Once again a really good review which is exceptionally helpful. Thanks Tony
Always love your content and, obviously, gave you a like… Same can’t be said for the recent batch of Nikon Cameras, brand which I happily abandoned about a year ago. Seems that Nikon is doing everything in its power to go out of business… A couple more misfires, like this thing, and they will be successful.
Good riddance Nikon, you had a few good decades in you… All things must come to an end.
Cheers.
yup .. getting my ass to mars
The D7500 has a focus motor, it is missing the AI index ring.
That is for the old manual lense with only manual f/stop controll.
Yup I use my iPhone for 4k instead of my d500
Tony you’re also wrong about the af motor. The d7500 has one, but it doesn’t have an ai indexing coupling ring to properly meter ai lenses.
I want to buy a Canon 80D, but will waiting for the Nikon d7500 be a better bet?
Not the Mars t-shirt again Tony 😉
get your ass to mars!
Recently bought the D750 ( like it a lot). The 7200 wouldn’t have changed my decision. Was seriously considering APSC and finally settled on the 750 due to features and full frame combination. I still think the Fuji XT-2 is a killer camera and it was my #2 but the lenses just weren’t robust enough.
Yo Tony am the only one using a Nikon D5200? lol
So is the Video AF as horrible as the GH5?
I can see how the 2.2X crop factor for 4K video would be a drawback for most videography but for shooting a wildlife video of a distant subject, say an Osprey on its nest wouldn’t this be a plus? 500mm lens would 1100mm fov 4k video right?

The real issue with the 7500 is that it is not a replacement for the 7200/7000 series of cameras. I would argue that the D7200 was more trying to compete with the 70/80D from Canon, in the aprox $1K advanced amateur or professional backup camera. I would actually recommend the D7100, as the 7200 is the same camera with more plastic to facilitate the wifi, the idea is that it is a weather sealed professional crop sensor camera wither moderate AF, and high enough MP and pixel pitch to make it decent to do portraits in a pinch. While I know the 70/80D had some unique features like tilting screen and better video, it was at least a similar type of camera. The D500 and 7D are more comparable, as they are both high frame rate sports/action/wildlife cameras. As Nikon didn’t really have that in crop sensor, at least not since the D300, that camera made a ton of sense.
The D7500 is not a professional back up camera. It lacks the motor focus or the ability to use manual focus lenses. It does not have a second memory card. It is not able to use a battery grip. While it does have a better buffer and frame rate, I’m not sure who this camera is for. Oh, it also is not weather sealed. No metal at all. This is completely overpriced, especially when the D500 is selling for $1400 used, or $150 more. This is suicide from Nikon. No one will buy this camera and all the people that were waiting for the D7200 replacement that might not have need of the D500 are probably going to start looking at other camera makes because of this.
Love that shirt!
I feel like Nikon is losing the momentum. Instead of improving the D7200 and implementing new technology, they took some parts from D500 as well as they removed some parts from D7200, they put them in plastic body like D3xxx and D5xxx series and voila! They made a new camera! It is pretty same because they don’t listen to their customers as other brands do. How can this camera be compared with Samsung NX1? Nikon be careful, don’t become the Nokia and Blackberry of cameras.
Tony bro awaiting for sony a9 with 100-400 please update fast.
Not for nothing but pro video people, ie film or studio camera operator use manual focus ONLY. I don’t care much for peaking. Practice and you’ll get it, i find people don’t dedicate themselves and depend on the tools to do the work for them. That said, I am not a big fan of this camera.
12:30 You can add Ai-lencse indexing on the D7200 and D500.
