Precisely what could kill Nikon. The conservatism of the brand and its clients…
You get it!!!! You understand me!!!! I have an old 50mm F1.2 that I can now shoot quickly and acurately and I’m having a ball and the minimal purple fringing wide open is gone in Lightroom with a click. My 105 F2 DC focuses on this camera (not on mirrorless). My 35-70mm 2.8D that I have used for many weddings and by some miracle get sharp photos without IBIS (I don”t know how I do this). Yes, I have a large collection of older AIS manual focus lenses with character (not clinical sharpness). I’ll be honest, I don’t care about the advantages of the closer flange distance for print up to 20×30. No one can zoom my prints to 100 times the size without smashing their nose on the print. Unlike the d750 (which I still own) this acquires focus very quickly and is very useful. You didn’t mention the 5d focus algorithm that allows faster focus than the 750. Love this camera.
As/if mirrorless continue to develop I can’t see the same future for dslr. They look set to become the vinyl of music world. Perfectly great cameras but not the same functionality as mirrorless. Would I go back to 35mm film cameras – only for nostalgia (and a bit of fun), for efficiency and best options – no ! Time will tell
🙂
What is your recommendation for a all-in-one lens? I have a Nikon D7000.
I love D780 very much. It is an absolutely perfect camera for a wedding photographer. EVF might work for some and that’s your business but it sure does not work for me 🙂
I thought long and hard, but I decided to go mirrorless and sold ALL my DSLR lenses and camera, for the Z6. I love it. One of my better life decisions I’m pleased to say. Regrets: None. Concerns: Lack of Z lenses right now, but the few they do have are simply superb.
With all the strife and death going on in the world today, thank you for bringing some fresh camera content to keep us sane.
To say that a camera like the D750 is “ancient” is an statement from a gear lover. All cameras are OK. What makes the difference is the person using it.
low tech here, but love the new stuff.
I was going to buy the D780, but I couldn’t afford it, it was to be my introduction to digital photography, the last SLR I owned was an N90. I’ve been trying to catch up ever since, while lamenting the pricey D780, I did some research and hunting, and bought a brand new Sony a7III with a brand new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens for nearly the same price as the D780 body, and man! am I a happy camper!
Try putting the 180MM f2.8. It’s “a different animal” on my 750 and 850. It’s enough reason by itself to stay in the AF-D capability sphere. Two quotes “Camera bodies come and go, Lenses are Forever.” “Your Glass, is mission critical.”
I think this is an excellent review. I think outside of the lens junkie, this camera is spot-on perfect for the hybrid video/wedding photographer that doesn’t want to switch to mirrorless and that digital EVF. There are still a lot of people who want the lesser megapixels (don’t need it for weddings) but prefer an optical viewfinder. It seems like you get the best of both worlds with this. I will probably stick with my D850/Z6 combination but I can definitely see the allure to this camera.
I have a big investment in D series Nikon lenses that I started accumulating in the 1980’s. I only have three lenses with focus motors. Of those three, I only like one. So migrating to a Z series body means using only one autofocus lens, or carrying an extra camera body. I’ll do it, eventually, for now the Nikon D780 is a tempting camera.
I do not agree on how you classify the D750… even with today’s standard, it still a very good camera to buy. I personally don’t care if a camera is mirrorless or not… it’s a tools and I can do my job with both of them.
Why would you choose this over the Z6?
That was a good description of me. The F-mount guy … 😀
I had a quiet disappointing experience buying the d780, maybe I will do a video about it. the quality is lowered much from past Nikon product standard.
4:30 I feel so called out by this part of the video 90% of what you described is me…
To date, I use D610 …. more than satisfied with everything ….. reliable, convenient …..
