Interesting you said you both reach for the Sony for night photography…my photography business partner has the Sony & I have the 850. Whether shooting outdoor concerts at night or the Milkyway we both feel the Nikon has better detail & less noise.
Gmaster lens are expensive.
There is something about photography that fosters a tribe mentality. Members of the Nikon tribe love their equipment and turn their noses at offerings from other manufacturers. Same with Sony, Canon, Panasonic, etc. Investments in lenses in one tribe is an impediment to switching tribes. One would think professionals would be tribe switchers because it’s their livelihood. But this is not always true. Among the majors, Sony is leading the technology war; Nikon just wants to survive; and Canon is the leader in the long marketing tail strategy. I think the Sony tribe will gain members at the detriment of the other two. If the market keeps shrinking, one of the majors will be asked to leave. Underdiversified Nikon is the obvious candidate.
I have the 5dIV, d850 and a7r3. Color science of Canon is unmatchable. It produces soft images due to large sensor and pixel density but photography is not all about sharpness. Color accuracy is as much if not more important in my opinion. D850 is pretty sharp and a7rIII seems to fall in the middle. But for portraiture photography, the 5div seems to yield the best results and even landscape is quite awesome. Not to talk about the variety of lenses that Canon offers. Nothing can really compare. BTW Canon glasses can be used on Sony body. Canon is simply a keeper.
Terrific review. They are both fantastic cameras. It is great to hear from someone who has real world experience with the equipment.
I bought the Sony
The Nikon d850 is the best camera commercially available in the world. That is not a opinion, that is a fact! There is not a camera in the universe outside of the fuji GFX (medium format) that can produce a higher quality image than the d850. Lets end this pointless discussion now please.
Somehow I do not feel your assessment is objective about these two cameras. Nikon D850 is a CAMERA and the SONY Camera is a consumer product period. You can tabulate your findings in any fancy manner you like, but you missed out the importance of each attribute – e.g. Sony got a tick by you for night photography although Nikon night shots are outstanding – outstanding means you get the best results. Nikon is about photography, and SONY is about producing fancy products – there are obsolescence issues with the SONY cameras or any other Sony consumer goods – try sending a year old Sony product to repair. Btw – SONY is not rain proof and Nikon is – that is already tested by many other camera users. The Nikon’s Menu is much easier to handle than Sony’s.
Nice Video. You help other make a good knowledge
MMM you guys forget the poor Sony after service or should I say what service !!!
If you are gonna spend 5gs on a carmera…. this is your vid…
Nikon <3
Chelsea’s the best!
Was the winner chosen for the giveaway?
Did you overlook durability? Betting on the Nikon in that arena.
Like many of us, I enjoy quality gear, and like playing with “gadgets”. But in the end, as you and countless others have proven many times, it’s not the gear that makes the best photos. The discussions are fun, but to the artist, they can be insulting… and of course, not just in photography. As an example, I spent most of my life working as a musician, and it’s the same there, like asking the world’s greatest singer, “What kind of microphone do you use?”, or a great drummer, “What kind of sticks do you use?”, etc.. Pretty silly, actually, but understandable, especially for YouTube. If the shows were simply, “Here’s a photo I shot… What do you think?”, and since most people can’t tell the difference between a low-end or high-end camera/lens setup, there would be less interest. Most “fans” of any endeavor seem to be focused on the gear, rather than the study, effort, artistic sensibilities, and so on. Your channel is well-balanced between letting us know about the gear, and pointing out that it’s not the pivotal element. And… It’s fun to watch, and see the two of you and your guests interact. Have fun!
I moved back to Nikon, choosing the D850 over the Sony A7RIII. Better range of lenses, weather sealing, much more reliable. The Ibis kept causing issues and it needed a restart. The autofocus, no competition. The Nikon has a much better hit rate. I actually think the Nikon has slightly better IM. But the Sony GM was good. The D850 is much better at handling higher ISO’s. One big difference. You under expose on the Nikon and you can pull a lot back without too much noise. The Sony was way worse and added a lot of noise. But great video guys! But the main reason i move back is the menu system on the Sony. I’m sorry but it just suck! So many features missing too!
Can u do a comparison of the x1d and the gfx?
If you lost both which would you replace first?
I like the Nikon but would recommend the Sony. In 5 years or so when you go to replace this camera the Sony glass will still be usable on the next Sony camera, the Nikon you won’t know. In 5 years will Nikon only be making mirrorless, will the adaptor for the mirrorless be good enough?
