I have studied Z cameras and DSLRs. Z Mount is very impressive, clearer and sharper. Z cameras – battery, nope one slot. nope.small body for my hands Nope. sigh.. I am getting D780 and still waiting due to COVID. If D780 size with buttons, two slots, great battery life with Z Mount using Z lens, mirrorless with EVF. Oh I go buy it quickly!
Oh wow. What a way of saying the camera is for people that can’t embrace change. Good grief. A camera is a camera. There are gear junkies and there’s millions that spend 1000s in f mount lenses and don’t feel like spending thousands more on a system that has a couple of years on it. Especially when what they are using, does the job just as good. In the end, the results is a photo from both systems.
Probably my next buy when my D610 kicks the dust, which has been a great camera so far. I was mirrorless for a while but got fed up paying big bucks for gear that couldn’t handle the environments I work in (hello Sony! Hello Panasonic!) so I’m into tanks these days. This looks to have a terrific set of features, usability, and tough to boot. And i think this will rock for astrophotography too
If I was Nikon, I would work more on this combination of dslr and mirrorless. But the truth is these manufacturers don’t care about you. To even clear out your vault to acquire a mirrorless cost fortunes. I tried to trade in my d750 with original 24-85mm 2.8 lens only to get an offer of about £580.
Another great video.
I am looking for photo and not filming movie. Which camra I should go for. Nikon d 780 or some other one. Please recommend me.
Nice camera, always Nikon, I love My Z7 but SDRL are too great, enjoy taking pictures!!! You are gorgeous!!
“It’s practically ancient, as far as digital cameras go” – Opens images in IG, weak! Also since when looking at low-res EVF is cooler? 😀
Until Nikon pulls their head out of their ass and introduces a f mount mirrorless. Us long term Nikon shooters aren’t interested is buy a whole new line of z mount lenses to shoot mirrorless camera natively.
you’ve sold me
at 4:14, no mention of “albeit in live view only”
I opted for the D780 (Used) over getting a used Z6 or Z7. I’ve owned a Z6 and loved it but I realized I just cant afford one. The Native lenses are just too much $$ for a hobbyist imho and even though the FTZ adapter works well it just seemed silly use it all the time. For that matter the D780 is too much $$ as well but I did justify the price as I wanted something that could do a good job with video and have a better live view experience for specially shooting. My 2 favorite cameras over the years have been the D500 and D750. The D500 for 3D tracking, auto-focus speed and accuracy. The D750 for its amazing images. There was just something about the images I got off the D750, for me they were amazing. I kept pushing forward with different cameras because that is indeed part of the fun for me. I love technical items and learning new things but I have also come to realize there is truth in finding something that works for me when it comes to taking the actual photos… Im waiting to get the 780 in hand so we will see…
Lens junkie here ! If my d750 clapped out, I’d probably just buy another one new or used. Stills shooter so. But I mean some of the best photo’s I’m still seeing are coming from older cameras like the D90, Cannon 5D mark 1, D700 etc. It’s those lenses especially the older ais and D for nikon and the equivalent for canon, for me at least just have more character. Some of my favourite photographers use an older body and 2 or 3 lenses period and they make the most sublime photo’s… it’s who’s behind it right !
Nice review… I have a number of F-mount lenses, and planning to acquire the D.780 soon. I went mirrorless to a non-Nikon system some time ago, and mirrorless is good for some things I continue to do, but am coming back to DSLR to make good use of my existing quality Nikon lenses.. I miss DSLR, and not being able to use my F-mount lenses to their full capability. I welcome the D.780 soon. Having said all that, 90% of good photography or videography is the camera operator, and not the camera itself.
