Saying “chichi” and “haha” Maybe was the author’s way to hide the fact that Anya still doesn’t consider her family as “real” and that when the series will end then she can say “otousan” or “okaasan” since by then she believes and loved the fact that she now has a real father and mother.

Honestly, Anya is definitely refreshing in the way that she speaks. The mundane day-to-day Japanese can get overwhelming at times and extremely stressful. Sometimes, we just need a nice relaxing moment with Anya speaking Japanese.

Learning that chichi isn’t a natural or common way for a child to call their father is kinda sad. The way Anya says chichi is quite possibly the cutest, most adorable way of saying daddy/papa I have ever heard in any language.
Are children not allowed to be adorable to their birth parents at all (/sarcasm)?

3:10 I’m remembering an anecdote by the American physicist Richard Feynmann: In order to go to a conference in Japan, he tried to learn a bit of Japanese and bought a book of Japanese words and sentences. Unfortunately, that book was made for American soldiers in WW2. So, when they had to move from Tokyo to Kyoto (the conference was held in two parts, one on each city) the workers of the bus were delaying the departure, and Feynmann went to them yelling “Hayaku! Hayaku! Ikimasho! Ikimasho!” The bus workes were like “Yes, sir! Inmediately, sir!” and departed inmediately.

It’s a bit ironic that the Japanese form of see/watch (miru) sounds very similar to the Spanish form of that same verb (mirar).

This is so interesting!! It also gives a nuance to Anya’s character, I think. Like the fact that she calls Loid “chichi” — I wonder if the writers decided to use that because Anya was from an orphanage and were around other children who lost their family as well.

Anya is still very young so you can excuse her. Kids tend to flub words a lot to try making sense of them. It’s just a thing they do. You also need to remember that Anya is adopted and Japanese isn’t her first language. This happens in the US too as those adopted from foreign countries tend to struggle with English for a few years before getting it fully. Also those learning English their pronunciation tends to stray for a long time until they get most of it.
