Did you ever hurt your fingers when you snap them at the beginning of a video ? 🙂
Very useful. I have only scratched the surface of this special function. What is the max number of modes possible?
I really like the way they designed the special function system. I think it is really well thought out and would be really efficient for wildlife photography. I think this and the external controls is something they definitely got right. Definitely makes me want to try this camera.
That’s funny. I was just thinking how cool your snapping is. When I click your vid I stop action at your snap. Then watch, save etc. So,I might have 5 frozen Kobie’s in tabs.
Thanks Kobie great video 😊
It looks like you are pressing S.Fn button before turning the “select wheel”. No need to do that. You only press S.Fn when selecting the function that the select wheel is supposed to do. And to select the function, AF, Grid, EV etc, you use the rear e-dial. When selected, you can just turn the “select wheel” and select between the different settings you have pre-selected.
Thank you so much.
May I ask a question, ? I use «AF hold » in a completely different way.
For me if AF hold is disabled, it is continusly checking focus, so it is useful if the subject is constantly moving.
Thanks for another great video, Kobie! Ricoh/Pentax should link to your YT channel in their manual!
You already made me discover the exposure mode ‘highlight spot metering’, which I am now using a lot (before, I would play with the exposure shift, or do an HDR).
For the benefit of anyone who reads the comments: It certainly makes sense to spend a minute thinking about the setting ‘User Settings Restoration’ (menu C1): this determines when the stored user settings are reset to the settings you saved into the user modes: when you shut off the camera, or when you turn the drive mode wheel, or both. On my K5 II s I almost never used the user modes, but now with the K3 mark III I hardly ever use one of the standard modes. I have affected several different scenarios to U1, U2 etc. This way I can setup the parameters for landscape (U1), movings subjects (U2) and the like, and within each mode quickly change settings with the smart function dial (e.g. HDR for landscape, crop for action).
With the aforementioned setting at type 1 (‘when camera is shut off’), whenever I switch it on, I will find the same settings: ISO, aperture, AF mode, exposure +/-. So, unlike as with the K5, I now never find myself starting to shoot with some funky settings I had used the last time, and forgotten about since then.
I use the User AF a lot, but I just don’t understand why just 3 choices, when other functions permit more.
The manual is the worst point of the K-3 III, practically useless. The chapter on recording video seems to be a joke. K10D manual had 239 pages, and for the gadzillion more features of K-3 III, only 148 pages.
Excellent tutorial!
Like Ralf said. Pentax should link you for training!
Great video and what a camera!
WOW. This is an amazing feature. Just a question: do you see it throught the OVF? (in order not to remove the eye from it and lose the subject).
Making my way through your massive tutorial library. I’m like others in learning to re-use AF hold. Very good info. You sometimes don’t even notice a tip of use that’s powerful. You’re that good. Just curious, what your Dream Pentax Lens you don’t own would be? Peace.
Do you have a dream Pentax lens? Green A* 135mm is one mentioned?
To John Hanover, who asked how many AF mode variations there are? Just read that today. We were talking about this: ” SAFOX 13 AF system with 101 focus points.
The number of focus points in the PENTAX K-3 Mark III have been increased to 101, from 27 in the PENTAX K-3 II. The AF area also has been greatly expanded. Of 41 user-selectable points,* 25 are cross-type sensors.
This high-density AF system enhances the flexibility of image composition, while optimizing focusing accuracy on the subject. Since its middle focus point is designed to detect an F2.8 luminance flux, the camera assures super-high-precision focusing when using a bright lens with an open aperture of F2.8 or larger.
*The number of selectable points may vary depending on the mounted lens.
I hope you will unpack some of this. I have some nice fast lenses. But not sure on the Lumiance thing. Thanks for your help,Bud.,
So,I got some of that. And I’m learning and tweaking with every Kobie vid. Man, those car show shots were incredible. I’ve shot many,Wow.
Interesting and very useful, many thanks.
