Hi SnapChick,
Thanx to my dad I’m an avid reflex-Nikon user. From Revue with Pentax-K to a Pentax with auto-winder, we made about 15.000-25.000 klicks of diapositives together, during, holidays, special events like skiing, motor- and F1-racing, mountain climbing, sightseeing of caves and waterfalls etc etc.
Digitally I started with the D50-kit, because I knew: you’re either a Canon or an Nikon-user.
The D50 was a toy and when the D80 came out, decided to buy it and got some other lenses. After 7-10 years I decided to get a D5100 because of the movie-possibility and I loved it; made in 2 years about 10.000 klicks easily until it broke during a fall in my holiday, last year; did’ t notice much at start, but later on…
Checking for a 7100 or 7200 with double card slot (yeah!) would be great, but then I read about the D7500 – “stronger, faster, better” (6-million dollar man)
A D500 is way too pricey, (although I have bought a lens that was close to a current 2nd hand price) I just went for a D7500 after looking some YouTube’s comparing the 7200 and the 7500 –
– Speed photography is a must, so 7500 it is!
– I had a D5100 so a standard screen instead of a tilting screen would be a downgrade for me
– The second slot? I haven’t had it before, why now? I say: use quality cards and swap them after about 10.000 to 15.000 or use them as back-up for your holiday pictures. And I always carry a second card in my pocket for emergencies…
– low battery? 1.000 klicks and the battery is half way after a week? Time enough to recharge or take a second/third battery with a longer life/more power.
Even wit my sigma 150-500 with 3x zoom between it, I made more than 150 klicks per battery (with my D80 it went out after 30 klicks)
I’m really satisfied with my choice of camera, the D7500 and I really hope it lives as long as my D80!
Took me long enough! I finally purchased my D7500 the other day. I now own a D300s, a D3100, and this one. Granted, I prefer the camera size of my D300s. It was definitely time to step up to something newer for me!! Great camera so far!
Nikon should Re-badge it to a D5700; not the D7500 period!
is the D7500 good for professional photography like portraits, landscapes, and also looks good ileven with the quality loss when posted in facebok?
No, the D500 is more superior! It’s just an updated Nikon D90, period!
now which camera best nikon d7500 vs z50
I have a Nikon D3200 now so a 7500 should be a good upgrade for me(I hope) looking at buying the 7500.
Hi, I’ve got a Nikon D7500 with kit 18-140 mm , and Sigma 18-35 mm f1.8…
I wanna upgrade to a mirrorless Nikon Z6 II or Z5 .
Which one you will suggest for me ?
Im amateur , I’m not a Pro …. I’m happy with my D7500 but want something with better image quality and autofocus , or D 7500 is good enough ?
I’m the other way around… I can see battery life, simply because buying an extra battery or two isn’t the end of the world. But I wish they would have left the second SD card slot in there. And OK, I guess the omission of a grip from Nikon for the D7500 is a bummer, but not necessarily a deal breaker (for me at least).
I wasn’t exited about the Nikon D7500 specs when it was announced in 2017. I already owned a D7200 and liked its still photography capability. Admittedly however, the D7200 video capabilities were not very good at all.
In the summer of 2019 I decided to rent a D7500 and spent an exciting weekend shooting photos and videos with both DSLRs.
My truncated observations were:
1. The D7500 video capability, while still not very good, clearly surpassed my D7200. Unlike my D7200, the D7500 video capture was actually usable in some limited situations, in addition to being more flexible than my D7200.
2. The bigger and more meaningful differences were in stills photography. For my purposes, both cameras offer great overall image quality.
3. I really appreciated having the available built-in flash of both these DSLRs.
4. I found the D7500 to have visually better high ISO performance.
5. The D7500 AF/AE system is much better than the D7200 AF/AE system, which was most evident using auto face detection, and while shooting a local baseball game using 3D CAF Tracking. Not only was the D7500 AF/AE faster and more reliable, but…
6. The faster frame rate and much larger buffer of the D7500 allowed me to capture a lot more keeper images. In point of fact, the D7200 simply seemed handicapped at the baseball game when compared to the D7500. Between the much better AF tracking, much bigger buffer, and 33% faster maximum frame rate, I was capturing action shots not even possible with my D7200.
7. So the respective camera specs sheets aside, the D7500 simply out-performed / out-classed my D7200 in every way that mattered to me.
