I wish that Ricoh could clarify this issue, since it is not clearly documented in the manuals. It’s really counterintuitive as jpeg image setting should have nothing to do with eye recognition, from a logical point of view. If there is a link, it should be clearly documented. I’d also like to see further testing with a tighter framing, where more focus points are available on the face, and maybe camera on tripod. In my (very unscientific) testing, there is an intrinsic inconsistency/unreliability/margin of error in eye detection, so that I have always been unable to discriminate that effect, from the effect of selecting picture style.

Hmmm, cust img auto…… V cool but I wish I’d known about that 30,000 actuations ago.
Never quite understood why all the other settings didn’t seem to influence results. But this one setting………Hahaha.

In the top line it says “raw dng”. Does that mean the eye AF did work with raw?

Quite unfortunately that AF points are lacking in the area where one would frame an eye.

Would be interested to see such improvements in AF with other subjects that it “recognises”. And are any of those subjects well suited to sports and action tracking in afc and 12fps bursts ? I think that is where I’ve struggled most to get the right combo of settings and looking forward the most to seeing the improvements of cust img auto.

But hey, I remember Ricoh official site talked about AI learning only works with 1) auto colour or 2) full auto focus, either one is ok right ?

Btw, zone full auto also got the AI working ?

Hopefully Pentax will fill those black checkers to auto focus squares in the next future camera, and not in the next 5th camera. On one of your final points, DSLR’s are all about focus and recompose for portraits. Mirrorless has a bizzillion auto focus points so there’s no need to fucus and then recompose. But I do think that there is something new in the K3iii that compensates for focus recompose using the inbuilt gyro and it adjusts the focus a tad to keep the focus in focus when you “focus and recompose”.

Poor Eddy, his beloved Fujifilm system released the XH2 and XT5 with the 40mp sensor and 50% + lenses are now obsolete. “It was a bad call Ripley, a bad call”! “Bad call, those lenses are dead Burke, don’t you have any idea what you’ve done here!

Some youtubers are testing their non-recommended and recommended lenses and versing them against 24mp, 26mp and 40mp, and they’re finding that even some of the recommended lenses don’t appear to be as sharp on the 40mp cameras as they are on 24mp and 26mp. But I believe its due to “Airy Disks” causing diffraction at all apertures. Yeah WOW! From 26 mp you need 14mp to get to 40mp which is a 35% increase, and more than half the Fuji lenses are falling apart.

I watched the Christopher Frosts Sigma 105mm f/1.4 review recently (Its 4 a year old review), and it works on the Canon 6D 20mp, and on the Sony A7Rii 42mp, and his apsc Sony A5100 24mp which translates into 57mp for full frame, without a problem bar the corners of A7Rii with a touch more CA in the corners (Probably due to the adapter not properly shimmed). And those pixel densities are well over 100% greater.

How is it that Fujifilm is making half its lenses and more OBSOLETE with Airy Disk failures already. Poor Eddy banking on Fujifilm, now he’ll have to pony up more dough for better lenses. Fujifilm is just a gimmick system. Glad I got rid of that garbage last year. What a relief. Man, I’d HATE to be a fuji owner right now facing the prospect of all my lenses being obsolete and their used price about to take a huge nose dive. Ah the Fujifilm hype. The writing was on the wall when the XH1 came out and Fuji didn’t Kaizen the firmware to make it the flagship. But now Fuji has 5 flagships that are all crippled in some way into “hybrids” and “semi-hybrids” and “mostly-photography-hybrid”.

I would have to describe my foray into Fujifilm as me being a “s**t head”, and “What a crap system”. I can’t imagine what Fuji users are experiencing now. I know my Fuji gear would be up on Market place and Gumtree and Ebay, before the dingle-berries that still haven’t caught on can buy it…………. and I’d hurry before the “Dingle-berries” catch on. Because Fuji used prices are gonna tank big time!

My commiserations to Fujifilm users who bought into the Fuji hype. RIP Fujifilm, I think you’ve shot yourself in the foot, and the bones are gone now, and you’ll have a permanent limp!

Now I can say FUJIFILM IS DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!

I seriously would have had NO idea that subject recognition was tied-in to colour profiles. In my head, they are simply preset colour gradings, and that’s it.

From your previous video on autofocus, zones and moving subjects tracking, I’ve slowly been experimenting a little more on autofocus modes.

The systems in our cameras have become so complex… The tiny manual covers everything with minimal detail / explanation.

So, a very big ‘THANK YOU’ for the awesome in-depth videos! I’ve referred to a couple of ‘em more than once.

I picked up the used K3-3 from B&H I waited until I found the camera at the price point I was willing to spend for the camera. The camera looks brand new it claimed minor scratches I can’t find any I had to do the firmware update as it was at 1.50 to 1.70 I have not used it as of yet maybe today. A lot more menu options

Happy New Year to you and yours. I have never looked into this custom image section of the menu. Isn’t this for jpegs rather than raaw? In your video on the xsmall setting in autofocus, wouldn’t that give you the accuracy you want on either eye?
