cool brontosaurus
If it had the K-1’s tilting back screen, I could almost stomach the $2k price to have a new AF system to have a solid Pentax experience. But I’ll be waiting for a price drop before jumping.
I think Pentax is positioning itself as the ‘Leica’ of the DSLR shooting experience. In years to come, after other manufacturers have moved away from DSLRs to all mirrorless line ups, anyone wanting the OVF experience will go Pentax in the way that people seeking rangefinder experience go Leica. Nobody can argue that Leica is state of the art or the most efficient system, but it survives in an ever shrinking market. Pentax’s move could prove to be a wise one.
I think the most interesting thing on that new camera is the enhanced auto-focus system. As I shot (almost exclusively) only birds that was always a deficit in the Pentax bodies since I started photography (Chinon CP 5, Pentax Z50P, Pentax MZ-S, Pentax K10D, Pentax K3 and finally K-1).
I own this camera for about a week now and all I can say: It is an absolutely dream of an camera! I never ever had a camera with such an phenomenal haptic and in my hands! Its customisable to your very best liking and one feature that is very important to me: I have the absolute confidence to use this camera in even the harshest environments because its build like a tank and has a really effective and reliable all weather resistance (hear that…Sony?)!
highlight roll offs look very nice in the pentax vs fuji. Despite ‘baked in noise reduction’ detail fidelity looks more natural in the pentax.
tilt monitor??
the crop in 4K is a bummer, i would need a 8mm something fisheye to get what my 15mm gives me… on the other hand there is nothing worth using beyond 85mm in my collection so its hard to tell if its loss or gain.
Hilarious intro! (Said this Pentax user.)
Great review. I thought about switching platforms when I saw the price tag on the K3-iii, but I already own too much Pentax glass. A KP (when they were on sale!) was a no brainer.
Nice ponch.
The new camera which is already old :)))
PENTAXIANS!!!
Seems like a pretty solid cam!
Nice review guys! Shame they removed the internal GPS that my K-3 II has from the III.
Wondering if the AF could be further improved with firmware updates – although it seems like they reached a pretty high level now with this cam
You mention the menu. The one thing other camera owners have said to me how great the Pentax menus are. Agree no tilt screen not good in todays world but worth the up grade? I shoot with the old K3 and that will do me for sometime to come. Not worth the money I can get most of the new features just buy using Photoshop. We live in a world where people have to have the latest greatest to to keep the retail going. Learn to use what you have and save yourself a lot of money.
the menu is very different from my k-30’s
Can anyone check how bad autofocus fluttering/wobbling in movie mode ?
What I mean is shown in this video :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enpUb6bZ1QU
Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 Depth-from-Defocus (DFD) demonstration
Even newer Panasonic S5 is prone to autofocus fluttering/wobbling in movie mode.
Canon cameras with Dual Pixel Autofocus, e.g. Canon 6D Mark II, do not have such problems at all.
So, my question is autofocus of Pentax K-3 Mark III in movie mode is more like Panasonic S5 or Canon 6D Mark II ?
This could turn retro-cool at some point, when Gen-Z hipsters want to be strange and random.