8. I shot over 2,000 images on 1 single battery charge with the D7500 using the EN-EL15a battery, and 2,000+ images with the D7200 using an EN-EL15 battery. Most action shots were taken at 1/1000 second or faster shutter speeds, at 8 FPS (D7500) and 6 FPS (D7200), respectively. Some built-in fill flash was used, plus a few minutes of video was shot with each camera.
9. Although technical pluses, I never missed the D7200 second SD card slot and DOF Preview button, nor did I miss the small loss in megapixels. I never had a vertical control grip attachment for my D7200, so I didn’t miss that option either. Nor did I miss the lack of an AI Indexing tab on the D7500, as I own only CPU lenses – although I can’t understand why Nikon deleted this simple inexpensive feature. Truth be told, I’ve been shooting digital since my Nikon D70 in 2004, and I’ve never yet lost images or had an SD card fail. Lucky me. I never skimp when it comes to memory cards.
10. I did enjoy the tilting touch enabled LCD screen of the D7500.
11. The D7500 was (is) slightly smaller and lighter than the D7200 – in my hands the D7500 was more comfortable to hold, and thus use, due to its reshaped more ergonomic grip, IMHO.
12. I love the U1 and U2 custom user settings modes on both these cameras (wish there was a U3). IMHO they’re way better than the D300, D300s, D500 menu-driven custom user settings banks.
Would I rather the D7500 have two SD card slots? Yes.
Did I miss the other missing / deleted features from the D7200 which for me are seldom used or unused? No.
Did I find the D7500 to be a better, more capable machine than the D7200? For my needs, yes, markedly so.
In January 2020, I purchased a Nikon USA refurbished D7500 from B&H Photo for $599 (plus tax; free shipping) and sold my D7200 on eBay with PayPal for a net $532. Well over a year later, I’m still very happy that I did.
My two cents worth.
Hello there SnapChick. Well I would have to agree with Ken Wheeler AKA Angry Photographer. The 7500 is just a D5600 in a D7000 series disguise cause a top DX format camera it sure ain’t. Because Nikon not only remove the 1 card slot, but like you said they also change the battery giving us less battery life they went further with lowering the megapixel count & went from a Magnesium clad body to the cheaper built D3000 & 5000 plastic build body. Great Nikon ! why did you stop there you could have taken away the most expensive parts of the camera the view finder because most folk nowadays seems to used the back green to focus their shot. Another way to save money & maximize profit is to get rid of that fancy swivel screen to.
I think Nikon did a fine job with this high-end APS-C space (all those years ago now), having both a real pro D500 and a high-end enthusiast D7500. I upgraded from the D7000 to the D7500, skipping the D7200. Compared to the D7200, it has a faster shooting speed, better AF and tracking, much deeper buffer, and a flippy screen. And the grip is much deeper than on the D7200, which is a big deal for me.
If you need the super-hot (for that generation) AF and tracking and a second card slot (most hobbyists don’t), get the D500, plus you’ll get the pro ergonomics and other nice touches (like the OVF shutter for long exposures). Same if you never need or use the built-in flash common on consumer cameras (which are convenient for street or family photography but underpowered for many, many situations). I imagine that would most likely be the choice for someone like Leigh and Raymond (in 2017 anyway).
If you want a lighter body and a built-in flash (which can be used as a remote trigger for off-camera flashes), and don’t need or want all those pro features (PC port, AF joystick, lit-up buttons), even today the D7500 is a great choice. Some of the consumer features (build-in flash, can accept old IR shutter remote) will also reduce total system costs if you’re an ambitious hobbyist.
Unfortunately, Nikon removed the ability to do DoF preview on the D7500, a key drawback for (and something that still irritates me). It’s totally something that could be added in a firmware update but they choose not to. The other thing that I really don’t like are the D5x00-style linear lugs, which dig into my hands. Of course the D500 has both pro-style Nikon lugs (that get out of the way of your hands) and DoF preview.
I bought the D7500 in 2020 and it was the perfect choice for this hobbyist. I still haven’t made the jump to mirrorless or even full-frame, and I’m pretty happy with how things turned out. F-mount lenses are still great and are starting to get cheaper as the Z mount system expands (I saw that Nikkor 200-500 for $1000 new for Black Friday). Personally I think it’s a great time to be a DSLR hobbyist shooter.
Hello madam how are you doing today. Happy new year honey.
May I attend your photography classes?
