seem a little awkward or even rude

Thank you for pointing that out, now I have a good reason to tell my girlfriend about this issue. She keeps saying Anya’s way of speaking Japanese is totally fine because the story setting is not in Japan (which I find ridiculous btw and that’s not a valid reason) 😀

So why does manga/anime use incorrect Japanese? It’s nearly all incorrect and as a learner, I do notice. But it’s a Japanese author writing it to a Japanese audience. Do Japanese growing up in a keigo/non-keigo culture get put off with the way manga is written? Or do they not even notice? Yuta-sensei notices as he’s created many videos like this one. But in the end, is he actually bothered by the way manga incorrectly portrays the Japanese language and it’s many rules?
