I stick with bibs under $100 and find there is a diminishing return on cost. Have been seriously disappointed with bibs costing double and surprised by those around $30. One thing to consider with a bib not mentioned in the video is fit. Make sure you buy the right size which can be extremely difficult with all the cuts and global manufacturers. If the bib doesn’t fit, it will be uncomfortable and cause you to think the bib is no good. Fit is just as important than quality.
I ride to the store down the street occasionally without bike shorts and gloves. Feels like I’m naked.
Bib shorts all the way! Been wearing them for over 30 years. Definitely recommend the over the shoulder style, though they can be inconvenient for comfort breaks, they are way more comfortable on longer rides. Also, if your jersey rides up a little, you won’t get a ridiculous tan line at your waist.
Never mind the bib-shorts (although very instructive), I like the countryside where these are filmed. It’s the Cotswold’s I guess. More cycling around these parts please.
What seems to be missed in all video’s is that different shorts work with different saddles.
I have a least 8 pairs of bib shorts from different manufacturers endura, Le Col to name a couple. I have found that depending on which shorts you have from a manufacturer they don’t all work with 1 saddle. This is really difficult because you either stick to 1 pair of shorts or buy multiple pairs of one type.
A full-length bib for yours truly !!! – I cycle in the early morning and winter … when it can be cold … Bibs are something you learn about as you get more experienced, and don’t look back.
I always thought that ‘bibs’ were the ones with the shoulder straps because they were like coveralls/overalls and shorts were simply…’shorts.’
My first “thumbs down” Title very misleading. She talks mainly about qualities of good biking shorts in general, and only briefly about bib/nonbib differences
I definitely prefere shorts with chamois. But please no bibs! Just shorts…
Re. the history of cycling shorts, when I started cycling in the early 1960s I wore wool shorts (no bib shorts were available), with real leather chamois inserts. They were perfectly comfortable and, combined with a Brooks Professional saddle (all the rage with the pros at that time including Anquetil), enabled my cycling to encompass pretty long distances including London to Brighton and back with no problems. You young whipper snappers don’t know yer born.
All I can say is cycling clothes are some of the most unconfortable clothes I ever worn. They seems to be 2 sizes smaller than they should be. Frankly, I wear a pair of cycling padded underwear and the rest is comfortable clothes. Then again I’m no pro, just love having expensive bikes and putting some miles on long stretches of scenic roads!
Never really liked bib shorts. I was always a cycling shorts type of guy.
Shorts with straps are bib shorts. Shorts without straps are just shorts.
I bought a pair on line still waiting on them 42 dollars free shipping. What tead me off from China 5D padding time will tell eh
@ 03:20 Looks like love!
I’m a firm believer in good cycling shorts but have steered clear of bibs. I am on the short side and worry the “bib” will be too long to work on my small frame. Any thoughts?
Nice bike stand. Where’d you get it?
Why not just get a seat that is more comfy ?
The most important things you will spend money on in cycling all have to do with your contact points with the bike.. Nothing else matters (really).. So gloves, shoes and shorts are all important (and saddle!). However as a seasoned cyclist (15 years riding, 10 of those doing amateur and world ameteur races) I’ve come to the conclusion that bib shorts are simply a waste of time and money. Although hard to find, there are good cycling shorts without the bibs. They wear more easily and quickly, and are WAY more easier to navigate when you’re in a port-a-loo just before the race, whatever your gender. And when I’ve finished a hard ride I can’t get my kit off quickly enough… and sure enough shorts are faster to take off than bibs. I find they’re just as comfortable as bibs and don’t find that they move down over the ride. So don’t believe all the stories about bibs are pro.. Maybe they are, but if you’re a pro you won’t be buying them, you’ll get them as part of your uniform. For us amateurs out there, shorts are all we need. Just make sure they’re a good comfortable pair!
Love bibs! It’s a shame they weren’t really widely available for women until the last five years. Also, I will not be purchasing castelli shorts ever again! I purchased nanoflex tights and the chamois was extremely abrasive. They were kind enough to send me a different tight and although it wasn’t causing me blinding pain it was bulky, awkward and not very effective. I love OrNot, Machines for Freedom and Giordana. PI is ok but only PRO and Elite NOT select. I really want to get a pair of Assos since they have that cool front closure and also very much want a pair of Ten Speed Hero bibs. so cuuuuuuuuuuute
