I love the sound of the red-winged blackbirds in the background of the intro.
Good work.
Thanks Kobie, that was very interesting. And though the bird shots are test photos, they are really lovely. I’m only just starting to take photos of birds. With mainly crows and seagulls here (not by the sea) – that’s entertaining too.
Nice Video again. Since it’s introduced by Firmware before, I like Satobi very much. So the question (also discussed in your thread in the forum) : do you really think, that the custom image is really “fully” enabling the subject recognition in comparison to the other more or less JPG changing profiles?
I know, it’s mentioned on the web information… but… hmm. That would be wired.
Greetings to Canada
Kobie, do you have to recalibrate the AF on each of your lens following a firmware update or does it retain previous settings?
I also noticed a bit better performance in the AF with the new firmware. Not sure about the accuracy, hard to test without doing a side by side comparison. But the AF seemed a bit faster and stickier when using my 300mm f4. I still don’t like how it acts with my 55mm 1.4 though. It pulses quite a bit. Never did that on my k-50.
Interesting that most users had to change the AF fine tuning after the update. I found my 300mm and 18-135 were still good but my 55mm had to go back to 0 instead of +2. Makes me think that the accuracy might be improved??
Kobie
Looks like you fixed the problem with the K3-3 autofocus problems
You were having
thanks for you great reviews and tips!
I’ll try my DFA 150-450 on a pelagic trip on Saturday.
Thank you Kobie for all your work. This helps me a lot in selecting my settings!
It’s great that Pentax are trying to address the AF issues with all these firmware updates, but I’m just sat here scratching my head thinking didn’t they have like 5 years of development time for the K3iii? In my opinion it should have been better on release considering they had that amount of time to refine it. Still it’s nice to see that they are releasing updates.
I think I wrote it on PF, but I think while accuracy and stickiness of AF-C were improved, the snappiness is kinda like lacking compared to before. I mean even with 55-300 PLM or 20-40 DC when wide open, when light is not perfect it tends to go to both extremes as if trying to be too accurate. In good light it is rarely a problem, but when light is less then perfect it starts to go a bit crazy. Still when it gets focus it gets is perfectly and sticks to the target. I got it on all my Ltd and PLM so I think all modern drive types.
Thank you for always giving us great info !!!!! 🙂
It doesn’t change the fact that the progress in the updates is ridiculous. I expected a lot more than “you get it and don’t whine”. So far for me, the potential of the camera has been wasted. Does Ricoh wait for it to become the only one on the SLR market (everyone is switching to mirrorless cameras) and say, well, we have the best SLRs in the world! What do you complain about, customers?
Expensive reflex, poorly reliable in terms of contrast management and with the usual unsuccessful autofocus, if I have to spend money on a pentax I buy a KP that from 640 ISO if you don’t take sports photos also behaves the same way in terms of digital noise production.
Nice video Kobie! it is nice to see new improvements on the K3III AF-C tracking. I have the KP and the K5IIs and when I´m shooting birds, when they look away or behind, the focussing is on the bird´s body, but when they look towards the camera, the focussing goes right to the face or eye. Something that you showed in your video with the K3III. I just shoot with AF-C and a single point for stationary birds and a wider range (center area) with flying birds. I feel like technique is the most important factor for nailing sharp photos.
Good video! I think the camera’s AF performance is more than sufficient for birding. I use AF-S on my K200D, but with a calibrated 50-200mm WR, I get many bird shots that are frameable. I can imagine using this an going all out in the field!
Sorry about the excitement, I am a relatively new Pentaxian and I am already enjoying what I am seeing with a 14-year-old camera. Cheers and thanks for the video.
Thanks Kobie. After upgrading to 1.41 I used my 70-210 HD DFA 1:4 . I am using AFS mode. I heard F16 up in the sky and on the first try at 210 ISO 400 F 5 1/4000 – super sharp image
I’m impressed with the AF speed
Yep, same ol’ story with Pentax Ricoh. You win some and lose too many. Not much has changed in the last 10years with the Pentax focus issues. Still use my K3 every now and then. Good camera once You ‘learn’ focus confirmation and keep it nice and slow. Would not go near Pentax these days. K1, maybe. I don’t see sharpness where You seem to see it.
Spending 2000€ to get a case whose sharpness of the photos is random, it is really not a success. I didn’t think there was such a thing.
