I bought one of these for 50€ with a 250GB SSD and 16GB RAM already installed. It was being sold for parts due to having a faulty keyboard/battery. Guess what, I swapped those out for new ones at the cost of ~60€, as they’re pretty easy to replace, and I now have a great laptop to carry around with me for daily tasks, some more heavy ones (works just fine with these specs) and at a great size/weight, for just about 120€. That’s what I call a steal.
I have the same one. Put an SSD in it and it HAULS ASS.
Hi Brandon, your 2011 MacBook Pro can actually run macOS High Sierra! Sierra is not the last update for it. 😉
I have a 16GB ram and 500gb ssd on this mac, and my thing is like shit now
macbook pro early 2011 is compatible with 10.13.6?
Still going strong! Early 2011 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. I did have to replace the graphics card twice but it looks like the second time was a charm! The only regret so far is not being able to upgrade my FCPX.
I have an early 2011 13 in. MacBook Pro with OS High Sierra 10 13 6. Have installed an SSD 1tb and 8gb of ram. Only problem is I can’t download iMovie, final cut pro or anything like that. I can’t even find Microsoft office in the App Store to download. Any suggestions.
I upgraded mine, had removed the optical drive and installed 2 ssd and upgraded the ram and i could say it works smooth
I upgraded mine with 16gb ram and an SSD running Catalina. Plays runescape great and with Nvidia GeForce Now, I can play games like Overwatch at maxed settings. Just need a cooling pad because it gets hot lol
I have a 2011 15-inch MacBook pro i7 2.4 processor with 16 GB and a 500 GB Evo SSD, a 2011 Mac mini server i7 2.0 with 16GB and two 500gb SSDs, a 2015 i5 8gb and 250gb SSD, a 2018 MacBook pro i7 16gb and 250 SSD for work, and an iPad 6th generation.
What I can say with all my experience is if you need something for basic tasks almost all of these will work with no problem whatsoever, and fast as long as you upgrade the SSD and RAM on the old machines.
In addition, if you look at the geekbench results for Mac you will notice that even older laptops are outperforming some newer laptops on multi-core tests because some of the newer laptops are outfitted with lesser but newer processors but suffer in graphics. To compensate a bit on the graphics on the older machines, I installed a new eGPU with a thunderbolt dock. This allows me to connect easily and quickly to each of these devices by simply connecting either a thunderbolt1/2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter or directly with a thunderbolt 3.
This leads me to the key factors to buy will depend on what you need to do. If you really want the USB C/ thunderbolt 3 as your singular cable, a fully supported operating system, something that doesn’t weigh a 1000 pounds, not hide your dinosaur of a laptop in your local coffee house, then definitely go for something like a 2016 and newer. However, if you don’t care about the weight as it’s just sitting on a desk, you also don’t care about the operating system being on the latest (unless you patch), and you just need something to open up a browser, do some document work, and maybe some light old gaming, then go with something like a 2011-2015.
Hey Brandon. I have the same MacBook Pro and I was wondering could I instal catalina after upgrading ssd and ram? Wil the app store work properly? Thanks 🙂
I want to buy this laptop for 230€ with upgraded 128gb ssd worth
My father gave me his late 2011 MacBook pro for college (major: CS). I upgraded it to an SSD from my home desktop (had multiple drives in there), went to 8GB ram, and patched it to Catalina. Catalina runs way faster than High Sierra ever could. Xcode support and zshell are a nice bonus. Coding iOS apps… Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
It can be done but its annoying. The only thing that’s unacceptable to me is the battery, it lasts like 3 hours max.
Mine is also still running fine (late 2011) 🙂 thank you for the video
Guys, I’m considering buying a used one like the one in the video, but i only need it for music production programs like FL studio ableton live and rekordbox. Is it good for that use or should i go with something else??
Mine is 2011 with i 7 2.66Ggz only 8gb ram with GeForce 330M 512Mb and running Catalina macOS (dosdude help) and its performing very well👍🤜🔥
Would it run photoshop fine to just edit pics
I use a 2011 MacBook Pro that was used for five hundred dollars which was a dang rip off and it gets viruses all the time and for like half a year it wouldn’t let me click on and tabs or anything and then now today it just let me open a chrome tab so I can get on YouTube and stuff; it lets me get on Minecraft too but to get on roblox I have to google it and it wont let me get on safari just a tab called chromium but I can still play roblox through that so…. One time it even got a virus from a game I downloaded off of the App Store which is weird because it’s not like the game is bugged or anything…?
The 2011 MacBook an still be updated to Mac OS high Sierra as I have a early 2011 and can run high Sierra as the last update of Mac OS it can get
I dont even have a 2000 Mackbook pro. All I have is no computer. Every day I hope that I will have one soon. Ha
