An interesting perspective:
IF you’re a new photographer and you’re looking to get into a DSLR system most likely to get new bodies in the future… Pentax actually… makes sense. Under those very specific conditions.
The chance of getting a new DSLR from the other brands like Nikon and Canon is getting really slim and Sony already said it’s not happening. Pentax just might be it and could end up surpassing the others. Maybe. Maaaaaybe.
I adore the attention to detail and design. But I just can’t imagine this when –
A D850 or R6 is $500 more.
An A7Riii or EOS 1DX is the same price.
A D750 or 5DS R is $500 less.
A Fuji XS-10 or A6400 is $1000 less!
Sacrifice a lens and get one of the first two, or put the extra $1k toward some amazing glass for the latter two.
In a vacuum this camera is cool, but it has some unbeatable competition.
Actually they do pretty great cameras, but man they do know how to kill their game too.
I mean 12fps burst and no CFExpress and actually only ONE UHS-II? What is this? Why do they sabotage themselves?
Buffer-Clearing that slow really kills the game for me…
At least pentax k3 iii win TIPA 2021 APSC expert Dslr 🤣
The Pentax question boils down to what size of bubble do you live in. If your bubble is small, relative to the average human, and you tend to only think of people like yourself who want the cutting edge of everything – the mountain bike with carbon everything and elite shocks and hydraulic disc brakes and top of the line shifters – whether you need those things on a bicycle or not, ok, move along. Yet, if your bubble is large and you don’t care that your 2lb SLR doesn’t also function as a state of the art video capturing device because astrotracer, multiple sensor based stabilization mechanisms and vastly superior weatherization open up waaaaaaaaaay more environmental options for you as a shooter, welcome to Pentax. Remember, Mozart didn’t have a Bösendorfer to play or compose on, that jump in The Great Escape wasn’t made on a KTM with 4” of suspension travel, Bruce Lee didn’t have a membership at PlanetFitness™, Eddie Van Halen blew our fking minds with a guitar made from a discarded body and a neck he found in a 2nds bin that he jokingly named ”The FrankenStrat”. You can take excellent captures, and be a top quality photographer, with a Pentax – and do so in environments that nearly all of the other brands fail to even address. This arms race to have the cutting edge of every technical aspect of a camera, to me, is beyond laughable and absurd because when you really get down to it – 99% of Fuji_non_con_film_etc, Canon, Nikon, etc users are living in such small bubbles that they don’t realize they aren’t really pressing the boundaries with any spec that’s 5% or even 10% over a Pentax’s at all, they got it but they don’t know how to or even want to exploit it. In fact, their worst fear, their LARGEST fear, is simply not having some ‘spec’ that doesn’t beat another photographer’s ‘spec’. Again, Mozart didn’t need a Bösendorfer and Bruce Lee didn’t need PlanetFitness™. Only halfwit procrastinating wanna-bes need that sht because, to them, it’s not really about the art at all, it’s about the ‘status’, some mental illness they have that comes from not having had pole position in some weird thing in grade school. In the end, a camera is just a tool unless you say otherwise and then YOU become the tool. Don’t be a tool.
seems counter intuitive to force noise reduction on the people that they are courting with the astro rotation feature…
Great camera, gerat review!
I have K3 and AF there really suck compared to other cameras of that age. But it have many great features and ergonomics.
My first camera that I bought was a Pentax H3, fully manual, no meter. Great camera. Tho I sold it decades ago I bought ode frm ebay for old times sake.
Great review. Very balanced and honest. Thank you
It sounded so quite good until I have seen the price tag. I mean, these guys at Pentax are crazy. You can buy decent full frame cameras plus a lens for that price. I mean, my a7M3 +Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is just much better in kinda every regard, for the same price as this APSC dinosaur.
..and the price is..? and; I would dearly love any new camera to have an instruction book that;
1. I dont need a microscope to read,
2.has the information about the illustrating photo on the same page.
3. made for the larger hands.
Looks good, So its advanced since the K-1000 then?
Pentax is a reminder that digital slr’s aren’t dead and neither are film slr’s.
Back when their top of the line APS-C camera cost about $1100, and they brought out their full-frame camera at twice he cost, it reminded me of what I read about the automotive industry.
In, “Decline & Fall American Automobile Industry’ by Yates, the author says that the cost to make a small car wasn’t that different that different than the cost to make a big car. They could charge more for a big car though, and that’s why they preferred to sell big cars. That made me think that must also be the same for anything, including cameras. So the same amount of work that it took to make an $1100 camera could be used to make a camera they could sell for twice the price.
I was disappointed that they took features out of their top of the line APS-C camera, the K3-II in order to make the K1 more special.
People say that Canon and Nikon still make and sell a lot of DSLR’s. However, both those brands have made it clear that their new Mirrorless cameras and new mounts are their future. Pentax not only continues the DSLR, and refuses to go mirrorless, but they keep the same mount that they’ve had since 1975. Kudos to Pentax!
The athleticism in the background was unbelievable!
The K-3 iii really seems like a great camera. Hopefully Pentax has made some good choices in sticking with dSLRs
I’m still shooting on a K20D and an *ist D that I’ve modded for IR shooting. I definitely need an upgrade.
I’m still tempted to go Nikon, But that means the 7 lenses I’ve spent a a decent amount of money on would need to be replaced with nikkor lenses.
if you want complicated menu try Olympus, have shot both and Pentax is way easier to navigate and set up.. It is a Photographers camera not a Videographers, Pentax always have been, its their core strength in my opinion.
As a hobby photographer i think that slr both digital and film made me to go out and shoot more. By some reason it was always fun to shoot. After switching to mirorless my gear is sitting somewhere and collects dust most of times. I don’t simply find enough reason to pick them instead of phone. Phone is even more fun to use. Gonna go back to dslr soon.
