I’ve been studying Japanese for a while but I always got tripped up on this, not because of Spy Family but because in most languages, people (mostly children) address their parents or grandparents by using some easy-to-say phoneme and repeating it. For example: dada, mama, papa, nana etc. So, I thought for this reason it would be the same, but it’s in fact the opposite. Also, I love Shin-chan

Crazy I just looked up the words for family for a refresher TODAY and heard chi chi and ha ha for the first time. They don’t sound very respectful.

From my understanding “父” (ちち） is like the word “Father” in English and ”母” (はは）is like “Mother”. They are also polite ways to refer to your parents but people don’t usually call their parents by those words. Would you say this is correct?
