I have not upgraded my 2013 iMac 27inch purely because I’m waiting for a new 27” or hoping.
Hi Gary,
thank you for discussing this topic. I can 100% follow your arguments, but I think that you forgot to mention one aspect: the MacBooks.
I started with iMacs because I thought that this All-in-One concept is just awesome. But back then (that was in the early 2000s), I always a small MacBook to go with it.
In 2012 I made switch from iMac to MacBook for mobility/flexibility reasons plus an external (Apple or LG) display. That work just fine for me. And if I remember correctly, that was also the time when the Mac mini was at jeopardy and many people thought it dead.
2022/2023: I truly believe that the way we work has changed again. I personally do not see a relevant market for the 24“ iMac anymore. And to be honest: the colors do scare me. My guess is that the „home Mac“ will see a shift towards the MacBook Air/iPad/Mac mini plus display (and here displays with more than 27“ … I use a 34“ LG because I need the space) and for more professional use I see the lineup Mac mini/Mac Studio plus iPad plus external display (and, yes, I do think that Apple needs a larger Studio Displays than just the 27“).
And finally the truly professional use lineup with Mac Mini/Mac Studio/Mac Pro/MacBook pro/iPad pro, which -with the introduction of Apple silicon- had a dramatic price reduction, plus external display.
As for me, I found that do use my iPad pro much more often, than my MacBook pro. My next setup will therefore be iPad pro, Mac mini and 30“+ external display.
I will not even consider an iMac. And the reason for that is, as you clearly explained: I am more flexible with an external display. The Mac mini does not take up much space on the desk and is easy to hide and I can even attach it to the back of the display using 3rd party mounts.
Gary, thank you very much for the awesome work you do. I really love your videos and the way you explain things in a way that everybody can understand. And even though I have been using Apple products for quite some time, I always find new ways or ideas and learn from you!
Keep up the excellent work! 👍🏻
Great content Gary. Thank you. I was very disappointed when Apple got rid of the 27 inch iMac and I’m still pissed off about it to be frank. Exactly like you said there’s no way I am going down to the 24 inch. Although I really like the green one. I bought the Studio Display with vesa mount, (refurb), and I got the M1 studio for $1500 from Costco when the M2 came out. Base model. I have a NVME external hard drive 2 TB that I use as my main drive on the Studio. I am really loving it. I bought my late 2012 27 inch iMac in October 2012 and I’ve used it up till just last month. It served me well. (it still works fine, but stock I’m stopped at Catalina) I wanted to get another one or was hoping for a 30 inch but I didn’t wanna wait any longer.
And you’re very right Gary. I don’t know about everyone else, but this has been a really hot topic for me. I couldn’t believe it when Apple chopped the 27 inch iMac from its lineup. It’s pretty iconic in my opinion. And like I said in my previous comment, I was kind of pissed off about it. But yes, this is a very timely video and I’ve been looking for any information I can get watching, waiting, wondering. And if they come out with a 30 inch I’ll be pissed off again. Lol. Actually I’ll be happy like you said with the 27 inch 5K studio screen, which will serve me for years to come.
I got the 2020 27” iMac right before the switch to ASi (great timing 🫤) but I have to say I’ve really enjoyed it. The Core i7 is plenty fast for my current needs and I plan to upgrade the ram as time goes on to keep up with new OS and software demands.
When the last Intels get cut off, probably in the next few years, I’m actually thinking of going back to a laptop but with a bigger screen — the new 15” Air is a very attractive option. As much as I love the huge, crisp display, I have found that I miss the portability of a laptop just a little bit more than having the screen real estate.
32″ in dec M3
Love your Vids, I think M3 29″ or stay with M3 26″ Tim please can you do it as soon as possible my 21″ is almost dead 🥰🙏
I have a MacBook Pro 2021 16 inch. I initially felt bad about not being able to hook up to my 27 inch. However I found a workaround! On the older 27 inch I go into finder and then network and select screen share and viola everything that plays on my 16 inch MacBook displays on the 27″ screen
My iMac screen failed–it became my Time Machine. I sit far from the screen & like being able to reach the on/off button & cables on my nearby mac mini. Also, I occasionally fire up a pre-M2 mac-mini for software that couldn’t keep up & would have a hard time doing it with iMacs.
I have a 2017 27” 5k iMac with 2TB drive that I use every day and I still have a 2011 27” iMac but no longer use. I love my 27” so I’m not interested in going down in size, but if they ever go larger, I might consider upgrading.
It would be nice if the next iMac was a touch-screen and could be removed from it’s stand and used like a giant iPad. Or maybe the Apple Vision Pro will replace the iMac – and all Macs – at some point. Apple keeps us guessing.
Thank you for this video, Gary. 🙏
1. Yes, I want 27inch M3 iMac
Can you make a video tutorial showing how to add two to three displays with apple ecosystem?
I have a 27in iMac. love it. would like to get a newer version with Apple silicon.
I would love to ditch Windows and migrate to at least a 27″ iMac. Apple should focus on folks like me that want to migrate to their platform and make the change as easy as possible. Android to iPhone is really easy, tablet to iPad is really easy. Windows 10 to iPad pro is a challenge.
This was a good video because I have made the decision to get a new iMac and I have a 27” iMac and the studio and display together is so EXPENSIVE! And I do a good amount of video using Movies.
How about the old Thunder bolt monitors! Should be able to add more monitors to your computer and keep the apple look. Hate using other brand monitors. Or how about the new monitors, Keep adding them together and keep doubling(if two monitors and triple if three) the performance and storage every you hook another up.
I still have my 27 inch and it is amazing. Its a shame that its gone.
I really like my M1 Mac Mini and my non-Apple displays. Same displays as my first Mini and will be upgrading them to 32″ soon. Fixed income + creativity = Awesome Setup!
I had the mid 2011 27” and lived the heck out of it until the gpu failed. Sure do miss that thing.
Using 2017 27″ I7 iMac and M2 Mac Mini with cheap display from Walmart. You may have just sold me on a better display for the mini. How does LG compare with the Apple Studio display?
