I would go with the D5, shooting motor sports and concerts is route I want to go. But at this point shooting portraits with my D750 is getting me towards that point in life.(not saying I can’t or don’t shoot those things with my current set up)
I don’t think comparing specs is the right way to go with this… obviously the D850 has better specs but the D5 gives you the insurance factor in that it should be physically superior. The D850 might give you 400k shutter counts but the D5 might get to 800k and that matters to some.. but not all.
Don’t forget the D810 is a smart option too. Both of these are great but would only upgrade when my D810 breaks!
I would choose the D850 because I occasionally shoot behind the scenes stills on indie films. The silent shooting in live view would really come in handy when sound is rolling. My only silent option at the moment is a Nikon 1J3 & the low light performance is terrible.
I hope the D5S will be in the D5 mould plus all of the D850’s best bits (like WiFi etc) and big sensor with 24MP size option plus built in flash for very occasional use. Just make a body that does it all and finish Canon off. I’d pay 6k for that.
I had a similar quandary this past summer. Canon 1Dx Mark II or 5D Mark IV. (A photographer told me to spend my available money on good class first. Learn how to be a good photographer before you spend LOTS of money on fancy cameras. So I did that.) I am not a full-time professional photographer but I do sell mainly sports photos. I shoot a lot of sports and news/photo journalism type stuff. My choices were Canon 1Dx Mark II, 5D Mark IV or an earlier generation 5D. (I was doing this before the 6D mark ii came out.) I choose the 5D Mark IV mainly because of the wifi feature and the price. Just couldn’t justify additional cost of the 1Dx. Although, maybe someday, I will justify the move to 14 f/sec for state-of-art football and baseball photos. (So far MLB is not knocking down my door offer to buy that camera for me.)
A quick side note here. I have shot about 15 functions to-date using both cameras side by side. Can I point out a huge problem for me. Using both cameras simultaneously at a function and changing setting quickly as I move around the room sometimes from inside then outside again, flash-on and flash-off, long-lens and wide-lens on alternative cameras. I am constantly changing from manual to aperture priority. If you notice the positioning of these buttons are very dangerously placed. I have found myself changing the QUAL on the D850 as its in the same place as the MODE on the D5. Regarding the ISO on the D5 it is not just a number that sounds impressive, it really is far Superior over the D850 in low light. In the studio however the clarity on the D850 is the best I have had the privilege to use.
Easy, I’d get a D850 as it is the better all-rounder. I shoot many different types of photos and the D850 would do a great job with everything. I’m NOT convinced that the D5 is better built either. I don’t like the D5’s AA filter. I would even get the D850 if they were the same price. In my view the D850 is probably the best all-round camera in the world right now!
if I hate somebody, I will teach him Photography, and he will go broke!
I hope the D850 sensor really is made by TowerJazz so those douchebag BDS people can’t use Nikon any more 😉
A really good comparison, thanks! As a professional photographer, i like to work with the D5. The precision and reliability are great. Next to my D5, I work with a D800 too. But it will be a matter of time until it is replaced by a Nikon D850.
Hey Jared Is It Worth Upgrading To The D850 From The De810 ?
Just got the 850! Suped doper happy
lol why didn’t somebody tell you about your curl hanging awkwardly on your right side of your chin?
Easy, the Sony A7Riii
The D850 would be my choice. I don’t currently need a camera like that right now, but I might work myself into it. However, my reasoning is glass. You can have the best camera in the world, but if you got crappy glass you got crappy pics. The image quality is so affected by the glass you use that even a D750 would out perform a D5 with crappy glass. I currently am new to photography and I am doing my best to fast track my learning curve. But there is so much to learn and all the tips you give in your videos are a godsend. Thank you for your advice and great content. Keep up the good work.
I think I’ll hold out for the D6
A7III vs d850 POR FAVOR 😉
If I had to bash someones head in my choice wound be the D5 because it’s bigger and heavier and would do more damage. If I had to shoot an all day outdoor arts festival my choice would be the D850 because it’s lighter and has a native ISO of 64, my only wish is that they made the extra grip for the D850 using the same battery which are much much cheaper then the D5 battery not to mention having the need of the additional expensive charger for it. What do they think over there at Nikon, that I got money falling out of my A$$. Maybe if they hooked my up like they do for that couple from Connecticut that seems to know everything about photography and all the cameras ever made BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH, yeah I know the deal. You tell it like it is. That’s why I like you better Jared. Keep the videos coming. :~D
I prefer the Nikon D5. Never trusted a Nikon that is not Made in Japan.
For me the Nikon system is a system of tools I rely on in every situation. I can take all of my Nikons (several F2s, digital F5s, D3) to any place in the world without having to worry about failing. If I choose a SLR I want the most durable and flexible one for anything smaller I will take a Leica.
Nikon should put that D850 sensor in a D6.
