The B/W picture from under the bridge,i like that a lot 🙂
Both great cameras. I bought the A7R III due to size and the fact that the future is mirrorless. DSLR’s are old tech now and will be phased out.
Thanks for the review! You said you shot video all day in Puerto Rico with the Nikon and it was fine, but the Live View video autofocus “goes to crap” that’s been my issue with the Nikon too. How was the Nikon fine shooting video all day if the autofocus goes to crap? Were you pulling your focus or something?
BUhahahahah never argue with women they always want to win, that was hilarious when Chelsea says {i guess i don’t matter} LOL
And the winner is…her! 😉
I recently bought an entry level APS-C camera and I’m loving photography so much that I’m already thinking about upgrading. I think these one of these two will likely be what I upgrade to but it’s probably still at least 6 months away. However this video was fantastic for a look into both of these cameras so thank you so much for the information!
Chelsea is so salty about this
What abot the Dynamic Range?
I am biased towards Nikon anyways. Yes, brand loyalty should always be questioned. However, the Nikon 850 strikes me as a better camera, because it appears to have better handling and a good rugged body for outdoor photography, making the 850 a stronger contender. Plus, I take lots of sports shots, so it would be nice to have a camera with access to larger lenses like the 850 does.
Do you think the (Zed, because I’m Canadian) 6 and 7 will ever be as good as the higher end Sony mirrorless cameras? They appear to require a great deal of improvements from the various reviews I’ve seen of these cameras.
Move on Always Sony….trusted sensor
Instructive and fun, thanks to you both. I opted for D850 and of course keep second guessing myself as it feels as if the DSLR-mirrorless balance has shifted in the last 18 months or so, leaving the DSLR paradigm behind. However, I am sure I would be in the same state of mind if I had opted for A7RIII, or Z7 for that matter, as the D850 is such a reliable, fast, precise and well designed machine. Everything feels logical, intuitive and instantaneous, from powering on or waking from sleep to the ‘direct’ feel of a great OVF to autofocusing (AF-C with 3D tracking is an absolute blast in terms of speed and accuracy, and now includes a very effective face detection function for lively portrait sessions). I’d love a proper IBIS on the D850 successor (not sure if possible?) and a better LiveView experience. Nothing more. As the world has shifted, it might now be a case of Nikon not wanting to cannibalise the Z sales by further improving their F platform….Hopefully not. Interesting times.
Nikon
But this Foto 01:14 min is not really a good one O.o
Sony battery is better than Nikon lol check the company website if u don’t know Sony gives you arround 600 and Nikon gives 1800 shots on a single charge u still think Sony is better, and u guys call yourself photographers, taking money and making false videos,go find a fair job
Ive seen this earlier when i was deciding myself. Thought a followup might help others still deciding. Therecare good points here on both sides. I was coming from Olympus 4/3 E-3 so not married to either platform. I bought the Sony first mostly because i got tired of waiting for D850. Thought was so close in comparison i could easily make Sony work as well and it had some strong points. But i returned it. For a reason mostly i havent seen covered here. EVF lag. Sure the sony has a stated faster capture rate but i doesnt do much good if you cant see what you are shooting after the first few shots. Im surprised you both gave this primarily an ‘equal’ for sports? I dont do a lot of sports shooting but it was enough for me plus a few others discussed:
– Usability – should be key for any professional, Sony menu system is terrible IMHO
– Durability – it is very obvious in your hands it wont hold up. I have $300 cameras with better and more functional flap covers for connections. And to dismiss water in battery compart so offhandedly surprised me. This isnt a $500 camera. Buttons, functions, placements, use, sorry but a big miss in this price range for professional level priced camera. Not ready for prime time.
– option and lens availability and cost – covered well here and its a big deal, especially if new investor in platform. For 2500 i covered every lens i could need in quality glass except very long focal/fast. Unless you have endless supply of cash this one is key.
But, i will say this. I REALLY do miss in body stabilization. Sure you can get in glass on Nikon but its effectiveness really depends on each lens and not quite the same thing. 47mp really shows camera shake. You really need to up your technique there to compensate. 3x minimum reciprocal if you want to stay casual about it at least. This one almost made me second guess my decision.
– if i was videographer this would have been a much harder call for me personally. Sony more clearly wins there i think. But time lapse i agree is SWEET on Nikon. Never did that much before but so easy now i do much more.
D850 real working man/women strength and ergos. Sony, just not ready for primetime yet.
Sony is the future. Nikon had its time and now it’s just getting old.
You forgot which camera is best for low light and high ISO!
I pick the Pifco.
Damn. Good review. sub
both over 5,000 $ cameras… maybe if i sell a kidney 🙁
