Should’ve also pointed out that unlike her peers at school, Anya wasn’t raised in a posh high-class environment so her use of language would’ve made sense for someone like her.

I appreciate this. Part of me wonders though if she’s actually very smart and set it up that way so she would always be in the right mindset to address loid properly to others from the get go. There’s certainly room for her young age making this unlikely but given she’s excited by the secret spy mission and that she is such a young child, an orphan, and having a family member is something special, this could also be one of those cases where she is saying a phrase cause it makes her happy. Kind of like the uniform moment.
Then again I don’t know Japanese and I like to think there’s more going on to Anya with her character here than her just being ignorant 🙂

That’s kinda interesting to me, how come they’re only used when referring to them to someone else?
Assuming the etymology & usage notes I found, they seem very similar to mama/papa (~childish versions of directly addressing a parent where I live).
Kinda curious how the Japanese meaning formed, but I’m not sure how to find out more. It seems a bit paradoxical to me.

I thought Anya used those words because she doesn’t view them as her real parents yet, she doesn’t want the family to go yes but there’s not that genuine connection yet. I hope there’s a scene in the manga where she says the proper terms when speaking to them showing she values them as her real parents and it isn’t pretend anymore.

I think it’s kinda interesting that people say “Papa” and “Mama” in so many different languages.
Japanese, English and German come to mind. I’d say in German, it’s probably the most normal way for kids to address their parents

父 and 母 sound cuter than お父さん and お母さん tho.

Actually, based on their sounds, I would have assumed it was considered a childish way to refer to your parents. The way the words are actually used is interesting I think.

ok..the proper way is indeed the one expresed.. But what if.. only what if .. iwe include this . anya had been adopted 4 time before and iot did not worked… whern loid enter`s the orphanage: anya in a way detects him… and reads his mind .. she knows is an spy whit a mission (to form a family to get in touch with the president) and she knows that mision so in order not o be set aside a 5th time she call him chichi.. to form that bond…and the same goes to yor… she needs to form a bond with them . so she does not be again set aside and have finaly a family(that is anya`s goal) , so if we add that part then is ok in Anya`s mind to call him chihi. And i belive that is the most important part.

Really enjoyed the informative video. Only point I would counter is that you could argue that Anya calls them Chichi and Haha because Loid/Twilight instructs her she needs to essentially perform and convince others he’s been her father for a long time. While a lot of it is “because it’s cute”, it can also be explained loosely from following instructions to keep up the appearance and Anya’s lack of having a family to use the proper terms. She was locked up as an experiment and little importance was put on understanding family structures and the language to correspond to that. From her perspective, she’s probably heard other kids talk about “chichi and haha” before going to the orphanages and thus thinks this is how you generally talk. Also, her only media exposure is a spy drama.
