I believe the Nikon D500 goes up to 1.5 Million ISO
Any studies on the blue light effects or possible damage from the mini tv screens on mirrorless cameras on the human eye ? asking for a friend
This is Japanese culture , not North American culture, the world is a big place 🙂
Years ago Nikon pulled a similar ISO stunt: The D500 has had an ISO 1,640,000 mode. People said: wow, Nikon good, champ, but than we all saw that this is a Swiss Cheese Mode. Useless. A complete disaster, and a stain on Nikon’s claim “we are the image above all.”
Had an ME back in the day (1980s) It was well built and good to use, if limiting. Pentax has fond memories for me. I’m pleased they are sticking with and continuing to develop SLR optical viewfinders. This is the same way I feel about Leica & Fuji for continuing to build rangefinder cameras. That said, I’m unlikely to buy one.
For me most confusing was K-1 mark I vs K-1 mark II differences.
To EXPENSIVE thanks but no thanks!!
JCristina does not understand this. The answer is Economics. For their users who own lots of Pentax lenses. No need to spend a ton of money. Pentax will bide its time and when full frame sensor is very cheap, Pentax can make a mirrorless. Easy. Just include an adapter to use with their old lenses. I have seen excellent photos taken by others with a Pentax digital K-01 mirrorless camera using Vivitar macro lens. Budget price.
I used to be with Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Fujifilm. From those best for me was Fujifilm, especially with their jpg engine. BUT, I discovered, that with Pentax, I just slowed down and started to really think about the capture (Sony / Nikon? those cameras takes pictures for you with their pic-tweeks, I do not like). With Pentax, how you operate it, how you feel it with OVF and legendary ergonomy is that, what I was looking for. I am since 3 years with K-3II, Limiteds 15F4, 20-40 2.8-4, 40 2.8, 70 2.4 (sold) and 50-135 2.8, grip etc. NEVER fellt better with cam and “making pictures”, instead of taking them. Love Pentax for being original in those days of full of mirrorless cams. Any way: good move to stick to their Legacy – and those glasses, colors (green button ! ). My pictures are, here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/tru_the_olys/albums Not much due to lack of time, still learning too. Cheers!
Pentax have such a small percentage of camera sales they may as well stick with DSLRs. They tried the K-01 APS-C and Q mirrorless cameras, and both are discontinued. The only camera the company make that gets people excited, is the Ricoh GR series. The mirrorless market is a bearpit, and getting rougher with each passing year.
Seems nothing more than a ‘rationalization’ of its strategy to stay with old tech. Pentax did well when it attempted some innovation with mirrorless through the K-01. It could have went further with that. But, because it did not, now it is ‘stuck’ with its old tech. I wonder if anyone has guessed that Ricoh just does not have the money or management skill to guide the Pentax line and continue to make it an innovative company. You may think they will be around in 2027 while still producing DSLRs. But, I think not. Ricoh just does not have the skill or where with all to manage to stay alive that long. Should Canon keep the SL3 alive or Nikon keeps the D850 going, Pentax is done for. Just think, one camera from a competitor could kill an entire company.
I linked over here because this was posted via one of the Pentax Facebook groups. I need to say I think you did a great job of being balanced on your thoughts about the launch. I’ve dabbled with other cameras but I’ve shot Pentax for the last 25 years or so. I still have glass that was given to me by friends that is well over 20 years old that works just fine and I enjoy shooting so its been good to stick it out with Pentax.
I do find it kind of funny when people that don’t shoot Pentax review it on its video acumen or lack thereof ( Its terrible), but I don’t carry around a DSLR to shoot video.
When I’m shooting I feel connected to what I’m shooting and at the end of the day I can say I saw it, I shot it, and it was an effort on my part to create and capture art. I personally feel that the feed from an EVF feels soulless. I understand what is being said when Pentax talks about wanting to preserve the feeling of connecting with your photography subject. I think the next step down the EVF route is to just capture video and pull the stills out that you want. Once you get to 8k+ resolutions why wouldn’t you?
All in all I agree with your summary. I would like to see more from Pentax and how they can innovate, but in the end I’m glad they are trying to be the best camera company they can be. Not the best Camera/Video/whatever else.
Great review, thank you. May I ask a dumb question? Why is the name “Matk” featured in so many cameras names? What does it represent? Thank you so much.
With a Canon 90D going for about $1200 new with 120fps full HD and 32MP and a large amount of ef and ef-s lenses available, $1900 is gong to be a tough sell unless the second card slot is worth $700 additional dollars to someone. Though long in the tooth, there are great specials for a full frame 5DS $1299 new. I do like dslrs and Pentax made a nice full frame model, but $1900 for an aps-c camera seems a little high compared to other models that are available.
I agree they’re making a product for people that wants a clack, but in 3-4 years when the price drops, it would be a great value and even better if you already have pentax glass.
Would like to purchase, but not in my budget. Wish they would add a tilting screen. Also, think the super-duper high ISO is not really necessary.
Yes, ISO 1.6 million. Pentax has always done an outstanding job in noise reduction. Their latest KP APS-C camera is a bit better than Nikon D500 and almost as good as Nikon D750 with respect to very high ISO noise (25.6 – 51.2 k), if you compare DP review test chart.
If you use a mirrorless camera you are not feeling it with your heart, what a lame and pathetic video from Pentax.
Pentax don’t want to make compact mirrorless cameras, so please stick to their big fat clunky DSLRs.
The K3 mkIII is probably not even worth it if you own Pentax lenses, because the Pentax KP costs half as much and is just a good DSLR, it will cost as much as the fullframe Pentax K1 mkII and no doubt Pentax will release a K1 mkIII within 2 years, which is what Pentaxians really want. It also competes with the quite brilliant and cheaper (but more plasticy) Canon EOS 90D and Nikon D500. So what’s the market for this camera? It might be the best APS-C DSLR ever made, but what’s the value in that? Lol, as a Pentaxian I still do want this camera, but I don’t have any rational arguments to defend buying one having seen the announcement video 😀
