It is a great camera and will sell like hot cakes!!
Why no captions?
One could purchase a brand new Nikon D7500 which is also an apsc DSLR for 800 bucks or less. I mean not to take the piss but that camera has 2018 specs but anyway that k to f mount adapter will work for that pentax glass but I don’t believe one exists with electronic contacts so no autofocus… so there’s that. I absolutely respect them for sticking with the DSLR and I won’t lie when I say for me personally I still prefer an OVF to an EVF (yes even the new Sony A7s3 EVF) but that doesn’t mean that I can’t adapt to new things and I imagine that they’ll continue to improve. All the best to this classic brand though. Cheers
I’ll have tons of pentax glass. Will not go back to that for such an “outdated” new camera. Maybe for 1500-1600 bucks I would overthink my decision. I’m a fan for my Fuji 100F, maybe upgrading to X-T4 or waiting for a successor to the original Canon EOS R. The R5 is way too much for me.
Hello Joseph,
As we approach another “Turn of the Wheel”, Happy Samhain to you and your family.
Pentax… Back in the day, Pentax was a major competitor in the consumer SLR arena, as anyone
with years in the photographic arts knows.
I started with Nikon with a Nikkormat (black) and then a year later to the F2Photomic w/ motor drive. Those were the days of photography, but I regress…
I believe Pentax is trying to hold on to their past. In the clip you played, the narrator kept
referring to the camera as an SLR, not a DSLR.
Their “New” was new, as you say, 5 years ago. In an everchanging tech environment and declining sales of all camera brands, Pentax is coming out with too little too late in my opinion.
They refer to this upgrade as their “Flagship”! Wow, what a letdown.
I do not expect Pentax to compete at the levels of SONY, Canon and Nikon but they needed to
step it up, especially in the video department.
Most consumers love their camera phones as they are “Good Enough” for what they want and are improving and being optimized with every iteration.
Pros are using the high end products of the Big 3 which I believe will leave Pentax out in the
cold. For $1900. or so, I can get the new Nikon Z6 II which out performs the K-3 Mark 3.
If I were a Pentax user and bought into their system, I would be very dismayed that after
waiting so long for a new model, the best Pentax can come up with is a new name and prism.
One more thing… the photographer may be looking through a beautiful prism and see all
the colors and light, but in the end, it’s the chip that captures the image and I doubt the
resulting image will look as it did in the Pentaprism.
Thank you for all you do!
dSLR technology doesn’t have a future. However the dSLR cameras will have their followers like the M mount rangefinder cameras.
Different speeds? One is for RAW, the other one is for JPEG. Works.
Nothing against an announcement but why ask Pentax not an professional marketing to make a visual presentation? Executives should only present their products if they are Steve Jobs. Lol I didn’t look to end before I wrote my comment…. Lol… Same sort of thinking….
Yea, the Sony presenter is usually a nice enough looking Japanese engineer, which a terrible dumb founded accent. Lockley for Sony their cameras are the best, Pentax had a difficult job of selling old tec., with a less than photogenic presenter. I hope it the new camera has that fantastic pixel shift feature.
I am not impressed by super high ISO, I yet to experience comfort with ISO over 6400. I love Pentax’s pixel shift feature, if they can improve on that, making it usable for moving images, that would be great!
This camera is made for the K-mount fan base, not prior Canon shooters turned Sony evangelists. From a new camera starved Pentaxian’s perspective this camera is the quialent of landing on Mars even though the specs screams 2016 for the rest of the world
Thanks for your informative videos that I always enjoy watching from Germany. I find your videos very entertaining and I watch them regularly. Thanks also for speaking very slowly and clearly, as I am not a native English speaker, I can still follow the videos very well.
About the Pentax K-3 III: “IF YOUR ONLY TOOL IS A HAMMER, EVERYTHING LOOKS LIKE A NAIL!” A camera that seems like falling out of time. I myself currently take photos with the Olympus OM-D EM-5 II from 2015 (yes, I know, Olympus slept for too long also and had to pay for it), on the other hand, the Olympus MFT system is light and small with a reasonable image quality. Now I’m looking for a new camera system, but of course it’s not just the camera but rather the lenses and the mounts, etc. Will I buy a classic reflex camera in 2020/2021? No way!
Thank you again so much for your videos.
Nikon had ISO 1,638,400 in their D500back in 2016. How did they achieve such high ISO in an APC sensor? They said “Screw image quality, the spec looks good in the brochure.” https://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d500/D500hSLI1638400NR0-ND8.HTM I suspect that Pentax has followed a similar path, but hopefully a little less awful.
