Maybe the specs aren’t quite 2021, but that doesn’t bother me at all. I want taking photographs to be fun, alloyed with a modicum of skill. I don’t want the camera to do it all for me. I feel some cameras, though boasting every feature known to mankind, suck the enjoyment out of the photographic process. I have used many brands of camera in my time: Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Olympus and Leica (I won’t touch Sony), but I have always had a Pentax or two.. or three along with a plethora of great lenses. One gets the feeling Pentaxes are designed by photographers by photographers. I never have to fight the camera like with some others. All cameras nowadays are capable of making stunning images, so one pays one’s money and makes one’s choice. I choose to buy the K-3 III because I’m pretty sure I will be getting a rugged, well made camera that will last me for years, with great IQ, ergonomics and fun factor.
The one thing we all know is that a camera in the hand is a very different experience than reading from a spec sheet. So many YT videos commentate without the product to hand. Those videos I’ve seen with people actually using a Pentax K3iii are all very positive. I have yet to emerge from a camera shop with the model I intended to buy so I might well head over to one now, fixated on a Fuji X-T4 and still come away with a K3iii.
Japanese culture is different and you have to take that into account. I don’t think they’re shooting for an American market as their primary…. it’s plainly obvious. I think they would find the kind of commercialism you’re describing offensive and beneath them… just my two cents.
I don’t think dslrs are dead… I’ve used plenty of mirrorless cameras and I’ve come to appreciate not having to use those electronic viewfinders. As a secondary point, it’s not healthy to have a radiating screen an inch away from your eye… and many people will find that out in a decade or two when they experience health problems caused by those, especially people who spend hours upon hours with that viewfinder next to their eye. It’s just not worth it to me.
Thanks for the long form discussion. I appreciate that you’re not succumbing to the pressure of creating content tailored to the 3.5 minute attention span… We should at some point discuss the pressure to shorten content as it relates to the length of the average pop song ;).
Just moved from Nikon Back to Pentax K-1
How many times did you say *”it is what it is”* to everything that was really not that good??
Personally, I’m not married to SLR – still full of electronics, so in case of an EMP, its still dead for good.
How about an update, get your hands on th K3 III (unless you’ve already done this and I didn’t see the post)
I was a Pentax shooter from the Pentax k1000 which I learned on…I then went on to the Pentax its D then the Pentax K-5 and K-7. I then took a hiatus from photography for awhile. I came back but started using the Fuji XT-1. I really liked it but I missed the Pentax. I am now back into the Pentax format and I just purchased the K-3 as I am a broke retired military man…and the K-3 I found at an estate sale with only like 5,000 shutter releases…and in perfect condition for $300. I am glad Pentax released the K-3iii but I can not afford it right now. I would have liked to seen the price for it around 1799.
I am going to buy Pentax shortly…my camera will have a tilt screen and incredible high ISO capture ability…The fail from my viewpoint in the K3iii is the lack of tilty screen (as a 72-year-old, I will not consider a camera without a tilt screen of some sort), and an out-of-my reach price of $2,500 CND…too high in mho. Cheers from British Columbia
come to find out, it has usable iso up to about 102,400 with pixel shift.
Pentax gonna be the next kodak.
It’s a great camera, but at its place, not as the only choice in the midrange. Ricoh has clearly departed from the ordinary consumer section of the market, and it does not seem very wise. This way, they just aim at a small niche. Having a niche is good, if it is part of your concept, not the whole of your concept. Ricoh, unlike Hoya, had a great opportunity to keep their concept of only excellent products under Ricoh brand, and a general concept under Pentax brand. Stripping all compact series and prosumer and premium compact, and concentration on a small, and very expensive part of the market is not the way to go.
Spends ages lambasting the specs for not being up to date, then says Pentax should have had some “hot chick” sell their camera. FFS. It’s not the 70s mate.
So far from those who have used the camera, they love it. Thanks for the video👍🏻
Great video ! Most of what you said is right. The camera offers a lot but to me, it’s more like “too little too late” ! I love Pentax products due to their compact size, and quality builds. My first Pentax was a K-5 II and boy, I was really impressed by how much more thought went into that camera than my Canon’s and Nikon’s. It really felt like a photographer’s camera.
When it came to features it just blew my Canon 5D away, but thank God it didn’t have the unnecessary list of never-used features that some Nikon cameras offer. After I got that camera I began buying Pentax lenses like there was no tomorrow, some old some new. The Limited lenses were just fantastic ! The pictures taken with these lenses were just in another league than with any of my Canon and Nikon lenses, plus they were all metal and very compact. More in league with the famous Leica lenses in my opinion. Not sure if it had to do with the lack of an AA Filter or not on my K5 II, but one thing for sure I didn’t have to do much in Post Processing as with my other cameras.
However the full-frame K1, is not so compact and given the size of the lenses made for it, it is much closer to Canon and Nikon in form factor. I skipped the K3 vs 1 and K3 vs 2 because I didn’t think there was enough improvements over my K5 II to Upgrade. Those 2 cameras never really reached the popularity of the K5 II, or the original K5 for that matter.
Now that my (2012) K5 II is getting a little long in the tooth, I was thinking about an upgrade, but to me an APC-C no matter how good is not worth $2000 considering the competition out there. I think that Pentax/Ricoh long gave up trying to compete with Canon and Nikon and rely heavily (maybe a little bit too much) on ‘Pentax aficionados’, their extremely loyal consumer fan base.
This is fine and dandy, but for Professional work sorry, but I still stick with Canon and Nikon. There are just too many holes in the Pentax work-flow for me to consider the company reliable and flexible enough for Professional work. For traveling, personal use, or just having fun they are hard to beat. I much rather sling my Pentax K5 over my shoulder when I leave the house than my boring Canon 6D, or Nikon D7200.
Maybe if the price comes down(by $500 or so) on the K3 III which will inevitably have to happen, I will bite, but as of now, I can get a K1 (full frame camera) for about the same price, or even the Fuji XT10 with a flip screen for half the price.. Another thing, I wish they had named it the K2 ! K3 III does not really flow out of your mouth very easily…
It’s difficult to understand a camera system without knowing or using it for real. It’s almost impossible to give a valuable assessment for a camera based on the specs alone without at least having it in your hands for a couple of days. Pentax as one of the smaller brands has a quite prolific digital range with their APS-C (K-3 series), Full-Frame (K-1) and even Medium-Format (645Z). Now they decided to stick to the DSLR which is good, they have basically already been a niche manufacturer, now they have got pretty much their own niche. Currently Pentax is a mix between modern and traditional technology which has a good balance and appeals to specialists users. In future Pentax will do the best they can and will stay as a brand for traditionalists.
Mirrorless competition is fierce and making some crazy innovations which were not possible before, even if not all of these features are truly relevant to the photographic process. I personally think it’s great to have a top quality DSLR in 2021 in contrast to the Mirrorless cameras (which are all very similar in handling). Pentax offers a different workflow, a traditional departure similar to the classic Leica M Rangefinder cameras. Interestingly Leica persistently refuses to die, they are popular despite being unbelievably expensive and the M cameras not even having autofocus. I think there is space on the marketplace for everyone: for the Mirrorless, for the DSLR and for the Rangefinder cameras. It’s great to have all these choices today.
This guy spoke about Steve Jobs and his superb way of introducing a new product and when we were watching the actual presentation video, my first thought was how much better a job, Steve Jobs would have done!
