Auto focus like a common man…
Nikon D850 always.. I don’t need Electronic view finder. Seriously
Dynamic range = Nikon
Video looks fantastic, razor thin DOF, nice blown out background, well played 🙂
I think a factor you are missing is weather sealing, I love my a7r3 on a dry day, but if it is raining I reach for my Canon. I think you touched on that with reliability, but for me it is not just for a 6 month backpacking adventure,
Changing Lenses, OK so maybe I am doing something wrong, but I can change lenses all day on my Canons with no problems as I guess the dirt all land son the mirror, if I change a lens in the field with the Sony, I know I have a lot of cleanup time in lightroom from the dust spots.
Simplicity I give to my Canon (I would think also the Nikon), the adapted lens is a blessing and a curse. MC-11 works great for some of my lenses, Metabones for others, but my Canon 70-200 II on my Metabones V needs advanced mode …. eff that. I just want the damn thing to work and not deal with those shenanigans.
Durability, again I think you sort of hit on this one. But my 5d Mark 3 can just live in my laptop bag, get bounced around, scraped a bit and works. Maybe in time the Sony will feel like a workmans hammer to me, but I baby it right now (I think it is sensitive). Maybe that is my fault, but the 5D feels like a kitchen appliance, Sony loaded with so many electronics seems more flimsy.
Media you didnt mention, the footprint of SD cards is great, but my sausage fingers and SDs don’t go well together, I have damaged a couple already. XQD seems more durable (have not used it), but on the downside you have two types of card to pack. Sony you just need SDs.
But I really love the Sony, looking forward to the Canon mirrorless so I can either go 100% Canon, or switch over to Sony.
The Sony AK 47, my favourite run and gun camera!

I’m sensing bias with Tony here
Timelapse on A7R3 really goes back to stone age!
I picked the Sony A7 III. Used to shoot with a Sony a6000 and Canon 7D.
I love the part where Chelsea is definding her “baby” (Nikon) I was totally ROFL! That was an “Italian moment” LOL ! …albeit toned down quite a bit. 😉
Sony FTW!! Woohoo!! I’ve wanted a A7R3 since they were introduced! I LOVE night photography!
Oh yes, a Canon to film this 🙂 At 9:03 or so you can see how fast and without any hunting AF does it’s job: it is undeniable dual pixel AF perfection. 😉
Can you guys plz review the new Tamron 28-75 f2.8?
I’d have given the win to Sony in the lenses department as well. Their lenses may be a little more expensive but they are high quality too, so it’s not like the premium is for nothing. Also, the adaptability is really good as you said and the IBIS will stabilize even the vintage lenses unlike the Nikon.
He lost me when he choose sony over nikon for battery life.
Two great cameras. For me the Nikon wins in the categories that mean the most to me. I’m sure I’m biased because I actually shoot the d850 and it’s absolutely amazing ! Love the video, next time let Chelsea hold the sharpie !!!
Damn you look so much more healthy on this 6Dii video footage.
You can make timelapses with the a7rIII. Put it on s&q mode and film with 1fps.
Only downside it’s not 4k.
I love the size & EVF in Sony mirrorless camera but the variation of lenses is limited, expensive, with smaller aperture. Most of their lenses are f4 and above. It is difficult to find third party affordable lenses & accessories unlike Nikon & Canon.
Loved this comparison and how Chelsea keeps Tony in line. I debated a long while before finally switching from Canon and picking up a Sony A7R3. But it was tough, I know the D850 is an amazing camera and I believe you’re accurate in saying it’s probably a more reliable camera in extreme conditions. Canon and Nikon have been building cameras like tanks for decades, I feel like shooting with my Sony I have to slow down and take my time handling it a little more carefully than my previous Canon bodies. As for timelapse, I really wish Sony would have built in some functionality, however you can create amazing timelapses with it if you pick up an Alpine Labs “Spark”. It’s essentially an app controlled intervalometer for about $80, it can be controlled with Android or iOS and works incredibly well. I use it regularly for timelapse and storm/lightning photography in the deserts of Southern California. It’d still be better if it was all built into the Sony but it is a fairly cheap and great solution.