I have been watching your reviews and feel like I can absolutely trust your evaluations. I shoot dogs. I currently have a d800 Nikon and am finding it to be more of a pain when I’m trying to catch focus as the dog is coming toward me. Can you recommend a high-end camera that would help me with the focussing ?? Id like to stick with Nikon. Thank you very much, Tom
I just got this camera today and it is exactly as you described. The only thing I think you didnt mention which will be a fairly big negative for some, is the lack of battery grip contacts. Also it has 8000 shutter speed which was really missing from the D750. Apart from the grip issue, this camera is pretty much perfect. The live view is spot on! And it works great with all my old AI and D lenses. Maybe some day I’ll switch to mirrorless, but only when they release an adaptor that will let me use my D lenses AF and also aperture contacts for full metering with my D and AI lenses. When I heard the Z6/Z7 didnt have aperture coupling and light meter for the legacy F-Mount lenses, that was a deal breaker for me. Also, any idea why they modelled the FTZ adaptor on am elephant’s foot? Looks so bulky and unwieldy and undoes any sort of weight/form factor gain over removing the mirror. I also love the D750 grip but didnt use it as much as I did live view (i do alot of landscape work). Really looking forward to bonding with the D780. After half a day shooting round the house, I can tell it will be a keeper! Thanks for the great review, you overall really nailed it.
Here’s the thing. . .You’re making good sense in your evaluation. But that’s not what many YouTube photo “experts” are really all about. They are out to capture a certain demographic. They are all about pandering to that group’s prejudices regarding anything that has any connection to the past. So a camera like this that allows for “older” lenses to actually be used is a camera to be ridiculed. And the photographer who wants to use those lenses on this camera is to be ridiculed as well. And finally, those lenses are also to be ridiculed because they ALL supposedly “suck”. Projecting that attitude attracts a certain age group and has them screaming “YES!!!” when they hear their camera lord and savior make such a statement. I really appreciate your common sense approach and your realistic assessment of this camera and the idea that someone might enjoy using it, even with some older lenses. I just wish people would stop with the gear obsession. I have never had someone look at one of my best photos and say that they would only really like it if I used a certain camera or lens to shoot it. They have never said “If you used an older camera and lens to shoot this then I’m not going to like it.” You’re so much smarter than many of the pandering “experts” on You Tube. Thanks for your more realistic approach. Your insight will not be appreciated by many of the gear-obsessed out there, but that’s life. . .Good advice is often ignored or ridiculed.
A vast amount of time is placed on celebrating the lens compatibility (across generations) and so very little time is given to really getting a solid understanding why this is a great (or not) camera to use. This video vaguely mentions the new features and upgrades of the product . So basically, this is not so much a “review” as a “who this is for”, “why it might be good for them or not”, and “how that person is going to feel about this camera”. Why not talk about the stats, and how YOU used the new features, and show some photos you took and how they are better than the “ancient D750” and show how the usage would compare to the mirrorless units or whatever. This is mostly a long vague ramble about lens compatibility and feelings. (Just one guy’s opinion. Sorry. Hope it helps future content.)
Was I the only one who felt she totally hated doing this review for this camera body because it didn’t really fit her agenda with the all new mirrorless technology that is out there?. There’s so much to appreciate in this new F mount hybrid, and with all due respect, this video did not nail it, sorry.
Great video! Sums up the D780 nicely I think. It does seem very much like a digital equivalent of the F6.
I shoot a D750 and love it. I also have a decent collection of old Nikkor glass and I enjoy shooting wide open and up close using zoomed in live-view to really nail focus; my favorite lens is an old 55mm f/1.2 that I had to convert to AI. When I started reading the specs of the D780 I was really excited; just like you, I realized that this was going to be the ultimate DSLR for a vintage lens junkie like me! I also do a lot of photography in low light with fire performers, so I was excited about the improved dynamic range over the D780.
But…then I got to the point in the specs where they dropped the vertical grip, and that killed the D780 for me. One of my few reliable paying gigs is regatta photography and for that task the vertical grip is kind of a big deal; I can’t worry about craning my arm for a vertical shot while I’m trying to keep my balance on a tiny chase boat. Plus…I’m really not a fan of losing features in order to upgrade, especially at such a high price point.
I may buy a D780 someday for personal use with my vintage collection after the price has come down *considerably*, but for my paying work it’s a no-go for me.
(Of course…Ideally I’d buy a Z6 instead after someone releases a fully functional F2Z adapter…but that maybe a pipe dream….)
