The K3-3 looks fantastic I have used the 55-300 on the K50, K70 and the K3-11 no surprise the K3-11 with more focus points gives me more keepers. I have my old Tamron 75-300 screw mount lens it does not get sharp until F-11 without Pentax shake reduction the lens would be ineffective.
Try to get some proper lens 🙂 like Sigma 100-300/4 EX APO DG.. that has plenty of resolution, constant F4, focuses fast… and these days those are around $700-800, which is fair price for such hi-performance lens.
I am impressed with the effort Pentax puts in to accommodate the use of old K mount lenses.
LOL! All my lenses are screw drive. It would be great to see how that K-3 III would work with an FA*600/4 or an F* 300/4.5 and event the FA* 80-200/2.8.
Sea Gull Rule #157 ” When in sight of a photographer, Hide!”
I really wonder this old Sigma 170-500 lens from the film era gives less of the CA/Purple fringe issues. Do you apply corrections with software? Thank you
Anyone that has ever done enlargements knows that a 2X enlargement on an 8X10 paper you will see some degraradtion, using a FF film era lens on a half frame APS-C is the equivalent to a 2X enlargement, That lens would render a sharper 8X10 enlargement on a FF sensor or film and the same amount of degradation on a 2X enlargement on an 8X10 paper. Compare a film era lens performance on a K-! vs on any APS-C and you will see some degradation. It is not that the lens is not sharp, it is that it was designed for a larger sensor. K-1 user would not have the same complaints about sharpness and CA as APS-C users with the same lans.
Love your impromptu chat Kobie – you do the most down to earth videos!
Nice comparison video Kobie. The K3 iii images are much better quality I’d say. Sounds like your really getting to grips with the new body now!
Then, give it to me your lens, ill going to make it sharper…
Im just peeping your wife in the lake.. lol
Apparently that lens in the newer DG version is pretty sharp and much improved. It has the Sigma wrinkle coat paint finish on it and is pretty rare and definitely overpriced. Its hard to tell based on the reviews on Pentax forums if it is sharper than other modern 3rd party long telephoto zooms. But it seems AF was working okay at least.
The Sigma 50-500 is the best Sigma for Pentax I think, or the 150-500 (second choice). But I don’t know if these old superzooms works with KP-K70 and K3 mark III. They are not updated at the firmware level for such recent Pentax bodies.
If u calibrate your lens you get sharper photos
I still have the K3 since Dec. 2013 and even back then the AF system was pretty crap. I got good results when I took my time and learned how to ‘read’ the focus ‘crackle’ properly in order to get a shot into focus, but after about a year later I got sick of this garbage and left Pentax for good. They never really addressed their woeful focus malaise. 7 years down the road they may have improved the AF but selling an APSC camera without a tilt screen for $2000? And where are the APSC lenses?
I know you are pushing in and holding the back focus button in continuous focus, but at the moment you are firing, are you still keeping the back button focus button pinned down, or letting it go for a second while firing, then pushing it back after?
I found the same with the Sigma 120-400 so I traded it. I have the DFA 150-450 now and that is a revelation.
Thanks for the comparison Kobie, I had a choice between the Sigma 170-500 APO and the Pentax DA* 50-135mm f2.8, I decided to go for the Pentax DA* 50-135mm f2.8, even though it does not have the reach of the 170-500, quality over quantity anytime.
