I’m just getting the M2 Air with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage for coding. I can get a external drive for cheaper and add onto the 256GB lol

Photo editing of large images. My Sony camera RAW files are over 100 Mb. Start doing edits in LR and PS and soon they can get up to 300 or 400 Mb. The extra 8 Gb of memory is the thing here. It will be the difference between getting memory low warnings and not. I’m not a pro photographer so I can’t justify a MacBook Pro or Mac Studio with 32 Gb of RAM so for the timbering this is a good as it gets.
Mark: I enjoy your video’s and find them quite helpful. As a father of three college-age children, I find myself managing a fleet of iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads, iMac’s and MacBook Air’s. One thing jumps out at me as an iPad and iMac user: 25% increase in in screen brightness. These eyes will benefit from 500 nits across the board! Keep up the great work.
Hi Mark. I still own and work with an original pre-M chip, sleek wedge shaped MacBook Air and it works perfectly. I don’t feel the need to upgrade at all. These new MacBook Airs must be spectacular if people are updating , considering my original is (in my point of view) the best laptop ever made.
FOR ME. PERIOD! eheheh
all I needed from the M1 air is the 500 nits display and now is available.
The reason for the price difference is properly due to changes in the exchange rate between the Pund Sterling and the USD at the time of announcement. Years ago when I still worked at an Apple retailer in Denmark we discovered that new Apple Machines went up and down I price based on the exchange rate between the danish kroner and the USD. Was the Euro and thus the Kroner “Strong” compared to the USD a 1000 USD model became cheaper. Was it weak the new 1000 USD model became more expensive in Danish kroner. If you as a dane was so unfortunate that Apple announced a new Product when the dollar was strong you ended up having to buy that product at a price not very favourable to your wallet. In the roughly 15 years I work at different Apple retailers I only once experienced Apple repricing a current model due to the huge change in the exchange rate between the dollar and the Euro. Thus if you look at the exchange rate between the Pound and the USD at the announcement of the M1 and the M2 you will moste likely find the reason for the price increase in Pounds
I am thinking a low end MBA as an alternative to iPad Pro + keyboard.
Did you see Liam @ Knebworth?
I’m thinking about getting an M2 with the student discount but I feel like if I get 16gb ram and 512gb SSD then I’m better off paying a couple bucks more for a base pro. Anybody with an 8gb think it’s enough for them ?
Why they calculate dollar to pounds 1:1 it’s doesn’t make sense 200 usd it’s around 165 gbp so way in US you have to paid additional 200 dollars and in uk 200 pounds
I have had my Air for eons now. It still does everything I need it to do, but the battery life ain’t what is used to be. If I get to the point that I feel like spending another $1000+ on another computer, I have little doubt but that I would cough up the extra $200 for the bigger, better screen, mag plug and latest chip. Foolish though I may be, that’s what I would do.
This is why I adore your channel. You answer my questions.
I’ve debating on whether I should get one of these laptops. My situation is this: I have a YouTube channel and do video editing, usually 2 videos per month. For that, I have an M1 MacMini which does just fine. But I need something portable. I was trying to decide whether to go with an MBP 14, MBA-M2, MBA-M1, or even just an M2 iPad when it comes out. At the end of the video you mentioned 3 use cases and I think I fall squarely in that last camp, so I think I’ll go with the MBA-M2 (16GB/1TB).
Now, all bets are off if I can find an MBP 14 (16GB/1TB) refurb, but fat chance.
Thanks for the great content!
IMO, the new M2 MacBook Air is for me 😂 I have a 2017 MBA which obviously has inferior tech and very out of date. My battery life has also been compromised. I’m a casual user so I am looking forward to upgrading from the ’17 to this newly redesigned M2 MBA. Can you blame me? Plus, the midnight color is 🔥 & the 1080p camera is a major upside.
Of course I’m not pleased the price has increased by $200 🤦🏾♂️
I can’t decide if I should get the upgraded 16gb memory or not. Any feedback on that?
Danke!
The new MacBook Air is astoundingly poor value for money compared to the MacBook Pro 14. It’s easy to see that by speccing them up in a comparable fashion. MBA with 10-core GPU + 24 RAM + 512 SSD goes for £1949. Base MBP with 32 RAM is £2,299. For £350 one gets better display with larger real estate (due to the DPI difference), more RAM, more GPU cores, more CPU cores. For anyone buying for work, the MBA makes no sense. Which leaves us with the answer to the question “who is the MBA for”: it’s a vanity purchase.
The M2 macbook air is really badly priced, Why bother with a 16gb ram 512gb M2 Air with 30 percent more power for £1749 when you can have a macbook M1 pro with all the extra ports a mini LED 14″ display and 100 percent more power for just £150 extra ? Other than it being a bit thinner and lighter ? Its madness !
Therefore The only viable model is the base level 8gb ram 256gb version, which makes it only really good at basic productivity and leisure use. But Apple wants £200 extra for this ! and before anyone screams inflation consider the fact the M1 Macbook pro has had the M2 upgrade for free ! Obviously to try and shift the touch bar stock mountain, but it shows Apple doesn’t need to charge extra for what is essentially natural progression. Apple is now essentially charging people for the privilege of them updating their hardware. and making an even bigger mess of their product line.
I’m trying to decide if I want to get a m2 or m1 pro Max I have the money for it but I don’t really want to spend it arbitrarily I edit practically every day and also play game for long periods of time. My worries for the air is longevity
At that price not many to be honest.
Starting at €1529 where I live for an M2 air. Ridiculous when the old air was such great value.
Apple need to read the room
