Back in the day when I shot film I had all Pentax cameras and lenses. A bold move by Pentax lets hope it’s the right thing to do. It would be a great shame too lose the Pentax name from photography.
I am a K-3 shooter for years and love it. The quality of the body and the features are in many ways superior to other brands. It is not build for video. It’s a pure and high quality camera for photographers. But I agree that the mark iii is quite expensive… Although we have to wait and see how the street price will be…
I agree, what an odd product for 2021.
Mirrorless and video centric is the future for these types of products. High end photography will be dominated by medium format by Fuji. Pentax is making a product at a price point that only appeals to Pentax fanboys.Pentax soon to go the way of Oly.
Personally the only things I agree with you is the price is high. I like a bit of weight in my camera don’t like the smaller mirrorless cameras that feel like toys. Pentax camera I have had are built like tanks and highly customisable and best weatherproofing. I don’t enjoy photography through electronic viewfinder I like to see the natural image. I already bought a k3 III as I have a huge number of Pentax lenses and the extra fps and much improved autofocus is worth it for me. As photography is a creative process different people use different tools there is no right or wrong. Personally I’d take a Pentax over any Fuji. Sony I have not used. I would have liked a flip screen but it’s no biggy .. if I want a low pic I can get low or connect to phone and see image that way. I’m counting down the days for my new Pentax to arrive 😁. Just wish it was a couple of hundred cheaper.. makes perfect sense for me.. for video never use.
It might be worth the price if it had the rear screen of the K1. Personally, I’d buy the K1 over the K3iii. K3 should be no more than $1299.
I have 5 Pentax cameras , Spotamatic SP11, * istDL, K100D , K70 and K3-11. Most of the YouTube videos I have seen on the new Pentax K3-3 have been landscapes all my Pentax DSLR camera will do landscapes. Pentax does not have a action lens other than the 55-300 PLM WR the Pentax 150-450 is twice the price of the Sigma 150-600. The lens is heavy on a already heavy camera body and a shorter focal length. It does not make since to release a action/ wildlife camera without a lens to take advantage of its increased upgrades . I see no reason to upgrade until I can purchase a lens that can utilize the upgrades as my current DSLR cameras work fine.
Do you think the world needs yet another identical camera to Sonicanikon? Pentax is better being a niche than just another mirrorless. There’s a lot of people that could care less about evf’s, video, etc., regardless of the year. This video is rather narrow minded. Pentax doesn’t need to move a million units and steal everyone else’s customers to survive. Not sure how you do t get that?
Agree with price and tilting screen only. Disappointing. Not sure I agree with the general claim it lacks features. I suspect it’s going to smash the APSC competition for stills but will wait for the real reviews. Can’t see the point in the price comparisons to second hand cameras that are only more affordable, because they’re second hand. I don’t think this camera is for everyone. But until full frame mirror less cameras the equivalent of the A7RIV can be bought new for the same money or less, this does offer a viable alternative. This is more for existing Pentax users, and anyone wanting an step up in the APSC DSLR world, with some mirror less features. Pentax have never been video centric, not what they are about. They were always touted as being some of the best stills cameras on the market, landscape focused, but with weak autofocus and lower shutter speeds. The latter two would appear to be resolved, so should now be a great all rounder ( landscape / sports / wildlife). That gives their existing (and new) user base more options than they have had before.
So you don’t shoot DLSR, let alone Pentax and did not had K3iii in your hand, but you are judging it?
Pentax? Are they even still in business? Sounds like they have lost their minds.
So let this People go Mirrorless, i will stay with DSLR. I love DSLR and Pentax is doing what i love. If i really want to go Video i get a Camcorder, but also Pentax can do great Video.
This video is wrong on so many levels. First you combine S10 which is budget camera to a flagship (!). Second, you combine FF camera to a APS-C (!). Mount something bigger to them as 70-200, 400 and you will see how bogus the weight and its overall distribution is on those sets. Could you compare battery life on S10 and on K3 III? I’m sure this would not fit to your narrative. I can imagine that I can make similar video myself bashing S10 and A7 R for the features that they do not include 🙂
A lot could be said why your video is not helpful but let me just pick one point: You do not seem to understand that EVFs are a showstopper for some photographers. Even with a 120Hz refresh rate, an EVF will still look artificial and get in the way in multiple ways. The K-3 III does not compete with cameras whose viewfinders are an impediment to composition and whose sensors produce striping and banding, or just general loss of resolution, because they need to implement AF on the sensor. Once you realise that choosing an OVF strategy is not born out of necessity (no development funds) but out of conviction and that there is a market subscribing to that conviction all of your arguments become moot. Not to mention that there are unique features of Pentax cameras that no other brand offers (on-demand Bayer-AA filter, astrotracer, very useful shooting modes (HyperProgram), green button, etc.).

I’m starting to think this guy isn’t a fan of the K3 mark 3.
I have 2 Pentax bodies (K3 – K5IIs) and 5 ltd. primes. The AF and MF on both cameras was woeful even 7 or 8 years ago. Everything else I quite enjoy on the K3. Ricoh has failed to support the Pentax brand into the mirrorless age and is now a small niche player for existing Pentax users only. I left Pentax a long time ago after I realized there is nothing much coming from them. Now they push a camera which looks almost like an anachronism in a shrinking camera market at a price that borders on brain damage. I really don’t know what they are smoking at Ricoh headquarters. There is a bunch of sentimentalists and hard core fan boys but they are not saving Pentax’s demise. I still use my ltd. primes on a compact Leica CL which work quite nice.
I think Pentax went into the wrong direction first with the K-7, and then moreso with the K-3. They had a chance after the K-5 came out because that was a very good camera that sold well. But the K-3 just added more functions. I mean sure, resolution also increased and it had AF tracking. But that tracking was a joke compared to Nikon’s D7100, and even in AF-S, it wasn’t nearly as confident in dim light. Now they finally may have an AF that’s as good as where Nikon was 5 years ago. I mean, taking a photo is basically getting exposure and focus right, at least from a technical point of view. Exposure is easily taken care of, focus is the other area. But instead of getting that up to par, they implemented a selectable AA filter, astrotracer, horizon correction, and pixel shift. Maybe some of these are nice-to-haves, but it’s not as central to taking a photo as autofocus. I think this camera will sell to Pentax users, and not many others.
This camera perfect for current pentax users. This will not attact new users to the brand. There is to many better options in this price range.
If you want to buy and have a new camera which has a mirror and a viewfinder(the best one on the market) in 2021 you have to get the PENTAX K3 III.
Is it a great camera? It seems to be way ahead of the previous K3 and K3II. It is a great camera that comes with a high price tag.
I will buy it in Oct.2021, my birthday and I am sure at about 1500euro then it is the best camera I can get for myself.
I love my K3 by the way. No surprise I am a PENTAX user by conviction.
No worries using other cameras or even a smart phone but using my K3 is a joy for me, always.
All the best,
Robin
