Thank you Michael…dropped my camera by the shop and my settings were reset and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to get back to the single-block focus square, which I use pretty much exclusively. Excited to get out and shoot my daughter’s soccer game in the sunshine here in 20 minutes 🙂

Once you start using the AF-ON (Back Button Focusing) mode (at 9:20) you’ll never want to go back, it becomes second nature and it makes the camera so much easier to use.

PS: I also like to put the AE-L (exposure lock) functionality on the front Pv button for easy access.

While I am not new to DSLR photography, it has not been easy for me to learn how to use my camera to full advantage and I find myself using the green AUTO setting more than I want to admit. After my old camera quit, I decided to get a 7500 mostly so I could continue to use my 18-200 lens and SB-600 flash. Being retired now and having more time, I decided to invest in one of the “7500 for Dummies” books and learn how to use all the features of my new camera but I found I was not getting anywhere fast with the book. I found Michael’s video on using the focusing system and knew I had to get his entire series on my camera. Thank you so much Michael. You have found a new student.

This is by FAR the BEST and CLEAREST explanation about how to set up a Nikon D7100 and D7200 for focussing. It needs more meta keys tags to make it easier to find this explanation – it took me hours and hours to find it. Well done Michael and thank you.

I’m a beginner photographer who just got into it via a new job..sort of an additional responsibility I offered to take on and learn. The office camera is a D7200 and this just helped me tremendously as focus has been an issue for me. Thanks for this video!!!

Nikon should just remove this god awful half press crap and just use a dedicated back focus button and keep it on AF-C. Then the only thing that needs to be adjusted is the focus square pattern which should stay on single 90% of the time for general use. This would remove so much confusion.
