For people freaked out about Yuri’s seemingly obsessive and “incestuous-looking” love for Yor (long comment, beware):

A lot of people take this the wrong way, but in anime, when a child says to their older sibling or cousin/relative/neighbour/childhood friend etc. “When I’m older, I’m gonna marry you!” Most of the time it’s meant to signify the strong bond and familial affection they have for that person, it’s not meant to be a romantic feeling. In the eyes of children, the concept of marriage is perceived differently; whenever they see their parents or other married couples, they only get to see the “familial” side of the relationship (most of the time), since that’s what a married couple often shows outwardly, so children usually aren’t privy to the romantic and sexual side of that love, and think that marriage is a relation between two people that like each other a lot “wholesomely”, I suppose.

To make to clearer, in Greek, the concept of ‘love’ is segmented into seven different types. The most common types of love that couples seem to display towards each other (be it publicly or privately) are ‘Eros’ and ‘Storge’, with Eros roughly being translated to ‘romantic/sexual love’ and Storge to ‘unconditional/familial love’. As I mentioned previously, children only get to see the ‘Storge’ love, which in turn means they themselves are only able to express that kind of love towards an older sibling/parental figure. With that in mind, Yuri’s love is taken to a comical extreme in order to create comedic relief narratively, as well as serve as indirect commentary on the siscon/brocon character archetype. His attitude towards his sister then unfortunately and unintentionally seems to create an image in the majority of viewers/readers’ eyes that his love has incestuous undertones, when in fact he’s much closer in character to a kid that doesn’t want his mom to remarry a stranger. And honestly, as of the most current SPY X FAMILY chapter, his “feelings” towards Yor have not been confirmed nor denied, but personally I highly doubt it to be what people think it is. Nonetheless, his sister complex is super weird without a doubt, perhaps even uncomfortable for many.

Either way, people gotta stop the unnecessary Yuri hate when you don’t get the character. If you dislike him and his personality in general, that’s fine, but if you hate him because you got the wrong impression and think he’s in love with his sister, you gotta think a bit more about why he’s written the way he is.

Its ok. When I was a kid I thought that when I grew up I would have to marry my sister. That’s how clueless I was back then. I was too blown away when Yuri said that, but kids are kids. Ha!
