To be honest within the last 10 years laptops have gotten so powerful/good and software has been made so efficient that upgrading every 5 years or even 10 years would be a waste of money for most people. These 10 year old laptops run so well and thanks to their upgradeability, buying one even today will be a good option for most people because you are getting something that is still premium and getting something that performs much better than a $300.00 laptop you can buy new from a store. I still use my mid 2012 13 inch MBP and still love it thanks to the upgrades I made. TBH I think I can squeeze out another 3 to 5 years outta this machine 🙂

Also your MBP might be loud because the CPU paste may need replacing. I dont know if you know anything about that but there are some helpful videos out there. Iv done it myself many times to multiple Macs and I can say its not too hard. Just gotta have confidence 🙂

If you have a late 2011 MBP you can go up to High Sierra like mine and with the DOSDude patcher you can go up to Catalina

Also that’s not a butterfly keyboard, those are scissor switches, butterfly switches were not added until 2016

I’m still using my 2011 MBA 13. All I’ve replaced was the battery and the thermal paste a year ago (didn’t need to but wanted to)

Also all version of photoshop are supported both in sierra and high sierra

I have this model MBP with 16GB RAM, 250GB SSD and turned my superdrive slot into another spot for another SSD. It stills works great for me as a developer then dishing out a couple thousand for a newer one.

My late 2011 MacBook Pro runs great! I do run Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign CC 2019 on it and it’s still doing well. Like you I switched out the HD for an SSD and upgraded to 8gb. I just wish the screen and battery were better. However, I just got the MacBook Pro 16 inch and having problems with it. It may go back to Apple when their stores reopen. Thanks!

This video is well-intentioned — but a huge major fail in not mentioning the historic and famous critical flaw with the discreet GPU failures related to bad bonding insufficient to meet high temperatures.

Don’t get me wrong.

A Late 2011 MBP 15-inch (manufactured May 2012; now on Sierra) is still my primary “desktop” here in March 2020 — running an external Dell monitor.

This unit I kept boxed — pristine and unused — until three and a half years ago.

What I have learned:

YOU MUST DO PROACTIVE AND CONSCIENTIOUS HEAT (REDUCTION) MANAGEMENT

1) Install a manual fan control utility.

– Watch the displayed CPU temperatures like a hawk — and rev up the fans to a corresponding level to keep the CPU temperatures as close to 50 Degrees Centigrade as possible.

– When watching YouTube, reduce the video resolution to 240 or 360 DPI max.

– Pain in the rear, but keep JavaScript turned OFF in browser unless absolutely needed such as to log into various sites.

2) Install free “Turbo Boost Switcher” to disable Turbo Boost 2.0 — this will reduce over-taxation of the CPU and keep temperatures cooler under heavier tasks.

IF YOU PERMIT THIS MACHINE TO EXPERIENCE CONTINUAL HIGH CPU TEMPERATURES WITHOUT REMEDIATION YOU WILL EVENTUALLY KILL THIS MACHINE DUE TO SEPARATION OF THE DISCRETE GPU CAUSED BY HIGH TEMPERATURES.

I do not have intensive computing needs — so this Late 2011 MacBook Pro as my desktop suits me perfectly for now.

I am only trying to shepherd, protect, and stretch this machine long enough until Apple releases a redesigned iMac [!]