If the auto focus is GOOD..i maybe tempted to get it..(have a fuji xh1…AND..pentax kII
I have a soft spot for Pentax. I learnt manual photography with my father’s old Pentax MEII SLR. I got into a lot of concerts with it because security personnel thought it looked like a toy camera. The only modern camera system you could do that with these days might be either micro 4/3 or 1inch Canon M series.
Hi, first thank you for this video… Even if it is not my favorite video on your channel, being a pentaxian 🙂 and knowing why I do prefer Pentax over other brands, I recognise this video is fair when looking only to the specs… (but again, specs do not make picture). There are so many reasons to love shooting Pentax ;). The only thing I strongly disagree with you in this video is your WYSIWYG statement about EVF. This is wrong… If you shoot in JPEG, you should better say WYSIWBWYG: What You See Is What the Body Wants You to Get :). If you are shooting RAW, I do hope you are not seeing what your sensor actually captured :), For raw shooting, I am not really convinced about the added value of EVF over OVF. To be honest, I think it is the other way around, especially when speaking over the excellent PENTAX pentaprism.
Short: I am excited about this camera. I expect IQ will match (or exceed) K1ii regarding noise (not DR probably, but close too). I expect AF will be good margin better. All those extra AF points are there for tracking only. For shooting 25 points is GOOD enough and I never wanted more. I expect biggest improvement in low light AF (which is already better than many competitors). SD cards … yes I moved my ears at 1st but most users use RAW+JPEG and also I reckon in real life the difference in writing speed will be neglectable. We need to perform some tests. If they will really write at max speed of “slower” SD standard it will be HUGE improvement already. What are the real write speeds of other manufacturers? Does they saturate UHS-II? It think this is more for mechanical compatibility than else. Connectivity: yes, I expect decent app or at least some 3th party – I expect tethering support. Touch screen – OK, but I did not demand it. Let see, it might impress me – Pentax usually had good implementation of whatever. Battery = compatible and upgraded at the same time. FPS, more than enough, it is remarkable even today with few cameras better. Video, it is sensor limited this time and they maxed it out. Let see in practice how clumsy or refined handling it will be. Most important if 5-axis SR-II will be used or not. I’m expecting to buy this camera.
I see your (and mine, too) ground problem is NOT being Japanese but western world citizen. Two different worlds. We do not respect. We demand and suppose it is our right. They are different. I know in the end it is a product that will be sold in US, so specs matters. But it seems you are bothered more HOW he present camera, while you are good with specifications. Why basing his excitement about 12 fps, while you also said it is good a minute ago? Let him enjoy. In the end they all do the same – loads of BOLD worlds (iPhone, Tesla, as top offenders). Pentax had no marketing for decade. No they have one. 2nd: What the camera HAD to have for you, to be good camera for 2021? Serious question.
-> I need that camera to upgrade K3ii for fair price since I have lenses. I do not have interest of buying all new lenses for any system. I don’t care what other systems have. I’m fine now, I will be for some years. While NEW SHOOTER will never pick Pentax at all – regardless if this camera would be better than any camera ever produced. In te past many Pentax cameras had groundbreaking features and very very competitive at their level, but few heads got turned. It is whole more to grab major attention. It’s not this camera’s problem, it is Pentax fate since day one of digital photography, to be marginal player. They had 1st DSLR camera, but other brand managed to have 1st usable DSLR. Again repeating with Mirrorless, they skipped it. Yes, they should fork out the camera we desperately wait -> I’m glad they CHOSEN to update it at least! I agree it is probably 2017 design. Imagine they will sell it as it was!
To grab attention Pentax need to build lineup in all areas, all levels and makre SUPERB SUPPORT worldwide.
First, nice to see the new Pentax getting coverage – I can tell you’re trying to get things right. Of course, I don’t agree with anything you said 😉
For the SD slots issue, yeah, I’d like them to be both UHS-II – because one reason to have 2 slots is to shoot on both cards at once. UHS-II is still a big progress over the current Pentax cameras.
I don’t think you’re getting why the President of Ricoh Imaging presented the camera himself, as opposed to hiring some actor: it was, IMO, to express confidence in the brand – and in this product. This is a Japanese company after all.
Remember the AMC Javelin? They looked cool, didn’t they? You might revise your feelings when it was started up and there was a stark difference between the 6 and 8 cylinder models, and the car just didn’t have the options of the other brands. This camera is like the Javelin to me.
Oh, come on, JCristina. Why don’t you try to present your videos in Japanese to a Japanese audience, ok? Enough of your snarkiness. Maybe you’ll be taken more seriously.
