Final shot was worth it
Sal, I experienced a similar situation just last week as a matter of fact. Just didn’t feel good going into the shoot. We’ll blame it on the LIGHT!!! 🤣
Sal, how much do you like the new Profoto trigger over the old model?
Yep. We’ve all done it for sure.
Very nice shot. Sounds like the kind of problems I have on a good day.
Stunning portrait!
Sal, I had a situation a couple years ago. Bright sunny day no clouds and I was working with only natural light. Unfortunately when looking on my viewfinder during the shoot I did not identify the problem, and discovered this when I got home. All but a couple shots were over exposed. Over exposed beyond recovery in post production. I had to to a reshoot, which I don’t mind doing but it’s not good for the client. I have improved my shooting in full sun but to this day I still try to avoid sunny days.
Thanks for the insight. Wonderful shot!
I’m usually not a commenter, but this spoke to my soul. Being self-trained, I feel like I’m always messing something up. Photographers where I live (Pittsburgh) just aren’t friendly to each other so I just end up trying to figure things out on my own, with no reference on whether what I’m doing is “correct”. I think it’s really responsibly for a lot of my imposter syndrome moments. Nice to know that even such established photographers can still not get it “right”
Your bad day is my typical day 😂
It’s so hard to set up a flash shot that doesn’t look like a flash shot. I’m getting better day by day. Once I saw how much detail you see on the subject and how little you have to correct in post, I became a flash lover. Love your work!
Had many similar scenerios, but the worst was probably a couple years ago when my brand new A1 got knocked over that was up on the lightstand and it fell and cracked the screen. It still worked thank goodness, but you can’t really see whats on the screen now. Fast forward to about a month ago I had to set up for some headshot sessions for new people in my workplace and that same A1 started screwin up and wouldn’t fire. It was driving me crazy! So now I am trying to troubleshoot and I can see that the A1 is on but since I cant read the screen I can’t really tell what the settings are, and I never change my channels or anything it’s been the same forever. I look at the other “non-broken” A1 screen and see what all the setting are and then I literally have to feel my way through this broken screen to see if it matches the one that is not broken and there it was…the remote trigger was set to off! Not sure how that even happened cause I didn’t change it but who knows…anyway long story short lol, my client is sitting there watching me diagnose this problem and I feel like a moron who doesn’t know how to use my gear that I’ve had for years. BUT the good news is that if played correctly you may feel like you’re losing at the time but really you are a superhero for fixing it and moving forward AND getting that damn shot!
Screwin’ up is so part of the learning process… — Try > Err > Adappt and Overcome! Keep growing… This was very transparent Sal ! 🙂
Just trying to be more constructive than negative here, but halfway through your video, It got more and more difficult to listen to what you were saying with that annoying, high pitched music in the background. Could not finish watching. Otherwise, I like what you do.
i have never known creativity to be easy – and it is often a challenge, or struggle. but i take that to mean i’m always learning, pushing myself to know more, and making ‘mistakes’ is part of the journey.
when I have an idea and don’t work, I move on and try it later. Did you try to photograph her in the backseat??? maybe flash outside and one inside. love your work!!!!!
First off, what a beautiful shot of Ellie! Sometimes the imagined shot is so grand in one’s head but can be much harder to get once you get started! But you persevered and finally nailed a great shot so I wouldn’t really call this a tragedy. I would want more in any shoot but I’d settle for one golden shot to go home with!
sometime (it happened) but you still talented
AHAHAHA this happens to all of us.. There was one shoot I had wanting to do a conceptual shoot and for some reason it never came out the way I was imagining…. the lighting everything was on point but that look was just “normal” … It just frustrated me…. but at the end.. I took a few safe shots to “show” I got something good…. but I was 1/2 disappointed..
Stunning shot! Ellie killed this as did you
