no reason for the d5700… I mean d7500. I don’t get paid but spending two years planning a trip definitely don’t want a card to die on me! I think they underestimated what people want they cut out the main reasons for upgrading from 5xxx.
So it films 4k, but not really? Just a marketing gimmick?
Buffer depth on d7200 is 18 raw, not 6. 6 was the d7100
Have the D5600 and used it over about 10 days recently. The snapbridge app worked amazingly well. I’m not sure why it worked so well with my D5600 and Apple iPhone 7+ but every pic transferred and quickly. This camera has 1 SD slot so I was pleased that the pics backed-up immediately and the GPS feature was also much appreciated.
I really want Nikon to do well and be very profitable. But these steps backwards, and this is not the first time, really hurt them.
The 7200 is such a great pro-am camera. A camera that a serious photographer wanting to go pro can use until they can afford the D500/D5. Just increase the buffer and and put in the tilting touchscreen. That’s it and people would be happy and buy. Lots.
Nikon at this point can’t afford to keep cutting features to eek out tiny profits. These cuts make potential buyers go elsewhere, so they aren’t getting any profit at all and they are driving new users to the competitors. I’ve been a Nikon user for years and am really considering going elsewhere. They are always late to every market, I remember waiting for their first digital offerings. I’m just tired of waiting, they have to realize their name is carrying less and less weight in the photograph and videography world. Do I go Sony? Do I really go off the reservation and try Olympus? I don’t know there are just so many amazing choices out there.
Tony, Thanks for producing this very detailed review. It just so happens that I am getting into the mode to finally upgrade to something newer than my old Nikon D70 but am confused with all of the different models available now. I’m even thinking that maybe I should start looking at the Cannon line but don’t know anything about cannon cameras. Which cannon cameras would compare to the Nikon cameras you’ve just reviewed? 4K video capability isn’t a big deal to me because I have a SONY FDR AX100 for recording 4K video. Any suggestions?
TL DW: buy the D7200. Or buy a Sony A6x00 instead
Where do I get that t-shirt though
tempted to buy the d7500 just for the tilting screen😂. I can never see over crowds – short people problems.
Don’t you mean 18×2.2=40mm? https://youtu.be/IHDL51Jg3kc?t=7m26s
sorry Tony, I think you got the buffer rate of the D7100 confused with the D7200. I never have any problems with buffer on my D7200.
Anyway….I am going to keep with my D7200 as it is a great camera. If I ever upgrade it will either be the D500 or I will go full frame and buy a D810.
Video quality is not important to me as I tend not to shot video.
This camera is absolutely nothing but a complete downgrade from the D7200. I don’t know what Nikon is smoking but they have lost their mind if they think they think they’re going to charge $1250 for a camera that no longer has a second SD card slot, no support for older Nikon AIS lenses (which the D7100 and D7200 did), no AF on button, and WTF, no support for a vertical grip. I am at a complete loss for words with Nikon. They screwed up big time. The crickets will be chirping when this camera comes out.
maybe it shows only 6 raw file buffer but im using mega fast sd cards and it keeps going with raw files for a long time before it slows down at least that 50 photos. only thing i would love to have is that tilt scree and i like my old lcd screen it reminds my very old pint and shoot camera that my dad give me when i was a kid some old kodak but i have had sucha blast shooting with it. In all i only would consider changing my d7200 for full frame model like d810, that’s why i don’t think d7500 is a replacement for d7200 more like a different segment camera
Tony, also no AI aperture ring as in the D7200. I have gorgeous old Nikon AI lenses. No focusing motor. So my 1.4d is useless. They seriously screwed up with this one. I’ll stick with D7200 for some time. Who ever came up with this model…..did a disservice to Nikon. All they had to do was to add better AF for video like you mentioned (to the D7200) and I would have been sold. Shame on Nikon for this one.
The D7200 had a bigger buffer than I said; sorry for the error. Though the specific number was wrong, we still ran into buffering problems on the D7200, and it’s better on the D7500.
Thanks Tony, nice review.
Having the option in DSLR to shoot video, does not mean we should use it!!
DSLR bad in AF for video, bad preamp for audio, not all had articulating screen and also no focus peaking!!
I use my Nikon D750 for Still and i am big fan and user of Camcorders for video.
For video, camcorders or mirrorless cameras, i don’t see DSLR as video camera.
For the Nikon D7500, nice features but they killed it for professionals by making it only 1 SD card !!! Why ?!
You forgot the plastic body without wheathersealing as a con!
I heard there is no AI tab which prevents the use of fx glass, which was the big advantage D3xx and the D5xx bodies. If this is true, why not migrate to Fujifilm if one only has a kit lens?
Thanks but I’ll stick with my d3400
