Pen sax ? Pen sucks ? Sorry, but they died for many people years back. Good quality cameras, quite innovating in some areas, but they not keep up with others. But maybe that’s the way ? Everyone give us slow motion, HDR , 240fps , but Pentax give you 30 , and raw penta camera. I don’t know who buy it but I rather stay with smartphone. Not that I have no mirrorless camera, but smartphone is always with me.
OVF is the best for photography . I use my mirror less only for videos. My ,canon 5D is still my favorite . (And the foji x100s)
I shot Pentax for years before switching to Canon. Started with the K50,K3 then K1 and still have a 645Z. Their autofocus is atrocious but if you don’t need that they do produce very good images. If you’re a landscape shooter the K1 is up there with the best, if you shoot sports or wildlife don’t waste time or money on Pentax.
More power to them. All cameras are tools in the hands of those that use them. I am sure that the images from the camera in the hands of a pro will look great.
The price though is in at a point that brings it into competition with Sony, Panasonic, Nikon and Canon, who all offer stellar cameras.
I hope they remain….
I have shot both DSLR and mirrorless and overall prefer a mirrorless camera. The OVF vs EVF argument seems silly to me. OVFs are looking through the lens but the idea that either is better for taking a photograph is stupid. What attracts me to even take a photo is how the scene or subject looks to me as I approach with my eyes. Composing a photo comes after the I have viewed the scene or subject. I need some way to determine what the camera will see and I do not care if it optical or electronic.
The specs seem a bit light for a new camera at that price point when compare to the recent Canon, Nikon, and Sony cameras. But never having a Pentax I probably will not buy one, nothing against the brand its more of a cost issue to swap at this point.
DSLRs will probably evolve into a niche system, probably more popular than MFT. There is a lot of used SLR/DSLR glass available which makes having a DSLR a reasonable option for native glass. There are many situations where a DSLR is just as serviceable as a mirrorless so they are not facing the same problem as the MFT systems face. So a full line up of DSLR cameras from APS-C, full frame, and possibly medium format like the Fujis will still be viable for much longer. Who that is the last DSLR manufacturer, I tend to lean towards Canon or Nikon not Pentax. Canon and Nikon have a full line up DSLRs from introductory to high end pro models with both APS-C and full frame sensors. The market is moving towards mirrorless for general purpose cameras and being wedded to SLR only risks leaving Pentax in weak market position.
Thanks for a balance view on this, I expect there to be a lot of trolling of this camera release. so to hear a reasoned response is appreciated. My main camera is the FF K1 ii and I back this up with a KS2, so this would be a replacement for that camera. Is the K-3 iii everything I wished for… no, I was hoping for an innovative feature like a hybrid viewfinder, usually Pentax come out with something, Astro tracer being a prime example but also adopting pixel shift technology and implementing IBIS in a DSLR. The outstanding feature they are promoting is the the viewfinder but an enhanced conventional one, not a hybrid, (having not experienced it we will have to wait to see if it is everything they say it is). The rest of the enhancements, I would agree, are not ground breaking but considering where Pentax have come from, they are ok and their existing audience tend not to be out to be on trend. Personally, I think if your main interest is photographing eyes then eye autofocus is a key feature… for me, I do not, I am more landscape and wildlife, so it has the features I need, in a the formfactor I like and image quality I crave 😊. Others may make different choices and that is fine but please people, let us try and understand and respect the individual decision making process. If we are going to collectively contribute to the photographic pursuit, we need to recognise how we do this varies probably as much as there are photographers who strive towards this goal. For those who still want to rubbish the output of a particular camera brand over their preference and label those who do not agree with their choice as fools, consider this, the Camera market continues to shrink and disposable income continues to be a challenge and no camera brand is safe in such an environment. Pentax seem to have taken an interesting approach, yes, part of that is appealing to a niche audience but also, on the quiet, slimming down their offering to reduce costs. Remember, Pentax has had a rocky road in recent times and has survived, other companies are approaching this dilemma for the first time. Wide product ranges, rapid camera model turn arounds and expensive flagship cameras my not be the road to success in a continuingly shrinking market… we will see. My point is that rather than rant on about the camera choices people make and the features a camera should have, let us try to support the industry that makes what we do possible. There are no bad cameras being made out there by the key manufacturers, not really, even the Olympus E-MX1 is a good camera, it is just heavily overpriced 😊… you pays your money, you makes your choice as they say.
Embarrassing for an iconic camera brand like Pentax. It really hurts to see companies like Olympus, Pentax etc.go under.
