I really enjoyed hearing your comments on this topic. 1st question) No, if Apple came out with a 27-inch iMac, I would not be buying one. But, this is because over the decades, I have owned several Apple All-in-One desktops all the way back to my first in 1997, a 5400 Power Mac. 2nd question) I agree with you the odds of a new larger 27-inch, 29-inch, or 30-inch iMac is about 30 percent. However, you can easy tell that the 27-inch “Studio Display” was a prototype for a 27-inch iMac. Why? Because it has all its needed elements (i.e. 5K 27-inch screen, built-in speakers, built-in mics, built-in web camera, processor chip, memory, and it can even receive software updates). (smile…smile)
i have a prehistoric imac in 2007 and it is a 24 inch love your channel i’m praying for a 27 imac for x-mas lol
Great video but I will continue to use my LG 27″ monitor with my MacBook Pro. I love Mac products but, refuse to pay those crazy prices for a Mac monitor.
I don’t know what a studio display is.
I had a 2011 27″ iMac that finally died in 2020. Not wanting to spend too much and watching the new Apple silicon coming around, I went with a MacBook Air as a “temporary” computer until an M1 or M2 iMac – hopefully 27″ – was offered. I’ve grown to love the portability so I’m now planning on upgrading to the MacBook Pro 16″ the next time there’s a sales tax holiday. Don’t think I’ll go back to a desktop of any sort.
Rumors are… 2024 ! Mark Gurman ! YES, I want a new 27″ iMac. I was looking thru Apple’s refurblished store a week ago and saw so many 24″ iMacs in it, there is NO way in HELL that I am buying a 24″ !!!! Still using my 2017 27″ Retina Intel iMac and just upgraded to 48 GB RAM., got a good deal. Ventura will be the last system on it as it won’t fit Sonoma specs. Maybe a M2 Mac Mini or Mac Studio upgrade in future. If current iMac lasts, then M3 something !
I certainly like the 27” iMac, if Apple came out with a 29” screen would tickle my interest for sure. I do like all-in-one display.
Thanks bunches
How many more years will Apple support a 2020 iMac with 5k display?
There was a persistent rumor that the 27″ Studio Display was originally designed as an iMac Pro, but the project was scrapped, so they released it as a standalone display to match nicely with the (then upcoming) Mac Studio. Could explain the inclusion of camera, speakers and a dedicated SoC on a monitor, unlike the XDR.
I wanted to buy a new 27 inch iMac….but no…they discontinued…..crazy….I’m still waiting…..so I fixed my old one……dunno what Apple will do….but I’m first in line if they do
I am a mid 2013 iMac 27″ hold out. I will not buy another mac unless it is an all in one iMac 27″ or greater
I was a long-time Mac laptop user until the iPad Pro became good enough to be an effective portable computer, at which time I bought a base model 27” iMac for my main computer. Next to my beloved PowerMac G4, it’s hands down my all-time favorite Apple computer. It’s a 2017 model, which will get left behind with Sonoma, so it’s time for me to think about my next desktop. This video is perfectly timed and very helpful, thank you Gary!
(PS — if Apple came out with a new iMac in the same class, I’d absolutely buy it.)
I’ve used a 27″ iMac for more years than I can remember. I can’t imagine going to a smaller screen even if I could find one with the same screen resolution. Also, every iMac I’ve owned has been upgraded – RAM and internal hard drive. So I can’t imagine using a machine which won’t give me those options (let’s face it, Apple’s hard drive upgrades are insanely expensive). I’m hanging in there, hoping that wisdom will descend upon Apple and they’ll not abandon many of us who love the 27″ iMac format with the flexibility to upgrade the internal drive. Also, for what I do, I really don’t need more than a 27″ iMac!! Not holding my breath that Apple will pay attention to loyal customers …
I had a 2013 27″ iMac that I really liked but I could not upgrade the operating system beyond “Catalina.” I have used TurboTax to file my taxes for many years and the 2022 version of TurboTax would not run on Catalina. I decided to get a new Mac in time for tax season this year and ended up getting a Mac Mini with the M2 Pro chip and a Studio Display. If the Mac Studio had been available with the M2 chip I would probably have chosen that but I’m happy with what I have. At least now I can upgrade my computer without needing to buy a new display.
Hello Gary,
Since June 2017 I’ve been using the 27” iMac, now I would like to get a new one.
In Oct 2021 I bought my wife a 24” iMac which I use occasionally but still prefer my 5K display for photography.
I will patiently wait until Apple’s next iMac.
Cheers.
César.
I’ve had two different 27″ iMacs. The current one is 9 or 10 years old and I would replace it with the current 24″ iMac (which I do like) but at this point I’m holding out for a processor bump. Would I get another 27″? I’d give it a look, sure.
I just upgraded to a Mac mini pro m2 from a late 2016 27 inch iMac. I miss the 5k monitor but the 600 dollar monitor I bought is just fine for my Audio and Photography needs.. I will never go back to an IMac unless Apple makes the monitor available to use as a monitor.
Thanks Gary. Most people wishing for a new 27 inch Mac obviously don’t have a 24 inch M1 model as I do. I also thought it would be too small. I was wrong. The retina display clarity easily makes up for the size difference. I totally forget that it’s slightly smaller.
I would’ve bought a 27″ to replace my old 27″ iMac but couldn’t wait any longer. I considered the mini + studio display but it was just too limited at the time. When the Studio came out I considered it, but opted instead for a 14″ MacBook Pro M1 with the studio display. Not as elegant as the iMac but arguably a bit more versatile as I can take it and use it separately. The attraction of the iMac though was that it was a comparative bargain when I first bought one. For about the same price as a high quality monitor you were getting the whole PC. Looking at now, the Studio display is excellent, but a full HDR would be nice. I really couldn’t bring myself to go for the LG despite it being much cheaper. The wobbly plastic stand aesthetic didn’t cut it.
Using both of them for work means that I can depreciate them against my taxes too, so no real incentive to cut corners.
