I run Magura HS33Rs – I know what you mean about the brake lock – I have my brake levers set up so you can have the levers on 3/4 and they don’t activate the brakes – only activate the brakes in the last 1/4 of the lever movement so when downhilling, especially on gravel, you can have the levers in your grip, pulled 3/4, while still having a pretty solid grip on the bar and, when you need brakes, just that little extra 1/4 lever squeeze, gives you brakes.
Takes a little tweaking to get the brakes to give the amount of braking you want.
My rear only full locks at 100% lever squeeze – my front is set to never lock – gives maybe 75% breaking at full lever squeeze.
You can barrel the down hill hard while holding the bar and brake levers 3/4 on.
Worst thing is reaching for your levers in downhill technical when you don’t really wanna loosen your bar grip.

I run shimano saints and they are insanely powerful but it’s not about the brakes…it’s the rider skills and stop blaming the parts…but it’s your choice and money. Ride trail and practice often then you won’t blame the bicycle parts.
