Mirrorless all the way. I love being able to preview my exposure, and you can’t use an optical viewfinder when shooting video.
There are mirrorless cameras ranging from Micro Four Thirds to full frame, so pick your sensor size. But a camera like this in 2020 would probably feel ancient to me.
I’m still waiting on DSLR to die so I can finally afford a d850😌
I wanted a DSLR as I thought it the only way to balance out the large, wonderful, 70-200mm 2.8 lens. Now that I’m more acquainted with the F-mount lens lineup, I’m glad to also see lightweight alternatives like the 300mm f/4 PF and the 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, both of which have about the same depth of field at max aperture, available. Naturally, Tamron comes out with a super compact 70-180 f/2.8 just after I’ve written off the a7 system as an option though… but I’m still having too much fun with my D610 to care. If GAS strikes again, the D780 is there to cure me. Thanks for the review!
D750 is ancient?what about my D700?are we talking Moses here?every camera serves it’s role…enough with the gear junkies that can’t even expose a proper scene
The price of the D780 is ridiculous for what it is, especially compared to the D750 and the D850.
I plan to purchase the D780 to take advantage of my legacy gear. Then I plan on acquiring the X-T4 in January of 2021 to round out my workflow. I am still shooting with a Finepix S3 Pro, so the D780 will be a game changer. And yes, I still use the Nikkormat Ftn 35mm film camera to keep me humble.
The D750 ancient !! no way when it comes to shooting photos – at the time of the arrival of the D750 the video shooting was NOTtop of the pops – everyone new that – but the photos are still awesome – the chip in D780 may be a bit improved wrt ISO but the dynamic range compare to the canon 5D mark ii and iii are just way better (I switched from these to th D750 since I do a lot of postproduction and here Canon sucked (banding etc.)). I acknowledge the video capabilities of D780 is a way better than D750 which is pretty useless (unless you are shooting stills).
Do the mirrorless cameras take the same lenses as the DSLRs?
Meanwhile, I still use my D90.
Nikon D3s and the Nikon D4s in 2020? Stil rocks
this lady doesnt know what working pros use
Who is this “We” you keep mentioning? Not you? So why the sarcastic demeanor? WHat’s wrong with having The ability to use other lenses? The Fx gives much broader visual viewing vs. the Dx. That’s a great plus. See, calling PhGrphs “lens Junkies” is so juvenile. The bottom line is, It’s the end result that counts, the Photograph! The problem I see is you are a shill “pushing” mirrorless. But The “industry” will always push people to the level of “consumer junkie” to the next different thing that does the same as the last thing claiming it to be the next better… This is just marketing hype. It’s like a pro Pool shooter or a pro guitarist They are good at what the do regardless of the Tool they use. The D-780 I have found works excellently. It’s always a matter of the quality of the optics, and Nikkor Lens are always at the top of the heap.
I love your reviews and I’d watch them even if you weren’t gorgeous! Loved my D810! Love the pair of D850’s I have! ( yeah, two. I hate changing lenses in the field! ) I’m not indifferent to the “beauty” of mirrorless, I keep a Sony A6300 in my briefcase “for just such an emergency”. But i do mostly legal work and my clients LOVE giant prints with stunning clarity! for my video work, silly me, I use video cameras! just saying….
Thank you for this review. This was exactly what I needed. I just realized that I am a “lensjunkie” and that’s why I am hesitating switching to mirrorless. I have been using a D750 for the past 4 years – which I love – and I also still own a few old AI lenses and F2 cameras. I am waiting for the price to come down, but I will eventually replace my D750 with the new D780. Good work, thank you!
I think for those of us who have yet to be sold by mirrorless I think Nikon a D750 with improved video/liveview is perfectly good (if it wasn’t for the price) but I do think they missed a trick by not adding somekind of EVF addon (simialr to what panasonic/olympus have offered in the past on their non-evf bodies but preferably with a pass through hotshoe so you can still use flash triggers) to give a true hybrid camera.
Amazing information. Yep..it’s for a lens fan like I am. Initial cost is not cheap so will wait until good second hand cameras are available.
I wanted this camera at first, but I can see that Nikon will not be too generous with updates. Which would be fine if the Z6 wouldn’t already have a better autofocus for video and the image quality’s would be much better, not the same as a d750… You can basically buy a Z6 and D750 for the price of a d780.
Whould you buy the D780 with the 24-120mm?
THANKYOU
I bought my d750 a year ago this month. So far I really like it. I’m one of the ones waiting for Nikon’s nutrients to mature before gluing the route. In fact, after seeing the specs on the Canon R5 I might even consider going back to Canon. I’m not ready for a replaced yet anyway. But I do have a question for you if you’ll give your opinion. If you were to use a monopod with a gimbal, do you think the focus tracking in live view would be a decent option for sports? Especially at night when you can see the LCD screen better. I’ve taken pictures at the high school football games on the sidelines or around the court during basketball season with my d750. The frame rate isn’t the best for fast action but the focus is decent most of the time. I was thinking the face tracking in live view would be adequate.
