Wow, the attention to detail in Anya’s way of speaking really shapes her as a real character with a background story. She feels so very real like a real person, not just a 2D. I love how creators take note to that to really build a character

Well Anya was an orphan and no one has really taught her proper grammar for one. And I just think that chichi and haha is just her own way of idolising the state of having her own adoptive parents before she was adopted and that just became a habit that’s carried forward… I think it’s a literary device more than anything

That was interesting. Thanks! I think one main reason Anya has no clue is because she was not raised in a normal setting either. She might not have known the concept of calling her own mom ‘okaa-san’ and probably never knew her father. But she also probably never visited normal households so she could naturally learn these terms either. If the researchers at the lab ever mentioned the concept of moms and dads, they would have used something like chichi and haha, so it makes sense Anya would as well. Also, they were probably not interested in her learning to speak correctly so they never gave her feedback when messing her words. It’s clever from the author the way he make her speak.

I think Anya uses those terms in order to be able to use them for the interview process. So it’s easier to remember her to remember for the interview. She is definitely younger than she tells Loid in the beginning of the show how much so I don’t know. ( Haven’t read the Manga yet)

Given her age and her history, wouldn’t it be because Anya has heard other kids talk about their parents and calling them Haha and Chichi so she thinks if she gets her own parents that’s how she should call them? She might have noticed that the other words are not specific to one’s parents but Chichi and Haha are! Her happiness at calling them Chichi/Haha may tell that it’s her very specific way of identifying them as hers on top of her not so good language skills. Just a thought as this incorrect word association is something I would expect from my nephews and nieces her age too.

This is an absolutely fascinating explanation of Anya’s speech. As we know, she grew up in a controlled and experimental environment in which she was dehumanized to great extent. Her power of “reading people’s minds” is not enough for her to fully fit into society without the care and love she gets from her made-up family (not to forget she keeps saying people/certain places are scary). Yor, Loyd, and Anya all have their own missing pieces in their personal lives which they get to fill in with the affection the get from one another. Looking forward to that point in the story that Anya gets to call them her mom and dad!
