I mean, she’s been an orphan her whole life, so of course she doesn’t know how to refer to her parents in “second person”, only in “third person”. She never had anyone to directly call her mother or father, she only ever had the ability to talk about parents in third person.

Thank you Japanese learning app of mine for teaching me both otousan/okaasan alongside chichi/haha but not actually explaining to me what the difference was X’D I’d consider it a pretty good app too. Something made me think it was the opposite, with otousan and okaasan being the ones you use when referring to them in a formal/polite way (which I don’t know why considering my previous knowledge tells me how it actually is) and chichi and haha being the one you’d use _with_ your parents.

For me I see this as anya having respect that she knows that she needs to formally speak because she knew that the family is built only for the mission and nothing else

there was a theory that anya is super language smart in the manga/// as she know languages that even adults have hard time knowing in the manga/// the reason she use chichi and haha has to do with her origins that are yet to be reveald & her using 3rd person even speaking about herself (i dont remeber where i read that but it was some type of manga canon) im sure the mangaka knows that its wrong use but it was done on propose.

i saw some comments say that its weird for kids to call thier parents in a formal way, so i want to say that its not weird, its about culture and education the parents gave their children, it doesnt mean the kids and parents are distant. some of us who use formal langauge just do it cuz we thing the words are more pretty. XD i still have the habit of using formal russian speech with my close family: they find it funny and cute, but i just like the use of formal language and its something that stayed with me from childhood cuz part of the culture is using formal language with older people & stragner or distant relatives XD.
(im also multilanuage, so like i use formal speech in every langauge i know, which is hilarious even to me, and the reason is that its best to learn a fomral speech in a langugae to avoid being rude by mistake)

if something its more weird for me that teens in america to reffer to their dad as “SIR” instead of the formal “father” when they are getting scolded or something… (but i understand that its just cultural differance between west and east)

thanks this is a cool explanation. I used to sometimes read translated novels and the translators sometimes put notes in explaining things like this, I always enjoyed having the nuances that I was missing or noticed but could not understand explained.

Here some questions from my anime only knowledge…
How about the use “Haha-ue” or “ChiChi-ue” when they call their own parents in some old time anime plots if you compared it to how anya used it?

I think maybe Anya calls Loyd “chichi” because he said to her this line: “If anyone asks, you’ve allways been my doughter.” Maybe thats why she calls Loyd in that way. The other wise maybe she didn’t learned how there worlds really works.

Meanwhile my bf put me a nickname 3 years ago “chichi” which means chispin in Spanish.. in English would be like little when the first time I heard Anya saying “chichi” I got in shock XD
