Are you filming this review using a Sony?
I don’t know that it’s fair to say they went backwards on battery power. I doubt it has a lower capacity battery; it’s more likely the same capacity but the Expeed 5 processor draws more power. Granted they probably should have upped the capacity to compensate for the higher draw.
I’m coming from a D7000 so this definitely offers some improvements. I rarely, if at all, use many of the features that are removed from the previous 7xxx series cameras. I don’t shoot for a living so don’t need the security of a 2nd slot backup. I don’t own any old AI lenses. Don’t use the back focus button. Don’t shoot video so don’t care about 4K (which it does have). Don’t care about the missing 4mp of the D7200; 20.9 is more than plenty for anything and is still 4mp more than my D7000.
I shoot mainly landscape and wildlife and some portraits and often in conditions requiring high ISO’s so the D7500 is def an improvement there.
I do however find it odd that it’s missing the finer lugs of the previous 7xxx cams, as well as the magnesium body parts but I’m sure both the cheesier looking lugs and monocoque body are plenty durable enough for enthusiast usage. In fact I don’t even use the lugs; I use only a ‘BlackRapids’ sling strap which is better than anything you could attach to lugs.
Ok I’m done 😉
As a user of an old D90 and a dominant left eye I have problems getting things to work for me. Every DX body except the D300s is just to small and have a bad grip for my hands. The D90 have better ergonomics than all the 7xxx series bodies. This latest “upgrade” makes me even more keen on saving up to the D500. Don’t get me started on the small FX bodies, same thing there.
Less battery time and a weaker AF system (similar to the old D300s). The only thing that’s great is the sensor and the faster f/s.
No you not wrong the D7500 is a meh.
Could it be that because of the brand new D500, with all the great features, the slight upgrade of the D7500 just doesn’t feel very exciting!!! If you look at most of the other upgrades, ie 3000-3100, 5300-5500, 800-810, etc, none are much different to the previous models. Just a thought:)
Good and clear video. Seems that a d7100 and/or a d500 is still the best option.
I have and love using my d7100 and can see no real reason to upgrade to either d7200 or d7500 and would only upgrade to a d500 but I am more than happy with my d7100
This is more of an upgrade to the D5600 than to the D7200. You would almost think that the person who named this camera was a bit dyslectic and switched the “5” and “7” in the name by mistake. Both the D500 and the D7200 would be better value for your money. Only one memory slot, is an absolute deal breaker for me. Memory cards fail often enough that you would not use this camera for something important such as a wedding. Giving it less battery life and at the same time not provide a battery grip was a really bad idea. So was the idea of not supporting AIS lenses, som of them are actually still in production today. I wouldn’t really call this camera similar to the D500. Yes it’s the same sensor but you are missing joysticks, thumb focus button, AF system and much more. Who in their right mind would buy this bummer camera at the current price point. I would have made sense at the same price level as the D5600 or slightly above but now it is just rediculous.
Are you serious? This is not even a Wirth successor to the 7200. It does not even have the AI meter coupling pin, therefore we cannot use any of our treasured old Nikkor Primes. It has only one card slot, less resolution, worse battery life. This camera seems more like a 5000 series than a 7000. Really can’t tolerate the loss of AI coupling. Argh.
I also shoot the D7100 and was looking forward to this “significant” upgrade but Nikon failed tremendously. They are indeed moving backwards not forward. So disappointed in Nikon. I am seriously considering switching to Sony.
ill just get the sony a6000 with kit for $500 and 50 1.8 for $190…nikon d7500 is an upgrade for d5600 not the d7200 hahaha
I dont want to head nothing else from Nikon about a camera. Until this company can produce a Mirrorless camera that can compete with the Sony ARii.
I have the D500 & love it. The D7500 for it’s price, which is taking a lot of flak, seems more like an upgrade from the D5500 range.
Currently shoot on a D5200 and have been eyeing an upgrade to the D7X00 line. But I shoot a decent amount of video also and have been waiting for 4K support to trickle down the Nikon line.
Honestly the thing that bums me out is the loss of metering on non-cpu Ai lenses because I have a few I use for video that I wouldn’t mind using for stills also. (and not having to do manual exposure)
The second card slot isn’t really a huge deal because I don’t have one now but it would have been nice.
Small loss in battery life I can live with. Loss of the second card slot when I want to use it for backup in the case a card may fail especially on things I can’t re-do, I can’t consider it an upgrade worthy body after the previous d7000 line. The moving screen is a nice touch as is potential touch screen features. Sensor upgrade is nice even at the loss of a few megapixels. Granted why is there no support for uhs-ii format in camera like in the D500? Could’ve at least gave of that in exchange for the extra slot?
Thanks Brittany, being a product manager for few years taught me a dear lesson in feature against cost so your words of value engineering are correct. What Nikon just did was cut off some of the pro related features (vertical grip, AI lens support, two SD card slots, back button focus etc.) and eliminate them from the flagship aps-c {pre D500 days} and that is why many people are quite crossed, the would be buyer profile for is usually a person who appreciates this set of features hence the big noise, I guess.
Everyone in the current D7000 line should just wait and see what Nikon does with the D500 successor. What we currently have gets the job done and what Nikon has given us here is Junk.
I’ll stick with my D7100. What Nikon should have done is take what people love about the D500 and GH5 and put all those features in a $1200-$1600 camera. Lets face it, NOBODY buys a GH5 for photography but imagine if we could have this camera with all the GH5 features on a bigger APSC sensor. At the VERY least they could have added built in image stabilization for those of us Sigma ART lens fans. And everyone shooting on APSC should have the 18-35 f1.8 by now. Surely Nikon is aware of this. Sorry Nikon. I love you but you came up extremely short. There is no reason for anyone in the 7000 series to upgrade to this. We are best off saving our money and just get the D500 directly and push our level properly than wasting money on what is obviously a half-ass attempt to get us loyal 7000 series fans to spend money again.
After Nikon announced huge loss, and major reductions, now would be the time to be innovative again and show the world the Nikon brand is still in the game but instead they get desperate and release something that makes no sense and targeted the 7000 line fans because we are most likely to spend money on upgrades.
Agree with you, not super excited about this new camera. It’s like Jared Polin said, the D7500 is the D500 lite.
Nikon is releasing new bodies left and right and I’m over here still shooting with the D7000. I really want to make the switch to full frame (D750) but seeing as it’s already 3 years old I’m waiting to see if they’ll come out with something new. If I decide to stay in the DX realm, I’m picking up the D500. I’m also considering switching to a mirrorless system like the Fujifilm X-T2
But I think it still very exciting to have the same sensor and low light sensitivity as D500 at 40% cheaper price.
I think Nikon should have introduced a new line up for this camera as it has a different target group for this camera.I wish it had a GPS in built..
Nikon just f’d up deir d7k series
_i_ u….
where is the hands on review??
