I just wish they would make a little zipped picket about chest height on the bib shorts the right size for a set of house keys and a small wallet. I don’t want my house keys and wallet falling out of the pockets on my jersey and I don’t want to keep them in the saddle bag.
Women don’t need the bib thing. The wider hips keep the shorts in place.
Always something to spend money on.
I thought that this video was about why I should buy bib shorts instead of cycling shorts, because I have no good reason to. Cycling shorts are cheaper, just as comfortable and less sweaty. I actually cut the straps off my one pair of bib shorts. They never fall down or move around.
Shorts for shorter rides 0-20 miles. Bibs for longer rides 20-up.
Having played another sport my entire life (tennis) with tight semi long boxer briefs, bought a bike 3 months ago, got some bibs, kept the sports tight polyester boxer briefs on, finished a 60 mile strava challenge with 0 problems.
I asked the other tennis and soccer players and coaches based riders who rode for 40-60 miles and they also use tight fitting boxer briefs. Being long they don’t bunch up while pulling shorts or bibs up.
Reason being: they all been wearing the tight fitting underwear, (as seen on Rafa Nadal every point) keeping things equal vs taking the risk in new commando style and potential other new problems.
Castelli all the way! I’ve replaced all of my shorts and bibs with new Castelli competizone bib shorts, and got two of their new summer entrata tops, a base layer, and I got their gilet last year. All brilliant.
I am tall and slim and spent 2 years in bib shorts before realising the straps pull the pad backwards slightly, I think because of my height – I now find normal shorts (without strap) much more comfortable.
Are there particular brands of bib shorts that are better designed for differences in height? Or am I doing something wrong?
Assos. They’re worth it.

I am more keen to indulge in a pricey bib shorts rather than a pricey saddle.
@GCN: There are special Cross Country MTB bibs. What’s the difference to road bike bibs?
The question is – are there really ‘sits bones’?
Regardless of the topic, if I see Manon, I click and watch. She’s the best.
I think that shorts with straps are also warmer and lead to more seating – I much prefer the strapless version and never was afraid that I may lose them due to the missing straps.
Bib shorts are over praised and over used by modern day cyclists! the statement that the waist band in shorts is restrictive is rubbish a fit cyclist does not even notice this small pressure on the waste line. However he does notice the rise in body heat caused bu those straps and the webbing between them. How often do you see top riders with his jersey fully unzipped and flopping in the wind causing a huge drag in an effort to simply cool down. Loose the bibs, stay cooler and save energy going up hill.
The difference between a poor quality cheap shorts and a good ones is indeed huge. If we want to be confortable is good to invest straight away. Also dont’ forget to wash it after every use and without softeners.
Don’t like them. Maybe cos I’m tall, but they are always too tight on my nads! Regular shorts are just fine!
I know the stock market is a bit crazy at the moment, but I’m hesitant to invest. I’d imagine trading with bib shorts can get pretty smelly, and I can’t imagine the ROI is very big in the next 5 years 😉
It’s hardly much of an investment, you can get a decent pair for about 40 quid. Why would anyone riding a bike costing a hundred times that NOT wear bib shorts?
if you like one pair , buy two or more
