Just my two cents, but I think Anya says the improper terms for her parents because it shows that the family was initially for show to others. A common theme of the manga and anime is that the family was built upon lies and is maintained by keeping a fake image. Maybe that is why Anya says ChiChi and HaHa all the time. She uses the correct term when she is fronting with others, but within the family the terms are incorrect, emphasizing that the family is a facade and is viewed from the perspective of others. Obviously, we eventually see that Loid, Yor, and Anya begin to warm up to becoming a real family, maybe when they reveal all the secrets they’ve hidden from e/o, Anya can finally use the right terms.

But tbh I don’t know a lot about the Japanese language and it’s nuances but this is my interpretation of it.

Guys I think anya uses ‘chichi’ as a short form for chichioya which means father, and ‘haha’ as a short form for hahaoya which means mother…
But, Nice explanation Yuuta. .. I’m learning Japanese and this helped me a lot with it..😇

Well speaking funny and or incorrectly is a part of her character. Also she is ayong child, having poor or incorrect speaking habits are common for young kids.

Cuz she refers to herself in the third person so the grammar would be kinda wrong in the beginning , right?

I thought it was a genious move from the autor but maybe I’m wrong coz my japanese isn’t good…
If I understand correctly you say 母 or 父 to refere to your parents what she does in those scenes.
But you can’t use it towards a family member…
Neither Yor nor Loid are actually Anyas Family members, they play a facade and anya goes along with it.
So in theory this should be the correct way to adress them, at least if she’s beeing honest about it.

What are your opinions on that?
What am I getting wrong?

I do like the implication of Lloyd saying “please call me Father as the elite do” and Anya saying “Papa”.

It works in the English too because there would be a class gap in between the way children address parents. Lloyd is specifically trying to position his family as being elite and upper class. Anya – who is a 4-5 year old with no concept of class barriers – thinks all these words are interchanges.

It also gives us a nice little bit of world building too. It shows us that Ostania is a country which puts a big emphasis on traditional class structure and formality even at an early age. If we get to see a bit more Westalis it’d be interesting to see if they have a bit more of a liberal, progressive pecking order by contrast.

Can you please help explain then why Lugh Tuaha De kept referring his parents as chichiwe and hahawe? Actually even Daida from ousama ranking says hahawe.

Nice video! I actually just notice Anya thinking about Yor as “haha” in the last episode and thought that was a little strange, I think would sound like Anya using “kaa-chan” and “tou-chan” like Naruto says. I enjoy learn new things about japanese, thank you.

Fascinating! This is a great detail to see now. It seems like good characterization for someone that spent time in an orphanage to be more used to saying chichi and haha since neither her or her peers would ever directly address their parents and only ever be talking about them to someone else.
