0:55 is that Jared Polin?
I found it very strange that you kept referering it to a7riii but no mention of the a7iii or a9. I thought a better intro to new people would be to compare it to its competitors latest rather than the a7riii. Just my opinion.
Right NOW Sony has become the number 1 seller of fullframe digital cameras in the world, Not Nikon, Not Canon. The A7RIII had more camera of the year awards for 2017 than the D850. And in the month of April the Sony A7III was the best selling camera in Japan, not the D850. The lousy video autofocus of the D850 ,and lack of EVF ,and lack of true silent shooting ,and lack of 93% focus coverage, and lack of IBIS, and lack of focus peaking would all be a dealbreaker for me. I do subscribe here, but for all the good work that Tony and Chelsea do, they always seem too busy to respond to comments of any nature . They just move on and let us debate it without any feedback. A safe way never to answer any opposing point of view, unless the topic is in their next video. I guess they have just gotten too big for that. A shame. Cheers
The Fuji GFX… Whole different level of image quality.
I know a few people who have the D850 and so far I’ve not heard a bad thing about it. People have compared it to the D5 which to me is a hard comparison. I know at least one person who has swapped their D5 for the lighter D850. Believe it or not i know of one Canon user who also moved to Nikon because of the 850. Thats something i never thought i would hear.
Thanks for this video. and the tip at 2:37 Had no idea of this.
Wait. Did you say $20? Glad I bought the book when I did…
Arrgh I thought this was going to be another comedy video but its a real review 😀
Some of the comments below touch on the general DSLR v Mirrorless debate. Aside from constant view and an electronic vuewfinder, Mirrorless would be smaller and lighter. I had expected full-frame to go to Leica M size lenses. These have sizes more directly related to focal length. A wide angle lens is almost a pancake. With (D)SLR the mirror is in the way so retrofocus lenses were invented and made a 35 or 20mm lens physically huge. As the angle of light incidence behind the lens is not so important with film, this did not drive to retrofocus lenses. But modern sensors do. We see lens design on full frame Mirrorless follow DSLR principles for this reason. This is to say, a full frame mirrorless camera from Nikon or Canon better support my DSLR glass. It also means the advantage of size and weight is lost. Now give me a D850 as an F2 modular camera that can lock the mirror up and replace the prism viewfinder by an electronic one and I’ll be in nostalgic heaven.
Doesn’t even shoot film.
i’ll buy one in 10 years when they’re 200usd on ebay 🙂
I have found out, turning off the phone’s Bluetooth will allow the WiFi from the Nikon work a lot better. Where it shines is the transfer speed.
This means for iPhone users, especially on iOS 10 and later. You have to go into Settings—> Bluetooth to switch it off.
This is one of your top best videos all time.
I have bought the Nikon d850, best camera ever.
The camera has been almost out for a year and you just released a review … a little to late
Now boys. if you are serious and if it matters to you, means you are making money and you can get both of them. or at least soon. i got the d850 and a sony rx100v. if the bigger more expensive brother of Sony could do better slow mo vids then rx100 i would gave got it. im sure people that realy care about differences betwen the 2 will get both. but ppl that get first dslr fullframe will only get 1 and it dosnt matter which as long as they dont have glass for none of them
the camera body is accesorie and get changed every now and then. the main gear is the glass that dictates what body you need. exclusing addapters
soso Nikon is fighting back .. Kai w, T&C … who is next 🙂
After doing a 50 shot focus stack in my new macro studio today, I have to say after owning one since the release date, I’m still loving the D850 to bits, especially the built in focus shift shooting and silent mode electronic shutter. HDMI out to a tethered 32″ 4K monitor (which is new to me) was amazeballs when framing and focusing. I use new Sigma Arts which weigh a ton (even on a D7200) and various auto focus Nikkors, but also 40 year old manual focus F mount lenses that still shine, like the 55mm f2.8 Micro Nikkor. It’s a great system and a really adaptable body, with peerless image quality at 64 ISO for FF. A few niggles, as one would expect…the battery life on mine is not as good as I would have expected, despite the upgraded battery model. Video auto focus is still a joke, but no biggy for me as I’m not a videographer. The D850 overall is a pleasure to own and use…for me. Your requirements may differ and if so, Panasonic, Sony, Fuji, Hasselblad, or whatever will be your choice. Choice is good, anger is not.
my first DSLR was a Nikon D80, and even though I switched to Canon and bought the 5Dlll, I was never as happy with Canon, and I would’ve loved to of switched back to Nikon, but I wanted to go mirrorless, smaller and lighter, EVF, IBIS, eye auto focus, so I switched to Sony and bought the A7r lll, but if Nikon came out with a really great mirrorless like a mirrorless D850 but with great autofocus for video, and great weather sealing and ergonomics and maybe even a cool look, I might be very tempted to get it, but Nikon is going to be in the same boat that Sony was in 5 years ago with Native mirrorless glass, but maybe they will release a native adapter that works great with there old glass while they are little by little making the new glass, I still wish Olympus would make a full frame Mirrorless, since it was the Olympus OMD em5 that first made me realize how great mirrorless was, and if they were smart they would try to make it E mount and have an instant glass collection, and maybe even Nikon could do the same, that would really be a kick in the ass to Canon, and if Samsung came back and also made a e mount full frame mirrorless, the full frame mirrorless market would be competitive as hell, just my fantasy, this was a good review, the D850 is an amazing camera, but as great as it is, it’s not the Sony A7r lll, finally I have a camera that I can do a pro photoshoot with, but also carry around with me when I go out with a small prime it feels as small as an apse camera, my 5Dlll I barely ever wanted to take outside for casual shooting, it was like carrying a brick, and for street photography, as soon as people see the big DSLR they get scared and turn away, and the D850 is even heavier, its a mirrorless world, and I think Nikon and Canon finally realize this, but are they to late, if Nikons full frame mirrorless isn’t great and compete really strong with the latest Sony, it could be a really bad time for Nikon, maybe even the end of a special camera company ( the Nikon D850 is the best DSLR ever made ) but it’s also maybe the last great DSLR ever made
I’m guessing the thumbs down votes are from Sony/Canon users.
We need more Sony FE lens reviews!
