Think Sony A7RIII has the edge. Besides feeling better and being a more robust camera, Sony wins.
Everybody has been raving so much about the Sony a7iii, but image quality doesn’t come close to the a7riii. I guess cause it’s more affordable more people are buying it and giving it such good reviews. But if you want the absolute best image quality the a7riii is the best out there right now.
Recently bought the Sony with M and R adapters for my Leica lens usage, too much invested in old glass to change and new Leicas Cameras are too much money too:-)
Mirrorles.= for girls, D850= for men..
Nice Review
This was a good and fair-minded video yet I think the Nikon is a tougher, more rugged option. Sony is clearly superior in some ways, though. Kudos for being fair minded.
Sponsored by Canon…
I just want an update to the D750 🙁
I’m a Sony guy since I started about a year ago so part of me is laughing that Sony is winning. At the same time I have a huge respect for Nikon , as well as many other brands. Great reviews, you guys are a wealth of educational information. Thank you as always!
I love how Nikon didn’t even use their own sensor in this case lol! Using a Sony sensor… Both are nice but in the end, I moved to Sony and it’s packing everything I want. Still miss a fair few features from Nikon though…
According to Chelsea i must have big meaty hands but I cannot get a good comfortable grip on an A7 but the D850 is superb. I am guessing that as Sony is so wedded to the statements about smaller bodies then they won’t ever make a camera for people with hands my size.
As far as witch on is better I think you called it right, 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, it boils down to witch one fits your need.
if the shot looks like $hit it’s not because one used a D850 or a A7RIII 😉
Don’t have either camera, but everything I’ve seen and read says these are possibly the two best general purpose cameras ever made. Quite surprised you didn’t make more of the Nikon’s (why do North Americans pronounce that ‘nigh-con?) tracking AF – which most reviews seem to rate as ‘uncanny’. But DSLRs do seem to be slipping into yesteryear technologically and the AF is good by any normal standards in the better mirrorless models, as are the VFs (and I’d agree about their advantages). Also good to see Sony and Olympus finally biting the bullet and like Panasonic did a long time ago, stuck a bigger battery in a bigger handgrip. USB charging aside it’s still a win for the Nikon – one battery charge just lasts forever and you can still drain a mirrorless in a day shooting heavy (or video).
Speaking of which I guess you like the Canon dual pixel for video AF, but it did still drift in and out a bit on the above.
Mainly stuck on Chelsea though, so not a complete fail.
The fact that the Sony was water compromised seems to be its Achilles Heal in regard to durability. Always enjoy your reviews. Jim
Thank you both for caring so much about what you do. I scour youtube for ways to learn about cameras and gear and you’re consistently the best I’ve found. Sony a7r3 is my camera and I really don’t know what prime lens to buy, if you have a top 3 of prime lenses. I just bought the 85 1.8 and am waiting for it to arrive. I mainly shoot portrait work and currently own both the 16-35 2.8 GM and the 24-70 2.8 GM (I live in Hawaii so I need that wider lens listed first). When I had the Canon 5d4 I owned the 35 1.4 L II and it was my dream lens. Is there anything comparable from Sony? I don’t want to use an adapter. I appreciate your work. Thank you both.
The biggest thing you are forgetting is the question of which system you currently own. These are not cheap cameras so few people are coming to them with no other accessories. Both are good so pick the one that fits all your other gear.
Would love to see you guys do a video model releases – when they are and are not needed. If you’re shooting an urban photos in a crowded market, seems like it would be impractical to get releases right? I once had 500px tell me I needed a release for a minimal beach photo I tried to post because it had one tiny human figure in it – completely indistinguishable. I appreciate your thoughts – thank you!
How it feels in the hand is I think the #1 thing I’m picky about. I never felt comfortable with the Sony body. I’m used to the d300s,d3 size and my hand never get tired. Also shooting winter sports, with gloves on, no issue with the Nikon ( D3s,D810… ).
After a year after intro and 850 is still a four month wait to get one. I can drive down to a local camera shop and get the A7iii today. If i was paying for it I would buy the 850.
First thing I noticed are those Peak Design anchors! 😂 but seriously, if the Nikon mirrorless comes out with (good) compatibility with my old lenses and comparable to the D850, I’ll definitely look at getting it.
