The 101 focus points tell me that those probably are for the OVF and there probably is no live view mode for photos.
I’m tossed up about this camera. The high ISO I think is groundbreaking. Not because it’s 1.6 million, but you should be able to get clean shots at say 25,000 ish ISO. I do agree that for a Pentax camera, it’s great, but compared to all the other options, it’s “ok”. The verdict really won’t be known until its actually released. We have no idea what the real life AF improvements are, what the image quality and video quality is like etc. Until those aspects are known, I’m sitting on the fence waiting to see what my next move is going to be. Most people have mentioned just grabbing the K-1 series full frame instead due to the pricing. And that’s a problem when the apsc camera is roughly the same price. Hard for people to justify buying the K-3 III vs moving up to full frame. We’ll just have to wait and see what the camera translates to in the real world. Great opinion video! Loved every second of it 🙂
The majority of the horde is going over to mirrorless. I guess Pentax calculates a business case based on the remains of the horde who does not want to deal with EVF or 20fps. There may be indeed a niche left big enough for Pentax, if you don’t want to grow that much it may be ok. But to be hones, this promotion video is a piece of shit, this is hurting my eyes and ears, simply terrible, one of the worst I ever saw. My god.
I think pentax is clever launching those crazy budget promos. Their true marketing is right here with youtubers like you. Its genius! 😂
Pro shooter since the 80s. Always a Pentaxian. Was interested in this, but the price point seems way too high for the tech. Will go used K-1 and new glass instead.
Ricoh’s turnover is $18.5 B. Pentax is just one of their products. Pentax has been around for a long time. You’re a pentaxian… or you’re not.
Funny how people judge a dslr based on specs. A dslr produces images. If the images turn out great, it is a great dslr. This is the only way you can judge a camera. I haven’t seen any images from the K3 III yet, so I can’t judge this camera. Yes, other brands might have better specs, but do they produce better images? Or do we need the best specs? I don’t…I shoot with a K1 mark II that produces great images. Autofocus is great, I think…. Also I don’t need to shoot x frames/sec in order to get a keeper. I think it is more rewarding to make a beautiful picture with only one shot. Let’s wait til the camera has been released and tested properly… I think we’re in for a surprise…
In case you didnt know pentax has been doing medium format digital since 2010
As a K-3 (Mark 1) user, I’m excited for the ultrasonic sensor cleaner. That excessive ISO will hopefully enable me to see and focus better in pitch black conditions when imaging at night. Adding more focusing points, another focusing method and faster autofocusing will allow me to get even more sport images. The feature Pentax has been pushing is that their new pentaprism makes the image in the viewfinder about 10% brighter. Their weather sealing is already exceptionally good. They are trying to position themselves as a DSLR option for those that need something more rugged than a mirrorless camera can provide. They want to carve out their niche and stick to it, in my opinion, as everyone else discontinues their DSLR offerings.
I loved my Pentax K3ii, in almost every way. Beautiful files, great colours, super handling and ergonomics. Astrotracer, built in GPS, small in size yet great to hold and use, weathersealed completely, the list went on and on…
BUT! The autofocus was ultimately what killed it for me. I sold all my Pentax gear this year for a used Canon 5Diii and L glass and whilst heavier, I can rely on it to capture what I focus on. And that, ultimately, and as sad as it is to say, is always what is most important with any camera.
If the AF can be on par with Canons 5D iii, then I’m interested. If not, then sadly it’s not for me.
Love my Pentax cameras, latest one is the KP, it is Great camera! But the great thing is everyone gets a choice, buy what you enjoy shooting!
This will fail miserably… No one in there right mind would buy this in 2021…Sure they will sell some units… But.. Nowhere near what they want… Now .. If you told me it was $499 …Then I would say it has a shot…😎
Just to nit-pick a little. You made a small mistake when reading the specs. The battery is not a D-L190. It is a D-LI90. The D-LI90 was first used in the K-7 and has been used in the K-5, K-3 and the K-1.
No mention of the lack of a articulated, or at least a hinged screen. It’s a deal breaker for me (a simple hinge would have sufficed) and many others I gather. The price is very close to the FF K-1ii.
I think they are so desperate and so far behind in market share they have to do something(OVF).I agree with you on the specs,it’s way behind the competition.People are buying mirrorless, that is the 2020 market and the future. No new shooter is going to buy this.Just my opinion.
This announcement is rather anti climactic to this old time Pentax user. I started in the late 70’s with a Spotmatic F, followed by a ME Super, a K1000, a LX (which I stupidly sold after 30 years of use), a ist dl2, a K-3 and now a K-1. I’m telling you, if Pentax doesn’t come out with a worthy competitor in the full frame world, I’m gone. I’m already using a Fuji X-T4 as a 2nd camera for urban, casual and family photography. Come on Pentax, stick your head out of the sand.
I have to admit that my evf cameras – Olympus and Panasonic – let me down when I adjust exposure values. I often underexpose to get more saturated colors, especially in the Fall season. But too often what looks right in the evf turns out to be way underexposed, even unusable. Maybe my cameras are too old? I do tend to buy used. Will the pentaprism give me correct representation? I don’t want to spend $1900 plus the cost of glass to find out, and the reason I went MFT is the compactness. I do shoot medium format film as well and have a Pentax 645. I like it a lot, though I’m just as happy with my Fuji 690 and GA645. The Pentax 645D is out of my price range, but I appreciate it is half the price of other (Fuji) digital MF cameras, which I will never own unless I win the lottery, which I don’t play. .
J chritina..I have a question..you described this camera as a good camera for 2016.. now, in your opinion, if your chosen 2020 camera makes you a better photographer than if you shoot with this “2016” Pentax camera?.
need eye focus…this is a must today and should be what camera makers should focus (pun wasn’t intended) and improve (not introduce) on. I love my Pentax but common…ISO improvement and OVF?
It’s not exactly a ‘Steve Jobs’ level presentation 🤪
