Getting therapy as an adult who is not in school is essentially impossible right now. even if you have a gun in your mouth when you call, the best you will get is admitted to a regular ER and maybe they admit you for a few days and then discharge you. you could maybe get committed to an in patient mental hospital. so its either literally no therapy at all, or mental hospital. every single therapist i’ve tried to see doesn’t have openings, and when i’ve finally seen one, they were beyond terrible. super burned out, and just telling me to meditate after pretending to listen to me for 30 minutes or so. it’s a complete joke. when i was a student, i got real therapy through the university from people who actually wanted to practice medicine. the only reason i stopped going there was because i graduated, and you can’t see them anymore.

can you imagine how painful it is to not be able to get any help after working up to actually calling? i even called my insurance company’s mental health hotline and i almost made the guy cry because his script concluded with “and if you are lucky, a therapist will have an opening.” i LOST it on the guy. i was shouting about “luck based health care” and i think i broke the dude. let me flip a coin, and heads i blow my brains out and tails i get some health care.

and better help is probably the worst of all. pretending to be real health care, but in reality its a biotech start up that skirts HIPPA laws. they collect information about you, and SELL IT. The “therapists” they have are burned out people who are trying to make a few extra bucks in between their real patients. they are even worse than the “in network” therapists your insurance will send you to. if you are extremely lucky, you might find a retired therapist who has decided to take a few random patients online. you are much better off buying cats until you are too busy taking care of your cats to realize how much you want to die

During my 8th grade graduation I sat in the back row. I was bored out of my mind but I realized the audience couldn’t really see my lap as I was in the back row on the stage, so I could just go on my phone the entire time and zone out. Unfortunately, there was no cell reception, and I only had one game downloaded on my iPhone: Big Chungus Rampage in Big Forest, which I only had gotten as a joke (this was in 2018). And that’s how I spent three hours of my life running away from Farmer as Big Chungus, freeing the poorly rendered farm animals along the way.
