Great video!! Yeah I still have a lot of the lenses you described, the 50 f1.4d, 35 f2, 24 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 afs, 80-200 f4, and boxes of others
switching from dslr to mirrorless is like a divorce! My wife (nikon system) and I had too many children (lens). Having a divorce is difficult after all those years 😉
Love this tutorial! I have the D750 and was thinking of upgrading to D850…but this sounds like a better alternative: Your thoughts?
I feel like I’m behind the curve of the mirrorless shift. I grew up shooting film, then DSLR, now mirrorless. It feels like I need to convert, but I definitely need to do more research because I’ve definitely invested a lot of money in DSLR lenses. Having to buy new lenses scares me.
One feature not mentioned in reviews is that, like the D850, has a feature for negative scanning right in the camera which is huge and fits what I need in a DSLR as I still shoot film.
Thanks for sharing… just watched video & love your comments…I still have & use my D500 so with the lenses I have I will stay with DSLRS for the time being…yes I may update to the D780 as sounds a great camera…I am not sold on mirrorless at the moment.. cheers 😀
Thanks Leigh, very informative as always but please, America. It’s “NICKon” not “NIGHkon”. In Japanese, “NIGHkon” would be romanised as Naikon. Thank you and good night.
P.s.: and that’s a yes to the three generations of 50mm lenses lol. I saved a lot of weekend part time job money to buy my first lens, a 50mm 1.4 AI in 1986. Yes, I’m old. Haha
Great review, I was 85% on buying one, love my d800 for weddings but they are showing their age now and the file size of the 780 is a good compromise . I have played with a mirrorless but not for e yet, maybe a couple of generations down the road!. Great review, thanks Leigh.
very smart review, the best out there!
I can take my D3 for a whole day out!! whatever weather!! and it will remain hardcore for the whole day!! and no worries about battery life and being killed 🙂 always remember to have a weather sealed lens if the weather is not too good
Excellent review. I couldn’t however help but think that most reviewers are supporting mirrorless cameras because that’s where the market is currently. I believe the D780 may be a harbinger of future camera standards, the hybrid which brings the best of both worlds
I went to a camera shop and tried my 135 f2 dc on the D780. I was blown away by the video AF on such an old lens. My D850 is completely useless in that regard.
What’s a Nyekon?
This camera is awesome I think the optical viewfinder is a lot easier on the eyes 👀
The z6’s battery is what’s keeping me away from it. 400 shots before the battery’s dead? No way. I’m getting this one soon
Leigh, your still BEAUTIFUL, Baby.
How good is it in high iso? I have a d800 and it’s good but at high iso (800 up) isn’t that great
So what would be the one major reason they kept the mirror in this one? Keeping the real viewfinder? I feel like they could have gotten away with removing the mirror and given it an OLED or LCD viewfinder.
I am very happy with the Nikon DSLRs which are my tools of trade. For leisure and pleasure, I have Leica film and digital range finders, old Rolexflex and Hasselblad medium format etc. By the way those old film cameras have proven to be great investment vehicles. Their price appreciates while all these new digital cameras, like your brand new car, depreciate immediately when you step out of the shop. I can see the pressure channels like this are facing to help saving the camera industry; no new gear no revenue, full stop. My D3s, D4s, D5 and D780 are definitely my trusted tools for what I am doing. Got the Df as a nice looking toy though. I am a photographer and not a youtuber hence the Z range including the new Z9 adds no additional value to my incoming stream. Before you want to start a debate, the type of professional photography I do does not require a silent shutter. For gear/toy collectors, perhaps they may consider buying Leica; much lower depreciation rate for digital and fast appreciation rate for film bodies.
i’ll stick to my F3 till this goes for less than 1500 😕