Hey Joe, I wish the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III went with a 26 megapixel sensor. So far I wouldn’t by this camera. My eye is on a Canon R5 for stills; I’m not interested in video. But like I said in the beginning the only ZONK I see with the EOS 1DX mark III is sticking with a 20 megapixel FF sensor. I think 26 would’ve been thesweet spot for that camera.
Humm… First, lots of people forgets (or does not know) that a good photography has very few to do with the material used. But ultimately, why would you buy expensive mirrorless systems that you have to lug in a bag when you have a smartphone in your pocket? A 6.2 inches AMOLED screen is way much better than those rediculously small EVF. And there are so much more bells and whistles in these little screens. Nowadays AI embedded in our phones can mimic to the perfection what the best lenses can produce. And they can even save you the pain of post-production! Mirrorless tries to compete with smartphone (just look at the renewal rate of models to convince you). DSLR tries to reconnect the photograph to the roots and spirit of photography. Looking a final result on a screen (be it EVF or AMOLED) or looking to the light through a pentaprism are two different approaches… So, there are insane people ready to buy mirrorless cameras (and renew them like smartphone), and there are other insane people ready to buy Pentax DSLR once every 5 or 10 years. And both to make pictures they could have done 80% of the time with their smartphone… I really don’t know who the more insane are…
I just miss the mirror. My eyes feel so tired after watching the e-viewfinder too long time.
With a mirrorless camera you really ARE seeing what you are CAPTURING and with a DSLR you are not. Who cares what the actual scene looks like if that is not what you are actually capturing?… which you may well not be capturing, depending on the amount contrast in the scene. It is funny to me that it is claimed to be a benefit to see through the lens how the world really looks (which I can see without a camera)… when that is irrelevant if it not what your camera is actually going to capture. It is a big disadvantage. Show me what I am getting, not what I am not going to get.
I remember Pentax from when I was a small boy in the 70’s and it was considered one of the best cameras to have. I have never used a Pentax unfortunately, so I can’t comment on quality and my first camera in the early 80’s was a Canon (A1). Watching their video, they have marketed the camera with that whole retro vibe but forgot to mention some other good qualities of their yesteryear cameras. The boy and girl with their wooly hats, peak coats etc… Do you think that they’re aiming for people of a certain age with memories of the early Pentax cameras and hoping that they will buy into this camera? OVF, yeah, I agree, everything else… not really 😂.
I swear using single focus pt placed it center ONLY > SO Nov/Dec 2017 traded (2) K3ii. KP, K5 iis and 14 varoous K mount lenses cheap to real good but not longer than the 50-135 2.8. Which I had started to all get from June 2013 Toward moving to ‘mainsteam’ with Nikon and it’s more normal for most dslrs focus sytem. Missing small Pentax body and some features. Learned Pentax IBIS better OFF (to me). If I could have afforded to keep some Pentax, and still buy into Nikon I would have. No more. Toward end as I learned more, I get better with K 3ii and preferred it over KP. But not intending to ger FX K 1 I folded. And have more Nikon than Penxtax still with most refurb and used cost. What a hobby but not concerned when I pick up camera. (Commented to you a few month back and I can act like you would know..) no lens or body upgrade this year. A bit of stuff for home instead. Thanks.
Pentax is from a combination of pentaprism and Contax.
There is thousands of DSLR shooters on both canon and nikon that have never upgraded to mirrorless. There is some who prefer the optical view finder. Eventually Pentax will own this niche. I have mirrorless and starting to play with DSLR. There has been some going back to film, DSLR and even spinning vinyl records. It’s what you produce it’s not always the equipment. There are those leaving the me too camera systems. Seeking something unique. People get bored with today’s lenses and even adapt older lenses. It’s about being unique.
Some people just don’t have the imagination to understand what “beyond the measurements of numbers” mean.
I DO know what this is from the use of audio products, from the use of handbuild cars and motorcycles, by the use of quality sail boats etc.
I am also one of those who are very disappointed from testing mirrorless cameras vs. great dSLR cameras – even APS-C dSLR.
So what do I have to say about the Pentax K3iii?
Nothing.
I am wise enough to wait doing any review untilI have it in hand.
Trying to evaluate or review a product before it’s launched is hillarious.
My hopes about the camera in question brings up my hopes high.
Pentax has no chance to compete in mirrorless, so they breathe their last breath in DSLR.
About mirrorless cameras – the one objection I have is the EVF delay from the sensor. It shifts the timing ever so slightly.
They may have found the ultimate niche: current (maybe actively) developed DSLR. There are probably enough enthusiasts to support ONE company in that space. Me, I like my Sony’s.
Pentax is respectable but I think needs to step up to mirrorless or it will die.
