I think it’s interesting that I’m an English speaker but I’ve had enough exposure to Japanese to be able to tell when Anya is speaking weird.

she’s basically saying “my mama/papa” which is definitely weird grammatically. like saying “my mama, do you want to hold hands?” just sounds so wrong.

i also picked up the fact that she speaks in the third person. Anya would say her own name, but the subtitles would translate it as I/me.

I think it is more contextual to the anime/manga on how Anya sees how the relationship means to her. Anya uses “chichi” and “haha” to denote (perhaps subconsiously) that they are actually not really her father and mother; i.e she refers to them more in a third person sort of way. I am thinking that the manga/anime ending might have Anya finally use the “otousan” and “okaasan”, an acceptance that they are now truly father and mother to her. Just specualation of course.

i also think it’s interesting that loid chose “otousama” as a word to portray a normal, upper crust family relationship, when i’m sure becky wouldn’t refer to her father that way. it makes me think that he was initially trying to turn anya into a kind of “ojousama” personality type that a) would never ever work and b) probably doesn’t reflect the majority of rich girls.

I’ve only seen a few clips of this anime, but the reason might be simple: Anya is not so smart, she is a child with a normal intelligence and at that age it is normal to mistake words (for example she believes that in a “bakery”, people cook bacon). Ps. sorry for my English

I think little details like that added by the writers are really cool subtle characterization points. It does a good job at showing that she is smart, but still very limited by her young age and small life experience.

アーニャがわざと間違えた日本語を話すことで、日本語ネイティブの人なら「アーニャかわいいいい」ってなるんだけど、日本語わからない人からしたら確かに「義理の両親だからそう呼んでる」って解釈にもなってしまいそう。

Well they aren’t technically her parents, she’s adopted so does it matter? To keep up with the illusion of real family she should use Otousama more often i’m guessing?

I think the True explaination for this is also the simplest.

Anya is only about 4 or 5, and therefore isn’t an expert on language, which is why they have her mess up words and phrases at other points in the show.
